No they don't. The "Summer Pay" option is no more. Gone, never to return, Finito, the end (it died last year).

But I suppose we'll still be hearing about it for thirty or forty more years. News like that travels s l o w.

An important thing to remember here is relative surplus value. Teachers generate an enormous surplus value for what they do. I calculated mine at about $500,000 per year, assuming all of my seniors graduate (they are all on track). As long as we aren't paying teachers into the half million mark, the economy will reap the benefits.

The "whole summer" is 8 weeks. Since my husband and I are both teachers he works two jobs for four of the 8 weeks so we can afford our townhouse in the next county over from where we work. We have four degrees between us and, if I worked full time, we would make almost $120,000. If you think that's that a lot of money in Nova you are crazy. I have friends who don't have any degrees who make as much as we do. And we're still paying student loans. With the cost of living we will be chased out of here if we ever want a house with a yard for our one child. Not to worry, people, the suits are creating a system in which anybody will be able to come in and teach your children so you won't be forced to share your precious money with schmucks like us. Or you will have the opportunity to send your kids to private school which is what I would do if I could afford it.

90,000 for a teacher means 90,000. Teachers have to take money from there paychecks throughout nine months so that they can receive funds during the suumer months. They are not paid for work the other three months.

All of the schooling required to become a teacher is ridiculous. And assuming your story is true, being an education major has a really bad ROI.

You shouldn't need a masters degree for anything under college level teaching. Hell, you should be able to teach K-5 with an associates degree. Natural teaching ability should be emphasized over a pile of meaningless degrees.

Teachers can whine all day long about being underpaid but the truth is that FCPS is FLOODED with applicants each year....yes flooded.

Many people are willing to work for these so called paltry wages, so why should FCPS pay more than the "going rate"?

Teachers are no different than any other profession. Employers adjust wages paid based on the labor supply/demand.

The only teachers who should be paid more are the highly qualified teachers-those teaching high level math and science classes. Those jobs are in fact hard to fill.

ANYONE can teach 3rd grade math or science---not true with high level math/science classes.

Hardly. Teaching is more than knowing the subject matter. I'd bet that more than 90 percent of you idiots on this thread don't even know enough 3rd grade math or science to teach 1 kid let alone have the ability to plan out a year's worth of lessons, interact with parents and administrators, relate to your students...ALL of your students...manage the personalities of 30 8 and 9 years olds and have them pass their required tests year in and year out.

The fact is that it takes more skill to teach ANY subject at any grade level than anyone on this thread realizes.

Classroom management. That is the difference between a teacher and someone who just knows the subject matter. Kids talk, they fidget, some may get their work done faster than others, and a teacher has to figure out how to make all these little moving parts work together to create a productive learning environment for the WHOLE CLASS. That requires major skills. I couldn't do it; I wouldn't do it. Even for the perk of having off the entire month of July.

WASHINGTON - Police in Nicaragua have detained one of the FBI's ten most-wanted fugitives, child-porn suspect Eric Justin Toth.

The head of detectives for Nicaragua's National Police force says Toth was detained near the Honduran border.

Glenda Zavala said Monday that Toth had been detained Saturday, based on an international detention request.

The former Washington D.C. elementary school teacher faces accusations he possessed and produced child pornography.

He lost his teaching job in 2008 after another teacher found images of child pornography on a school camera in Toth's possession. He then disappeared.

The FBI had offered a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the 31-year-old Toth

Sure, sure. We've all heard this song and dance before

Teaching is more complicated than astrophysics and heart surgery combined, teachers should be paid $500K, they really work 15 months per year, only 0.5% of the population is smart enough to teach someone the multiplication tables, etc, etc.

Give me a break. Teaching is no different that any other profession. And like most other professions only a very small percentage are really good, most are mediocre, and some are downright lousy.

Lawrence Joynes, 54, a teacher for 10 years at New Hampshire Estates Elementary School in Montgomery County, Maryland, was arrested in February after police traced emails between him and a suspected child porn producer.
A collection of disturbing photographs, recovered by police show Joynes sticking his finger into the mouths of 'approximately seven' students and putting a peppermint stick into a young girl's mouth.

