Gotta a tip for you fella, a lot of the folk on here are retirees from other county agencies and the school system itself. Pretty tidy sums if you ask me

How many days a year does a school teacher work? Is it really 9-9.5 months? Are we comparing it to the private sector? The benefits package through Fairfax and the school system is fantastic. I'm not certain we're comparing apples to apples. I can't say one way or another that school children are getting their money's worth. What do we expect?

I will not ask you what your name is, but I am curious to know what you do, and what your salary is. Also how much money do you think these individuals should be making? Lastly, why is it you dont work for the county if this is such a great gig?

How much is a good teacher worth? How much is it worth to retain experienced people? How much should someone with an advanced college degree earn in a high cost of living area? How far should people have to commute? Should there be a career ladder for teachers? How much is it worth for a child to have consistent staff in a school and to interact with that staff over the course of their childhood/teenagehood? How much is it worth for a student to find and hone a passion in music, dance, sports and a lot of the other classes you have mentioned? How many parents value these things for their children and support them? How much do we value our children in this country (and they do belong to all of us, even the ones from other countries who will become adults here)?

Please discuss these questions instead of just putting names and salaries up. If someone is not working, yes, they should be fired. Most teachers I know are working harder than you can imagine.

I work in public safety for Fairfax and work 56 hours a week for the fire department. I do not think I'm worth my $90K salary. I have a bachelor's degree but based on the expected skill level, I only need a GED. It's great money and I'm far from complaining. However, I know the salaries in the fire department are far too high. Evaluating our personnel, salaries and compensation packages is long overdue. I feel this is true for all departments.

I call bs. If not give us your name, then quit and save us 90,000. You are a loser punk with no past and no future.

Sure, not everyone is capable of teaching PE, but about 90% of the adult population could. I certainly wouldn't say the same about Math, English, Science, Foreign Language, etc.

Ex-teach - Earlier in this thread I posted that I thought 90k for a top notch, experienced Physics teacher is probably low. I'd have no issue with a teacher earning 193K if they were a proven, quality instructor in a high demand, low supply discipline. I had a former college professor for a biology teacher in HS and she would have been worth that, if not more.

Nobody deserves to get paid a dime more than they do, unless that person is a job creator or is extremely wealthy already. Awww bullshit. Half or more the people listed aren't even teachers or only marginally so.

First, teach, I'm not posting salaries - that's 'Zero'. I understand your concerns with that. Passing judgement? I'm guilty. Anyhow, if we flipped this around and the salaries of the individuals in my office were posted, I'd have no issues pointing out the individuals, either via performance or position, who are significantly overpaid (and underpaid). I think teachers would be better served to be more open and honest about their peers as opposed to adopting a 'blue code of silence' style posture...And I think the kids would benefit.

Where did you find it? I don't think I can go talk to my son's teacher knowing I earning about the same as her and I don't have a no college degree.

I have a feeling anyone who is pointing out the "outlandish" pay of staff and teachers is probably trying to stir up resentment towards the workers so they can slash their pay. Meanwhile, the OP is making plans for how to spend the extra money they'll be giving themselves at the administrative offices.

My guess is we won't be seeing a list of salaries for the board and the people who work for them directly. Those people probably have $650,000 salaries.

I just have to laugh at you bastards. If FCPS is such a great deal, why are we constantly hiring? Answer: FCPS has tremendous turnover. And it isn't all retirements, not by a long shot.

Hundreds of young and non-retirement eligible teachers quit every year. Why, because it is a royal pain in the ass, and with their educations, they can do better elsewhere.

The school district isn’t talking, beyond a statement that said Lanigan turned down a settlement offer in November 2011, which did not mention that he’d been asking for the money since July 2010. But the real reason that Fairfax authorities stonewalled Lanigan is an 11-page “Investigative Report” by school district investigator Stephen Kerr, written a month after Lanigan’s acquittal. The report concluded that Lanigan — a hugely popular gym teacher, soccer coach and father of three -- was still an unsavory fellow, he just happened to be found not guilty by a Fairfax County jury.

