Think this over. A woman is raped, then publicly shamed for it by her co-workers, one of whom allowed the rape to happen.

This is so incredibly sad and disappointing, on so many levels. I don't know who Mills is but I hope she is brought to justice too.

But, since someone posted it publically for the world to see and with the intent (that's a really important word here) to publically embarass her, that is bullying. Not only that, it was against the Code of Ethics (someone posted on one of these if you need to take a look).

In the wake of her death, some people are expressing outrage over sexist online comments about Mittendorff and other Fairfax County female firefighters.

"It was pretty raunchy. It was raunchy. It was offensive. It was disrespectful. It was ridiculing," said retired federal government worker and Fairfax County resident Jane McKinley. She saw the postings on the community forum Fairfax Underground while searching for more information about Mittendorff.

The postings appear to be from fellow firefighters, though they are anonymous.

"I was alarmed and wanted to let the public know that there was this blog out there that was defaming these female firefighters and medics, not only Nicole but others as well,"

Fire department officials tell WUSA9 that they are aware of the lurid and sexist postings on the forum and are looking into them. But McKinley says an investigation is needed to determine if the people posting the sexist comments are county employees. If they are, she said disciplinary action should be taken.

"There was a poster that kept insisting on revealing photos of Nicole. He kept asking over time," and another poster said he did have photos. McKinley said the level of detail about fire stations, lockers, contents of women's lockers and dates of fundraisers makes is seem like the posters are firefighters.

I think intent here is easy. Would a reasonable person beleive that this would cause her harm? You have to admit, that is an easy yes. These are professionals in charge of people's lives, not teenagers we are dealing with.
And she didn't have to see anything herself. Would a reasonable person say her reputation was damaged? Could a future employer see these posts and decide not to offer her a position?

If you're going to prove, beyond a reasonable doubt, that it lead to her supposed suicide, then yes, you have to prove that she directly knew about the posts.

Concern that Fairfax County firefighter found dead was a victim of bullying

This news comes on the heels of concerns that she was a victim of bullying.

Police found a suicide note in Mittendorff's car Thursday afternoon after discovering her body. The details of that suicide note remain unknown.

In the past several hours however, we have become aware of online message boards in which Mittendorff's name has been used in an extremely negative manner.

Some of the posts purported to have been written by members of the Fairfax County Fire Department, where she worked for three years.

We have been told the department is aware of this online activity, but today they focused solely on coping with this very recent tragedy.

Jeff Dill, the founder of the Firefighters Behavior Health Alliance, says many in the field suffer from strained marital and family relationships, and addition, but do not open up about serious problems.

Tom Jackman will likely be all over this. Kiss those jobs goodbye, boys!

I have always respected & admired fire & police.....until now. When I see this shit..all admiration and respect goes out the window in a hurry. My mind knows that all are not bad, but when you see what happened here, all anonymous, how do you know the good from the bad? All are tainted because of this crap. I'm a former career FF/medic with FCFRD. Fortunately some years ago I transferred to a major city department. It's been like night and day. Fairfax County thinks of themselves as an advanced department, but they're big only in size, and that's only relative to the rest of the DC area. In reality they're a remarkably mediocre department with senior officers who are very self-satisfied and happy with maintaining their mediocrity while cruising towards retirement by doing the minimum job that doesn't make any more work for themselves than necessary. But that's a lot of government bureaucracies, the bigger the more likely, and Fairfax County government is nothing if not a big bloated whale. To be fair, they take their cues from their civilian masters at Government Center, starting with the egregious County Board.

But what really dooms the Department to podunk status is what you've seen here on this website: the rank and file is some of the most unprofessional, immature, lazy, and selfish POS's I've ever had the displeasure of serving with. The vile mixture of arrogance, misogyny, hatred, insecurity, and general low intelligence displayed here by these "heroes of public service" wouldn't be out of place in a high school locker room. That's because that's the last stop these morally deformed and intellectually deficient sociopaths made before joining the fire service, so they could be "cool" for once in their miserable little lives.

There are some good, smart, talented, and conscientious people in the Department. But they're learned to stop trying and just put their head down and do their job because the culture is overwhelmingly against them and more importantly, they aren't backed up by leadership, who are are corrupt and involved in this as any first day probie. And why not? This is the culture they came up through, and they don't see anything wrong with it.

The citizens of Fairfax deserve better than the scum represented here. But rest assured, the County and the Chief will do nothing about this board or the culture that produced it, whining that there's nothing they can do, while talking solemnly about "investigating" and "taking it seriously" until the media attention blows over and they can continue the countdown to retirement. But the only good thing to come out of this will be that citizens will stop looking at the FCFRD as heroes and public servants, and start seeing them as they are: a bunch of shitsacks sucking on the public teat and committing low level crimes while posturing and preening. I admire the guys who pick up my trash a hell of a lot more as public servants than I do most of my former "brothers" in that jerkwater department. I'm disgusted with the majority of them, and yet again thankful that I got out long ago. The ones who have been posting here like gossipy little middle school girls are the ones who should rethink themselves, but of course, if someone's capable of the tiny minded shit that's all over these forums, then they're not capable of sudden self-reflection and becoming a decent human being.

Food, police officers, yes, normal patrol officers, are considered public figures. The fire dept is NOT a private organization. Fire fighters are first responders with signicantly similar duties with regard to interactions to the public. So, it is very likely that even your average fire fighter IS a public figure. It's part of the job.

Representatives of a public organization cannot post slanderous remarks as representatives of a government organization. It is a violation of gov policy. I don't if it is grounds for a court case or not but I do know that if/when these individuals are identified as FD employees it is most definitely grounds for being fired. And that is good enough for me! Need to weed out the bad apples.

Huh? I have always stated it is against gov policy. You may be confusing me with another poster talking about taking it to court. I am not familiar enough with the law aspect to talk to that. I am, however, familiar with government policy, and have seen people in my org get fired for slanderous/vulgar comments online.

So maybe using the word "slander" was a mistake on my part, but I hope the correction above clears up the confusion. As you can see, the posts made fit into all of these categories (abusive language, vulgar language, AND personal attacks." If the FD is serious about investigating this, it will be pretty easy to identify the posters and take appropriate actions, and well within the law to fire them.