Teaching is NOT more complicated than astrophysics and heart surgery combined and teachers should not be paid 500k per year and work 15 months and .5% of the population is smart enough to teach multiplication tables, etc, etc.

No one has said that except "another awesome teacher". Get over yourself dude.

Since this is a thread bashing teachers salaries it's only fair to respond to the questions and criticism directed their way. Why isn't anyone bashing MD salaries and pilot salaries and IT Tech salaries, plumbers, electricians, etc, etc?

The point is, it takes skill and training to teach just like it takes skill and training to fix a car, fly a plane, design a building, wire a house, write a computer program and anything else. No, teaching does not require the same skills, training and interest level as those careers, but it does take skill and training.

To say that teaching a 3rd grader is something "anyone" can do is ridiculous.

And who the Hell said everyone is really good at teaching?

Back in the 70's and 80's, teaching elementary was a job for women, not for a male head of household.

While America needs and should value it's teachers, we shouldn't get so carried away and overcompensate them for their 9 months of work.

Truth is, many teachers understand where the butter for their bread comes from and constantly piss and moan of how "hard they work" and how "dangerous" teaching is. Give us a break!

Now if you are teaching the hard sciences, it's something else entirely. But teaching elementary kids w/o language or learning problems is basic human nature- just above the act of babysitting.

Highest salaries in DC metro area are in Montgomery County. After that comes DC, Alexandria, Arlington and I think Falls Church. Prince William might even be ahead of Fairfax (especially after health insurance and the local pension that FFX deducts). Fairfax comes in just ahead of Prince Georges County. Not good.

People are just ignorant. I agree that all these teachers deserve what they make. FCPS is one of the highest ranked in the nation #1. #2 theses people spend more than 8 hours a day dedicating themselves to educated the individuals that will inherit our nation and effect the world. No matter what they teach or what roll within the system they have their efforts make a difference in not only the lives of our kids but in everyone's lives.. EVEN the cosmetology teachers and security guards.

FFX schools are bloated and the test scores inflated. Use the power of the vote, tell your county supervisor to stop rubber stamping every school budget that comes down the line.

Taxpayers should not pay for the Fairfax band trip to the Rose Parade. If it is that important, let the Rose Parade people pay for it or let the band families pay for it.

I don't want to pay for it or a lot of this other crap. I'll vote for Cuccinelli if he will lower taxes.

No taxpayer money helps pay for any school field trip. The students who are going to the Rose Bowl pay their own way. They do aggressive fundraising, but no one has the obligation to contribute. If you want to go after the teachers and administration, go for it in your mean-spirited manner, but don't imperil opportunities for our students that are once-in-a-lifetime experiences with your unfounded allegations. And if you're so concerned about taxes remember that the less FCPS schools are funded the less desirable it will be for businesses to move here and strengthen the tax base. Right now in the area we rank only above Prince Georges County in compensation. That's really a sad state of affairs!

I stumbled upon this post on accident, but I couldn't stop reading once I started. One thing I saw over and over that is simply incorrect is this nonsense about teachers have 3 months off. Here is how to figure out the real answer. First, pick up a calendar and turn to where it says "June." Put your finger on the 20th. That is when most teachers were able to leave for the summer. If you look under the 20th, you'll see the number 27. That means one week has passed. Continue doing that until you get to August 26th. By my count, it's 9 weeks and a few days. It might be okay to round up by 33% when you are working in the private sector and are typing up invoices, but when you are trying to argue a point about "time off for teachers" it's not. So that's about 360 hours less per year than a typical 9-5 job. We'll come back to 360 in a minute.

How many private sector employees get an hour or more for lunch? MOST! Drive by a fast food area on a weekday and it looks like a job fair. It must be nice to get to go have a hot sit down meal everyday. I have friends that go to the gym for an hour and THEN eat lunch. Students only have 30 minutes to eat, so teachers get less. The students don't walk out the door and appear in the cafeteria. Teachers have to walk them there and make sure they are all set. Teachers are lucky if they have 25 minutes to eat once they get back to their classrooms. That's about enough time to get out your food, shove it in your mouth, and send an email. Since other jobs give you an hour, let's go ahead and give that 30 minutes back to teachers as working for "free." That's 90 hours over the course of the year.