Kerr’s report was riddled with inaccuracies and incomplete information (we’ll get to that in a minute), but it was circulated to top Fairfax school officials. So when Lanigan came to the district and asked that his legal fees be reimbursed, the district didn’t even bother with a reply. They just ignored him. Forced him to hire a lawyer. Then spent $141,000 of taxpayer money.

This guy is crazy! He tries to get into Student personal Business and its so unprofessional. Has anyone else had any problems with this guy? I'm just curious, My children and other parents have told me How he is harrasing his students taking there phones and calling people on them, reading there text messages and answering there calls. He also black mails students behind closed doors saying hell give them a punishment for something he could never prove so they will give him information or rat out other kids. Its insane to have this in our public school system, it makes our kids feel they enter a hostile enviroment everyday.

We all know that Mr Arrington suspended Josh Anderson and recommended him for an expulsion hearing because he smelled pot in Josh's car, which led Josh to tragically commit suicide. Last year, he caught me after I bought weed in the school's bathroom. He suspended me for 10 days and recommended me for expulsion. The first day of my suspension, he called and told me to come back to school. That's one example of his "selected punishment". He has also read my texts and looked at pictured on my phone. Earlier this year when the school police officer brought a condom he found on the floor to Mr Arrington's office, Mr Arrington tossed it to me and said I could use it more than he could. His acts are extremely inappropriate, unproffessional, and bias.

Hillsboro High School Principal Sloan Presidio has been tapped for a high-ranking administrative position in the Tigard-Tualatin School District.

Presidio will take over as the district's director of coordinated education services and will oversee programs for middle and high schools, English language learners, talented and gifted students and Title I reading, math and writing. His job is effective July 1.

Man...Im happy for these people...Teachers have always been known to be underpaid. Somebody finally took care of them...not to mention, they have to deal with ragedy children who lack respect. Good for them.

I'm going to the next board meeting and I'm going to suggest these people should get raises.

The only people who believe these are outlandish salaries are either low-skilled hourly wage employees, or they grew up in a backwater town where the highest income was around the national average.

This is not an average area, those salaries are barely keeping up with the cost of living in this area.

I agree some of these teachers are over paid, there would be less need for all these teachers if the government would do it's job and send the spanish packing back across the border.

Seriously? You think these salaries are "outlandish"? That teacher making #83k probably has been working at least 25 years. Those that are in the $50k range and lower don't seem "outlandish" for this area.

I emailed her on Friday and today and 1pm she emailed me saying she wanted my addresses. I emailed her my addresses and called the HR number and she was not there at the time. I wonder if she does anything at work.

Whether or not you think FCPS should have immersion classes, these teachers still teach students as any other teacher would. I don't see where these salaries are high. Those teachers making $69k have probably been teaching 17 years or so. A lot of people I know in this area wouldn't do that job for that $.

Why shouldn't I expect that? We financed your stupidity, obviously.

The ROI on higher education is becoming more questionable with every passing day. Not that the academy is without its value, but let's not kid ourselves. There's a reason Peter Thiel is offering college students $200K to drop out and start new ventures when they have good ideas.

The incentives are so skewed, and often additionally muddled through federal funding that the desire to please the customer is withering away. Universities are becoming non-controversial places to practice the skills of surviving in bureaucracy, as if that should be a life goal for anyone.

I have and continue to work with research scientists and have spun companies out from research found in university labs. There's a reason that many schools aren't good at technology transfer: The basic concepts of business and economics seem to have been left by the wayside.

It's pretty pricey if the retiree has a family on the plan. About $1,300 a month depenending on the plan. For a retiree + one, it looks like it costs between $900-$1,100 a month. For an individual, it's between $500-600 a month.

When will the teachers union speak out about all the top heavy admin jobs that do nothing but create more work for the teachers. The majority are double dipping from the county and are related to the high ups by blood or marriage. The nepotism that goes on is outlandish. Maybe one of the teachers that post on here can explain this practice and why they remain silent on it. I had to visit the Gatehouse and saw nothing but people playing on the computers shopping, others walking the halls passing the time of day. Little to no work being done.

It's crazy to think many assistant principals and principals never once taught in the classroom. They sneak into their positions through other avenues. Disgraceful.

I've been asking the OP if they are new to this area and didn't understand the cost of living. Maybe they actually do know what outlandish means, and these salaries are just unfamiliar to them.

What qualifications, or even research have you done to make these judgements on a teacher's instructional capabilities? Teachers start out at significantly less pay than many other fields. Also, most teachers I know work during the summer because we have to. Education is the one field that everybody has an opinion on but few have done any research or know anything about other than what limited experience they had as a student. Empty unfunded mandates with meaningless evaluation methods that do not inform our instruction are what choke the life, creativity, and effectiveness out of the system. What pedagogical background do any of the politicians who come up with this crap have? we need to fix the system. Are we to guess from these posts that teachers are not worth competetive pay? Most of us do not get it anyway.

A couple points: some of these folks, like the music teachers making 90k, have probably been working there for 30 years. They deserve what they are making.

On the other hand, there are WAY too many ADMINISTRATORS involved in FCPS. If they found a way to cut down on those folks, maybe FCPS could afford to give those teachers a raise!!

You know what, Im changing my major to Physics w/minor in Math. Just finish H.S. I go to NOVA, started in the summer, but always been keeping a job working full time weekends and late evenings. Can't stand my low wage service job, but I'd make 4 times what I make now, after I transfer to Mason in Jan '13 and graduate in a few years with Physics/Math degree combo. I have to work, my parents make too much money for me to get much financial aid, and worse off is that they won't give hardly any money so I'm forced to work to continue my education; they feel I have to contribute to my education costs. That's fine. Yet, they say a degree in Physics with minor in Math, and you bypass most, if not all, the teacher exams. Just think, what I can make in about 3 more years. I am not really locked into Fairfax County, as both Montgomery County and the striking school district in Chicago make more money than here in Fairfax.

THose same 10,000 applicants also send out another 100 applications elsewhere. Every person offered a job at FCPS doesn't accept the offer. It's not infrequent that the 1st applicant offered declines the job.

People think they want to be teachers until they actually do it. They like the idea of getting their summers off, of shaping the minds of America's youth and all that crap. Then, the realization: they are glorified babysitters and get paid low wages. They think Fairfax pays well since it is such an affluent community, but it doesn't.

Fairfax County Public Schools is also projecting a $94 million budget gap of its own if it doesn’t get any additional funding from the county, primarily due to projected enrollment growth, according to Superintendent Jack Dale. Any increase in schools spending would mean more cuts in other areas of the county budget.



Thanks goodness we gave those raises out last year before this bad news hit.

There was absolutely NO WAY our elected officials could have predicted this shortfall---NO WAY.

It makes sense to give raises instead of building a reserve.

Actually the board did forsee part of the situation last year. But the new board was unwilling to make a difficult decision and are now going to pay the price with regard to the VRS debt. The next two years are going to be grim. Just for the record many of the positions that are listed above are eleven or twelve-month positions hence the higher salaries.

I think the raise last year was 1%, but I'd have to double check. That's after a few years of pay freezes.

I understand. It's a lot of money overall, but 1% COLA is not a big raise per employee.

The budget shortage could be cut in half in a day if all the inept administrators who have been moved to central office jobs would be terminated. Instead of publicly airing their non-criminal gaffs and the subsequent civil law suits for firing them, the school system continues to model the federal government and get bigger and bigger.

There are six people who oversee my discipline. I cannot list one thing that their office has done to help me in my classroom in the past five years. They need to be Gordon Geckoed out the door.

Now, I will say that the good folks in the elementary classrooms are underpaid. They work with the same group of 30+ youngsters all day.