Another thing many of you fail to realize is that salary is only based on contract hours. Most elementary school contract hours start 15 minutes before the bell and 15 minutes after school. It would be IMPOSSIBLE to be a highly effective classroom teacher with only 30 minutes of planning time per day. Drive by an elementary school an hour or two after school and count how many cars are still there. Those are teachers staying late and working. If a teacher stays for one hour extra per day, (and the good ones do), that's an additional 180 hours per school year. So 90 + 180 = 270.

How many private sector jobs require additional UNPAID hours outside of work for conferences, meetings and events? VERY FEW. During parent conference days, teachers will easily work an extra 10 hours. During report cards, that's easily another 10 hours of work per quarter. They are also required to attend at least 15 hours of school events per year. 270 + 65 = 335.

So where are those pesky 25 more hours that private sector jobs work that teachers don't? Let me think... Sitting on the toilet, cigarette breaks, surfing online, 10 extra minutes at lunch, chatting at the water cooler, checking your fantasy team, skipping out early of Fridays, starting late on Mondays, running out for a coffee, , catching a workout during lunch, checking out the hottie on the 2nd floor, and complaining about your outlandish FCPS salaries. Teachers get to do exactly ZERO of those things during the course of the day.

Next time you want to complain about the worth of other people, take a look in the mirror. Most teachers earn less than they deserve.

Hourly FCPS employees have it even worse than teachers. Summer is a period of U N E M P L O Y M E N T. And through a special deal with the State, we are NOT eligible for jobless benefits.

So, I spend my summer "vacation" driving an asphalt dump truck on paving projects. It's hot, dangerous (ever wonder why cops are assigned to paving?) work. Most of it is done at night which takes getting used to.

I do what I have to do, I just don't want to hear that I'm on a fucking vacation.

How many of the people posting here have to get someone to "cover" their work while they go to the bathroom? Teachers have to call a colleague who is on a prep period or whose students happen to be at PE class in order to go to the bathroom. The teacher can't just leave the room. Students are never to be left unsupervised. If anything were to happen without supervision, the teacher would likely lose her teaching license (among other things).

How many people posting here have to call someone to do their job when they get sick? How many have to plan for that person who is there when they are sick and follow up on things that didn't go well?

I've noticed many posts with 3rd grade SOL questions that have been posted in an attempt to simplify teaching as a profession. Those are probably questions from the 3rd grade SOL and many adults would know the answer without even thinking. Although, I'd bet you'd be surprised at how many adults would get those questions wrong.... but that's another story altogether. Let's get back to the 8 year old kids.

Do you have an eight year old child? Have you ever spent 8 hours per day with one? They are not as independent as the child you imagine. They are not the kid from Two and a Half Men making millions. Have you ever spent 8 hours with 25 eight year olds? Those of you out there claiming to know what the hell it is like to spend 8 hours with 25 kids are all full of sh*t. Unless you've done it.... SHUT THE UCK UP!!! You don't know ISHT!!

If you spent as much time worrying about being a good mother/father/uncle/aunt/grandma/grandpa/cousin/friend as you did bitching about teacher salaries... maybe the next generation wouldn't be a bunch of spoiled brats!

Too bad you aren't giving all the information. Some of the teachers have been working more than 20 years in their position and should be getting even higher. If you had any Clue what it takes to be a teacher, you wouldn't be making this page. Your pathetic and I'd love to know your name and what you do for a living instead of being a chicken shit and hiding behind a computer screen. Let me guess...your mom didn't love you enough and your dad thought you were a loser so you're trying to get attention by giving out others successful info. How's that pizza delivery going? These salaries are heavy handed, especially for the administrators. It seems that pay was increased during good times but not deflated during the recession. The teachers are very well paid also, considering that they get to spend time with their own children over the summer or make extra money watching other people's kids. The ones who suffer are the new, energetic, young teachers.