Middle school and high school teachers get off easy with a 90 minute planning period everyday when they have no true IPR.

Also, most of the engineers are grossly underpaid. The the custodians are not compensated well either.

The problem is that the people who decide who gets cut are the people who are the highest paid employees in the system (the ones in central office). They certainly aren't going to cut their own salaries or staffs, yet it's okay to cut the custodial staff, clerical staff, etc. out in the schools. It's okay to raise the class sizes and make the teachers and parents (and kids---gee, aren't they the reason we exist?) suffer. Meanwhile, they sit in a building with locked doors at every turn. Yeah, there might be an angry parent, teacher, or kid out there.

teaching HS or MS is a god damn joke. the hardest part is showing up on time.

What would you say to a teacher who took medical leave the day before students came back in September because she is unbalanced, and she sure is. Came back the next year part time as a math resource teacher, accomplished nothing, rarely showed up for work and this went on for two years. Then this year is a part time ESOL teacher and rarely meets with students. The administration has not done a thing about the problem and we are left to try and explain to parents in conferences why their children are not being seen by the specialists. It is a sad day when some of us are working so hard and this person is getting paid to do nothing.

There seems to be some misunderstandings on this discussion...
First of all, to be an administrator requires the appropriate degree (masters) and license. You cannot go from IA to admin without a hell of a lot of steps in between.
Second, to suggest that high school teachers are less hardworking then elementary teachers is ridiculous. You simply cannot compare the two positions, because they are so different. While elementary communicates with 30 parents at a time, high school deals with 150. While elementary has to prepare more lessons per day (many high school teachers repeat a lesson or two a day), they don't have to write letters of recommendation and many don't coach or sponsor activities (which by the way are not all accompanied by a stipend). If you ask most elementary teachers they will tell you they could never do the job of a high school teacher. If you ask most high school teachers they will tell you they could never do the job of an elementary school teacher. Either way, no good can come of teachers bashing each other. Let's be real, enough of that comes from the community.
Third (and finally though I could go on forever), there are bad employees in every profession. There are many teachers who have dedicated their lives to students, often to the detriment of time with their own family. I've been teaching for 12 years and spend, on average, 55+ hours a week on my job. I sponsor activities because the students want them. I plan lessons to accommodate the incredibly diverse range of students in my classroom. I make the effort to get to know each of my students (I have 150 just in my classes) and to keep constant lines of communication open. And I am not the exception, there are MANY teachers who do the same thing quietly day in and day out. We don't expect to make millions, we expect to be able to live in the community we serve. To say we got a 1% raise is laughable. We are employees of a step-increase system, whereby we are supposed to get a minimal increase in salary each year (not even accounting for COLA). We were denied that for several years and only this year have seen a small increase in salary. We will never recover the pay that was lost to us. We should be able to look at the pay scale today and know what we will be making 3 years from now (hoping, of course, that if a COLA is warranted that it is given). But that is no longer the case. It is what it is and most teachers continue to work just as hard to a community that appears ungrateful most of the time. For those of you on here who seem to believe that schools and all who are associated with them are evil and always out to "get kids," I'm sorry you have such a negative perspective on life and really hope that you will find some kind of peace. Living like that must be exhausting.

How do you know she gets off work at 9am? How long has she been working for the school system? Maybe she is contracted for 1/2 a day. If she's been with the system for 20 years or so, that salary would be about right for half-time.

I'd be shocked if DCPS responded to the FOIA request.

And where does the money to pay their salaries come from? Duh.

Not bitter at all. But I've paid a ton of property, business, and other taxes to the county over the last 20+ years and I/we certainly have an interest in knowing how it's spent. Which is why the information is made public.

A Fairfax County elementary school principal has been charged with hit-and-run driving after allegedly backing his pickup truck into a school bus at his school, knocking a child to the ground, and then driving away.