In defense of the person who listed the salaries, it is also good to keep for the public to know where their tax dollars go. My property tax increased 30 % in the past 2 years. Now, I know why.

About me - I am a working mom of 3. I have a B.S. degree from a top 20 public university. I work right through summer when the cost of child care exceeds my take home pay. I have to leave work early on Mondays to get my children due to early release. SACC for Monday early release ONLY would be wonderful. I get treated as though I am an aloof parent because I do work. I spent extra money this summer on math tutoring for 2 of my 3 due to the high quality of education being produced by these high salaried people. FCPS Summer education programs are not located near my home or my work because I am considered to be rich. HA! I make less and pay out more as a result than some of these people here.

Real solutions involves offering real teaching to all students. My kids can't take notes because hand writing is barely taught. If these people had to be accountable for their output, many of them would not get raises.

You know these teachers have been working for years and put in the time in the county, same as english teachers, math teachers, science teachers, etc? They put in just as much time teaching the subject that they were hired for. They aren't being paid more than someone teaching the same amount of time.

If people think this is bad you should see salaries of IT workers with almost no skills. Take a few cyber security exams, get a clearance, welcome to 6 figures for not doing much.

At least most teachers care and are passionate. Yes some are overpaid but this happens in many industries.

They live in one of the most expensive areas in the country. You want them to be paid minimum wage?

If parents had to be accountable for the trash they dump off on the schools, many of them would be in jail. If your kid has not mastered hand-writing by the age at which note-taking skills become important, that's YOUR FAULT!!! You deserve a long and harsh sentence.

Face it. The ignoramuses of the right-wing want first class services, low taxes, and no deficits. If they had graduated from the tenth grade, they would have realized by now that you can have any two of those things, but not all three. They still don't get it though. They just keep on with the STUPID, STUPID, STUPID. They want it all without paying for any of it.

If we pay teachers less, the talent will move to adjacent counties with better pay. In turn, the sorority girls giving drunk BJs down at Radford will be teaching your children in 2 years. The grass is always greener...

Good for you for wanting the most for your children, but it was your decision to have 3. I can't sympathize with you in terms of how much it costs to care for them.

The cost of living here is ridiculous and these salaries will reflect that. These teachers are also paying the same personal property tax that you are. Pay is scrutinized on a much higher level than this forum and I must say that these don't seem that absurd to me.

In terms of the handwriting, give me a break. You seemed pretty credible until you said that. Hire a handwriting tutor.

These salaries are not outlandish. Most educators have at least a master's degree and these salaries are low considering the fact that teachers have to continue taking training classes, at their own expense, throughout their teaching career. Heck I make twice as much at my job having just a bachelor's degree and I don't have to deal with moronic kids on a daily basis. If you think these salaries are high, then I suggest you go to school so you don't have to work the cash booth at the gas station. People gripe about teachers' salaries and then complain about education in this country. You idiots can't have it both ways.

I make more than most teachers and have no college education. I make $87k a year. I know how to budget and live just fine in FFX county too.

Now, more than ever, I am thankful that there are people out there who care enough about our future to accept the most important job in the world: educating our children. If the children of the person who posted this information are anything like their parent, they are surely whining, snot-nosed brats too. I am desperately hoping that this person didn't breed at all, to spare the world yet another moron.

If you're not willing to pay our educators a fair wage, who do you think you will get to teach? What standard of education is acceptable? Clearly whomever posted this is simply upset that they have a shitty job that pays them less than what a FCPS teacher earns. Ask yourself why you get paid less. Perhaps it is because you are undeducated and/or unskilled? Maybe this is an argument as to why you should have stayed in school and learned more; failing to get a college degree is looking like it was a much bigger mistake than you originally thought. Or maybe you earn less because you're an asshole? Complaining about the success of others isn't your real issue: your problem is really that you are a failure, and it drives you crazy to see that others whom you don't respect (educators) are far more successful than yourself. If I were a FCPS employee, or an educator, I would redouble my efforts to educate our children. The person who posted this is a sobering reminder of what can happen when children fail to finish school.