Police issued a misdemeanor summons to J. Martin Marinoff Jr., 49, of Alexandria, following the incident Tuesday afternoon at Canterbury Woods Elementary School in Annandale. No one was hurt, and damage from the collision was minor.

Marinoff did not return calls to the school and his home seeking comment. He took over as principal at Canterbury Woods last month. Previously, he was principal at Kings Glen Elementary School.

As someone who is married to a FCPS administrator, I can tell you that my husband makes a pretty good living. However, with the level of education attained by my husband, he could make so much more money in the private sector. A school administrator is like the CEO of a small corporation. There are staff issues, budget considerations, parents, and students that all have to be "managed" successfully in order for a school to be productive. School administrators are required to attend all school functions: Pep rallies, science fairs, PTA meetings, etc, and all in the evening hours, which are technically outside contract hours.

Oh, and for those of you who think that every school employee only works 9.5 months a year, that is only the teachers. Administrators and their support staff are on 12 month contracts. They get the same holidays as everyone else. They do not get off during winter break or spring break or time off in the summer, unless they take leave.

Fairfax spends alot of money on their schools. FCPS is the largest employer in the state of Virginia. FCPS is the envy of most of the county school systems in the state. We have access to educational services that other counties just cannot afford to provide. People with children want to live in FFX County because of our schools. I feel fortunate that I can afford to live here, even on a FCPS puny salary.

Are you sure that your husband is really attending all of these activities? Because sometimes more than one school has an activity scheduled at the same time.

Sounds to me like you need to check your credit report for any credit cards you don't know about, and then find out which hotels he uses that credit card at.

Let's assume it's Bryant which has a total population of 340 kids.

This is teabagger nutjob stuff. They have been led to believe they are empowered to make fiscal decisions because they pay taxes on their menial wage labor incomes.

Considering things like factors and situations is asking way too much of them. These are not intellectually honest or curious people.

The option to have part of your paycheck set aside each month so that you could "receive a pay check" in the summer doesn't even exist anymore. Your annual salary is based on your contract months, and contrary to the administrator's wife, most teachers do not have all that time off either. Most teachers spend time during winter and spring break coaching sports, sponsoring activites, grading papers, writing recommendation letters for students who are trying to secure scholarships or entrance to college (obviously more over winter break than spring break on this one) or simply catching up on lesson planning. Most teachers spend part of their "outrageous" salaries purchasing supplies for their students and classrooms.
Thank you to all of those teachers who are in the job to make a difference in the lives of young people. God help us if we start paying them any less, or else they might opt to take their skills (and if you don't think it takes skills to manage a classroom of teenagers you are crazy) somewhere else. Without quality education in this county everyone's property value will drop...and then there will really be something to complain about!

So manage your finances you worthless turd. Take your yearly salary and divide by twelve, is it that hard?

This is a very finite work skill. There is no way you walk away from being a school Principal to the CEO of anything. In fact, if you left and went to work for any defense contractor in the area, you would be a junior analyst because there are no skills on your resume they would want.

I don't see any data on ROTC participation rates in schools. The phots on the websites show about 20-25 kids.

I taught full-time in Fairfax County for 7 years. I left for another teaching job out of state and my salary jumped $20,000. FCPS scaled WAY BACK on beginning salaries in the 1990's. You're lucky that these people make only as much as they do after 25 years or more of service. Teaching is a "white collar" job, my friends. These are low-level salaries for white color jobs,especially when you consider what their counter-parts make in the Northern Virginia area. Realize that the lower you pay, the more stupid they get. These people prepare your children for college and for life. How stupid do you want them to be?

The median household income in Fairfax is pushing six figures. Is it too much to ask that school employees make something that might put them into the middle class of the district in which they teach?

Remember also that teachers have on-going certification requirements, which they have to pay for themselves. Which means they have to go to school sometimes at night or in the summer. Also, when do you think they do all their course planning? It isn't like a box shows up with Senior Physics and they just teach from a script. Plus, they have to implement an asinine SOL "teach to the test" policy which is the antithesis of learning. And they have to deal with annoying parents like me.