I'm curious how you obtained this information? If you're a FCPS employee, then you betrayed the trust of your employer by posting sensitive privacy information, and you should be fired immediately and fined. If you "hacked" into their computers, this is a cyber crime, and you should be in prison. The fact that you stole this information in the first place identifies you as both a thief and a scoundrel. You belong in prison, where your wages would be even less.

The next time you think about posting another person's private information, include your own name, salary, company, and position. It's only fair that we know what kind of asshole is willing to treat our educators with such disrespect. They're only our children, our future, our hopes and dreams. Why should we pay the people with whom we entrust their education a fair wage? When you are able to form an intelligent thought, post again. Until then, just go away.

Finally, to all you teachers and educators out there, THANK YOU for taking such great care of our children. THANK YOU for teaching them the knowledge and skills they will need to become successful young adults, and the future leaders and thinkers of our world. THANK YOU for suffering the insults of idiots and morons who don't understand that patiently teaching obnoxious and disrespectful children is not an easy career. THANK YOU for all that you do, you're worth every penny! I would pay you more!

Many of these people have both a B.A. and M.A. representing a considerable investment in education worth tens of thousands of dollars. Why should they not earn a salary that would allow them to pay back student loans, and be able to have a modest living? These are not banker, lawyer, or doctor salaries. Think about the cost of buying a modest home in the area or even renting an apartment. Think about the cost of raising children. These are not high salaries for the Washington Metro area.

some salaries are on Fairfax County's gov website

your forgetting: contract bids are also there. and the millions they pay out to OHIO (alias, green card workers and dc workers) for "drainage" jobs is incredible

your forgetting: the top paying jobs (supervisors, accountants, et al) specifically say that:

NOT ALL OF THE PAY IS POSTED - THAT STIPENDS OF UNDISCLOSED AMMOUNTS ARE INFACT PAID

they must think it's a "legal loophole" to say they are stealing so if they are caught they can say "oh we said so"

jail them now while you still can for their massive theft.

democrat banks will evict you, then kill you with poverty. they've done it to many already to turn the whole area a different color: democrat red, and green card color too.

you think the IRS is targeting you?

you must think that NY and other cities didn't develop "city information software" that can be used to target political affiliation, bank information, home value, color, age, unclaimed land, unclaimed property (ie, someoen dead). you must think their defamation system (court) and police are not "loyal servants". they are.

infact they have made and used such softwares for what is "less than direct in representation" and brag about it's potency.

they are fucking facists.

and any "unionized government" and high paid gov must be stopped.

all of them should "live within their means" and be visibly poorer than workers with similar jobs: which until late 80's even early 1990's they were.

$80k is good moeny, but for someone with the qualifications to be an assistant principal in FCPS, their earning potential is much higher. Keep in mind these people are often paying off advanced degrees and spent many years in the system to get to this level. I haven't been out of the system for ten years as a student and I'm already earning more than that with an undergrad degree.

Not disagreeing with you at all. I am a parent of a FFX County student, a FFX County resident and a FFX County taxpayer. Yes, the school systems budget is out of control, but posting people's name and private, or what I would like to think is private, information is not going to solve anything. If you eat at a restaurant and feel that the meal you were served is overpriced do you post the salary of the hostess, cook and server? How about car salesmen who you know rape everyone who walks through the door? When you take a load of trash to the West Ox Waste Transfer Station do you get pissed at the person who tells you it is $10 instead of $5? God damn they are just doing their job. All I am saying is do not stigmatize or demonize an employee who applied for a job the county is offering. They are just pawns in the game like everyone else. Focus on the School Board and County Council, they are the true dickheads who have put us in this situation. And the next time you see someone in a military uniform please take time out to tell them you are so pissed at them personally for the amount of money the U.S. Government has spent on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, because it really is that servicemembers fault.

A teaching contract in FCPS and most school districts is 10 months for teaching staff (11+ for all others), not 9 as is the common misconception. Teachers report the last week of August and work one or two days after the students last day, usually June 18th or so, but has been as late as June 24th. What remains then is 8 weeks of uncompensated unemployment which is tacitly understood to be partial compensation for the professions modest salaries. Most corporate types have at least a months worth of vacation and most government workers combine comp time and vacation time to have about the same or more. Factory workers are typically awarded an additional week of vacation for every five years of employment. Many eventually have 6+ weeks of vacation, as auto workers in Germany and Sweden have. Teachers have to take mandatory re-certification classes during those two months of uncompensated unemployment and very often, that's the only time they are offered. Many, many teachers take on summer jobs to make ends meet, almost mandatory if you have a family. The "summer off" sounds luxurious but it's really not. It is maybe three weeks more time off than average...in return for salaries that are generally one-third lower than similar education and training would command in the private sector.

Teachers get paid for the days they work. Most teachers are contracted for 194 days. They do not get paid for any holidays, winter or spring break and definately do not get paid for the summer months they are not working. Yes, some teachers get a paypaycheck during the summer, but that is because they have set aside money in a Summer Fund. In order to maintain a teaching certificate many teachers are taking college level, postgrad courses, during the summer.

Those teacher salaries are not that high.. lol

Especially after you take about 30% taxes out and factor in the high ass cost of living in Northern VA. I mean.. the teachers aren't starving and homeless, but they aren't living in a $300,000 house and driving a Benz either..

Earlier in this thread someone showed salaries of people making six-figures who are basically middle managers who don't give much added value to education quality of the kids. If they need to cut money, then send some of those people to the unemployment line and say, "Sorry dude! It's not personal... The RENT IS JUST TOO DAMN HIGH! We gotta let ya go!"

I used to ask myself who needs cosmetology teachers? But the kids who take cosmetology will go to work immediately after high school. They will be making a salary, learning a business, and staying off the streets while your college students are drinking, hooring, and wasting your hard-earned money.

All the bagger whining and feigned rage here. You should have paid attention in school and gone out and got yourself a decent job. I particularly love the turd who claims to make more in two months than somebody else does in two years. Kind of begs the question, If that's the case, wtf are you doing here whining about what other people make? Oh, that's right, you don't want to pay anything for one of the best education systems in the country, you just want free day care for your kids. It figures!

Give it up logical citizens. There is no talking logically to the brainwashed, just beat the pulp out of them at the polls, get their reps like Ms. Schultz off the school board and tell them to have a nice life.

How about we -

1. Cut defense spending in half and use the 300,000,000,000 dollars for education
2. Offer incentives for former & talented students with higher salaries starting at $80K
3. Deport illegals and stop wasting money on useless investments
4. Cut all these bullshit sports and useless humanities
5. Cut the number of administrative staff in half

All we need for a successful, prosperous, and manufacturing is math/science/STEM and foreign languages for export & trade.

Like Germany.

Split the secondary schools to increase teaching effectiveness at both lower and higher levels (since when does a future McDonalds burger-warmer need to know the number of people in the House of Representatives?)

This country has become plagued with bureaucracy and distracted from core elements of a modern economy.

Was that a typo? $300,000 is in no way an upper-end home in Fairfax County. Sounds like you meant $3,000,000?

The teacher salaries that are listed 60-80K are based on at least 12 plus years of experience with at least one if not two graduate degrees. OVERPAID, ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! These salaries are a disgrace.

Unless you are bald, just about everybody needs haircuts. So, unless you are willing to go at it yourself or give your BF some scissors and have at it, I would say cosmetology is a very worthy profession.

I don't know if this information will help this conversation or not, but I thought I would post it anyway.

There are many teachers, so naturally their skill levels will vary - same as with any other group. There are wonderful ones who are worth their weight in platinum, there are new ones who may become priceless or who won't ever find their way and most are somewhere in the middle. I doubt any of them go into the profession with the stated goal of not succeeding in educating the students in their classrooms. I really wish that as students got older the transfer of responsibility for their education was gradually moved onto their shoulders rather than finger-pointing at teachers, parents, administrators, etc. Not to say they don't all play their part, but as kids get older they're supposed to take on additional responsibilities in order to have more opportunities or freedoms. Why not ask more of them regarding their own studies rather than treating them as though they're all 8?

Laughing my ass off. That's why you spend a majority of your time being a tea party shit stirrer on Fairfax Underground. Run along, JUNIOR!