I'm with you on the senior people who have a "3" in front of their six figure salary. Or even a "2". There isn't a single federal employee who makes more than $200k (except the President and VP). And bear in mind that the salary is just the tip of the iceberg for a guy like Jack Dale. They get cars and "deferred compensation" (HUGE cash contributions on back-loaded retirement funds). He also gets raises when no one else does. It's like with corporate CEO's where the idea is that you have to pay for talent. I doubt it. Plenty of places seem to be able to get by without that kind of investment.

The only profession in the entire world where you make 90k to be a babysitter and teach some basics. God damn you greedy union leeches. You want to live in nova comfortably? get a real degree like everyone else and use it. The education around here is mediocre at absolute best, and the whining teachers are just insufferable.

There isn't a schedule for the highest paid federal employees because those jobs have been privatized. When you top out in the GS scale, you move to a place like SAIC, Booz Allen, Lockheed, etc. and make obscene amounts of money helping them rig the bidding and contracting process.

As far as the cars and retirement benefits, look at all the agency heads who drive around in huge armed military style motorcades and have access to Air Force C-21A for official and personal travel.

Maybe you should have not had those expectations in the first place.

The Fairfax County School Board found nearly $10 million in unspent funding in its current budget and will set most of the money aside to spend next year -- a downpayment on a budget deficit expected to go as high as $162 million.

The board won't go through it's entire $2.4 billion budget looking for additional savings, although officials said they expect to find more unused cash following the fourth-quarter budget review.

I've worked for FCPS for 6 years. For four of them no one has gotten an annual step increase.

I am retired from one county agency, drawing a retired salary, and working for FCPS making another 60K......for a total of about 130K.....all of which comes from your taxes. Oh...and by the way.....I dont do shit and enjoy the hell out of it. So please .....post my salary, I am proud of it.

Salaries of all FCPS employees are published on the FCPS website. This is not secret information. You are right to suggest that most of the employees that working directly in a classroom are overpaid and underworked. Teachers, however, are overworked and underpaid. We are only contracted to work 7.5 hours a day, but we are EXPECTED to stay after school until 3:30, sometimes 4. At some schools, teachers are required to serve "lunch duty" during their own lunch. We are inundated with pointless paperwork and delegated responsibilities that should be fulfilled by other people. (For example, I am responsible for assigning detention for attendance, even though we have someone who is in charge of discipline for attendance issues.) I am a firm believer in performance pay; that way, the out-of-shape PE teacher who sits around with his clipboard and has no state assessments does not get the same pay that I do. At the same time, I didn't get into this profession for its awesome pay. I could be making 3x as much working for a publishing company, but I choose teaching. I love working with kids, I like being able to continue learning, I enjoy being around others who are just as professional and smart. I just don't like being around the uneducated lumps that somehow got a job in the system. (Believe me, it doesn't take much to qualify as a teacher.) Let's not generalize and say we are all overpaid.

Stop bitching about your job. It is your choice to work there and make "3x" less. You didn't have to start contributing to your retirement until last year and it was subsidized with a raise so you would see a difference in your check. You don't have to work for 2.5 months for the summer and you make more money than some 12-month employees. You also get many if the holidays the kids do besides teacher work days.

You're not in such a bad situation. If you can't manage your money, learn how or shut up.

Edit: subsidized so you would NOT have to see a difference in your check.

Just to add to this discussion, FCPS get's 60% of the county budget and are asking for more. People should keep this in mind when more county programs get cut.

Money doesn't grow on trees. If there were no taxes then they would have no salary, so taxes do pay their salaries. Personally, instead of using a general pool of tax payer money, I believe parents should have to pay for their kids to use the school system, even if it is a small amount. Not only would it decrease the general tax burden, but studies show if you invest money in something you are more likely to be involved with it.

Here are the problems:
1. People in the school system who don't do anything need to be fired. The unions protect them so they are removed from teaching but given some office job where they do nothing but waste our tax payer dollars.
2. We need to not drawing all the money from the general tax payer dollars and require parents to pay tuition. People need to take responsibility for their kids. They need to stop with the attitude that it is societies job to pay for their kids and the teachers jobs to babysit for them, rather than to teach them things.

I BET YOUR KIDS ARE THE ONES THAT ARE ALWAYS BITCHING ABOUT SOMETHING. AND YOUR THE KIND OF PARENTS THAT WANTS TO SEE OUR COLLEGE DEGREE AND THINK YOUR BETTER THAN US.

Reminder: Teachers work 194 days. That is less than 40 weeks per year.
The job of teacher is stressful. However, there are lots of other jobs where people work long,long hours and get paid less.

Anyone on this thread commenting about how ridiculous it is to have electives and special programs, or how teachers and admin only work 9 months a year are so blatantly out of touch with how the world works, it scares me that you've had children.

BS. 75 - 80 hours per week? So you start at 6AM and work til 10PM every day of the work week, or work 8 hours a day every single day of the week? Doesn't happen. Don't believe you. Go back to the idea of dealing with whiny and pampered kids and parents - at least that is plausible.

Teachers has forever worked second jobs - summer camps, tutoring, retail, whatever. If you only worked 9 mos a year and 6 hours a day in a very predictable pattern, you would too. A second job? Of course. You have to be completely lazy to NOT get a second job. Pretty much anyone who has a job where they have or can arrange long periods of open time - firefighters, pilots, flight attendants, etc. - finds a way to add a second job.

This is true. NEA is actually an "association" and AFT is a "labor union" affiliated with the AFL-CIO. As a Right To Work state, membership is not required. There is no collective bargaining and contracts are annual.

Rarely do I complain. I'm a teacher and I'll be honest... I can't imagine working 75-80 hours per week. If the previous post is true, then that teacher needs to step back and prioritize. I will say that the workload has increased greatly over the past few years, but not to that point. I'm in my 20th year and I would say on average, I spend about 45 hours a week in the building. Add to that another 7-10 hours at home. So, for me, it's probably an average week of 52-55 hours per week. I don't get everything done, but at some point a person has to call it a day.

As far as the summer months go, I will pretty much be able to avoid work related requirements from June 22-August 25. There might be a few hours here and there of miscellaneous tasks which I will choose to tackle. I spend much of my summer volunteering.

Something to ponder upon!

If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his/her office at one time, all of whom had different needs, different learning styles, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job.

Shocker - Most of us went to school and know what teachers do.

This makes me sick to my stomach. 98% of these people don't deserve their salaries. I know people on this list and have watched them work. Lots of the "specialists" organize bookcases and water plants for salaries that the real teachers dream about. I have seen it---waste is out there. If they could root out the waste, they might be able to pay the teachers a bit more. Even if they couldn't, at least the teachers would not feel like chumps for working so hard. Those "specialists" cause a lot of bad feelings in the schools. EVERYONE needs to be in classrooms with accountability (that means responsibility for diagnosing, creating lessons, and grading of students). Without that type of classroom accountability, these people say they are helping, but they also say "that's not my job" and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The admin. has those people around so they can say they are helping if anyone complains about a teacher, but the teachers have no respect for these people (and to be fair, the "specialists" have no power over the teachers anyway). The whole thing is a complete waste.

Not everyone has a cell phone and internet access and not all materials are available on-line. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable substitution for a library and librarians not only assist in organizing and locating materials they help those that need it access those materials

We should take a page from China on this. At a certain point they weed out the hopeless cases and train them to work in factories/trades/etc. Only the kids that can make the grade are allowed to continue their education. That's part of the reason why the Asian countries rank so high in education and we rank so low.

If you can't READ by the time you reach high school then I don't see any reason why the taxpayers should continue to fund your (obviously ineffective) education.
