When you start paying their salaries, then you can have the list.

You don't pay their salaries. You pay taxes. And if you are bitter about what teachers earn, you probably barely pay enough taxes to cover even one teacher's salary for 2 weeks.

And where does the money to pay their salaries come from? Duh.

Not bitter at all. But I've paid a ton of property, business, and other taxes to the county over the last 20+ years and I/we certainly have an interest in knowing how it's spent. Which is why the information is made public.

Marinoff, Joseph M Jr. Special Projects Administrator, Teacher Evaluation Gatehouse Administration Center I $131,612

Fairfax Principal Charged In Parking Lot Accident
The Washington Post
May 7, 1999 | Tom Jackman |

A Fairfax County elementary school principal has been charged with hit-and-run driving after allegedly backing his pickup truck into a school bus at his school, knocking a child to the ground, and then driving away.

Police issued a misdemeanor summons to J. Martin Marinoff Jr., 49, of Alexandria, following the incident Tuesday afternoon at Canterbury Woods Elementary School in Annandale. No one was hurt, and damage from the collision was minor.

Marinoff did not return calls to the school and his home seeking comment. He took over as principal at Canterbury Woods last month. Previously, he was principal at Kings Glen Elementary School.

Incredible program, great food.

As someone who is married to a FCPS administrator, I can tell you that my husband makes a pretty good living. However, with the level of education attained by my husband, he could make so much more money in the private sector. A school administrator is like the CEO of a small corporation. There are staff issues, budget considerations, parents, and students that all have to be "managed" successfully in order for a school to be productive. School administrators are required to attend all school functions: Pep rallies, science fairs, PTA meetings, etc, and all in the evening hours, which are technically outside contract hours.

Oh, and for those of you who think that every school employee only works 9.5 months a year, that is only the teachers. Administrators and their support staff are on 12 month contracts. They get the same holidays as everyone else. They do not get off during winter break or spring break or time off in the summer, unless they take leave.

Fairfax spends alot of money on their schools. FCPS is the largest employer in the state of Virginia. FCPS is the envy of most of the county school systems in the state. We have access to educational services that other counties just cannot afford to provide. People with children want to live in FFX County because of our schools. I feel fortunate that I can afford to live here, even on a FCPS puny salary.

Are you sure that your husband is really attending all of these activities? Because sometimes more than one school has an activity scheduled at the same time.

Sounds to me like you need to check your credit report for any credit cards you don't know about, and then find out which hotels he uses that credit card at.

Thank you Ashley Madison... That was very funny! ;)

Actually, my husband does not work at what would be termed a "normal" school which would engage in these types of activities. Alternative learning centers don't usually have pep rallies, etc. I was just speaking in general of what is expected of most school administrators. What that means is that he is at home with me every evening. :)
So, I'll say it again, since you seem to have missed my point: everyone can complain all they want about educator salaries, but the fact is this is a group of people, most with several advanced degrees, who do not earn what they should. But they do it anyway, because they really believe they can make a differenc.

Teabaggers are just bitter that people make more than they do, and resent having to pay taxes.

So, your husband is an administrator at an "alternative school".

Let's assume it's Bryant which has a total population of 340 kids.

Wow--that must be real demanding keeping up with all those other activities for 340 kids-particularly since there are no sports teams at Bryant.

I will assume your husband has an advanced degree in some worthless major like education which serves no purpose outside of schools.

IBM is not hiring school administrators.

Northrop is not hiring school principals.

Goldman Sachs is not hiring your husband---ever--he has zero work skills outside of managing a bunch of 14-18 year olds.

Please don't make hime sound like he is qualified to do anything other than work in a school.

You should go to your HR department and request an unpaid leave of absence for next summer. Because that is what the "whole summer off" is for most school employees, an unpaid leave of absence.

Does anyone commenting on these salaries know the circumstances of each individual and how those circumstances contribute to salaries? I'm talking tenure, experience, education, funding source (some salaries do not come directly, nor entirely, from FCPS) etc? Who is to say that someone is overpaid based only on a job title and salary? What's more, who is to say a position is needed or not needed without basing that decision on factual information, not a job title and salary info. as posted on this forum?

It may very well be that some of these positions are unnecessary or the salaries are higher than the norm or above the economics of FFX County. It may also be they are not. Same can be said of mail carriers, trash collectors, F&M employees and the likes.

Is anyone here providing objective comments and input...in the proper setting and not bitching on FU like a bunch of whiners...to FCPS and Fairfax County regarding the spending of it's budget, creation of jobs, etc?

Of course, if the intention is to post salary information on FU purely for the purposes of people making idiotic, uninformed, ridiculous, occasionally funny comments, have at it.

This is teabagger nutjob stuff. They have been led to believe they are empowered to make fiscal decisions because they pay taxes on their menial wage labor incomes.

Considering things like factors and situations is asking way too much of them. These are not intellectually honest or curious people.

The option to have part of your paycheck set aside each month so that you could "receive a pay check" in the summer doesn't even exist anymore. Your annual salary is based on your contract months, and contrary to the administrator's wife, most teachers do not have all that time off either. Most teachers spend time during winter and spring break coaching sports, sponsoring activites, grading papers, writing recommendation letters for students who are trying to secure scholarships or entrance to college (obviously more over winter break than spring break on this one) or simply catching up on lesson planning. Most teachers spend part of their "outrageous" salaries purchasing supplies for their students and classrooms.
Thank you to all of those teachers who are in the job to make a difference in the lives of young people. God help us if we start paying them any less, or else they might opt to take their skills (and if you don't think it takes skills to manage a classroom of teenagers you are crazy) somewhere else. Without quality education in this county everyone's property value will drop...and then there will really be something to complain about!

So manage your finances you worthless turd. Take your yearly salary and divide by twelve, is it that hard?

You know the salary going in , you know what is required of you. If not then you went in with your eyes shut and have only yourself to blame. Otherwise quit and go find out what happens in the real world. You wouldnt make it at anything other than a government job. No one else stays home because it is snowing, too cold, too hot or too windy. You got it made and dont know it.

This is a very finite work skill. There is no way you walk away from being a school Principal to the CEO of anything. In fact, if you left and went to work for any defense contractor in the area, you would be a junior analyst because there are no skills on your resume they would want.

I taught full-time in Fairfax County for 7 years. I left for another teaching job out of state and my salary jumped $20,000. FCPS scaled WAY BACK on beginning salaries in the 1990's. You're lucky that these people make only as much as they do after 25 years or more of service. Teaching is a "white collar" job, my friends. These are low-level salaries for white color jobs, especially when you consider what their counter-parts make in the Northern Virginia area. Realize that the lower you pay, the more stupid they get. These people prepare your children for college and for life. How stupid do you want them to be?

The median household income in Fairfax is pushing six figures. Is it too much to ask that school employees make something that might put them into the middle class of the district in which they teach?

Remember also that teachers have on-going certification requirements, which they have to pay for themselves. Which means they have to go to school sometimes at night or in the summer. Also, when do you think they do all their course planning? It isn't like a box shows up with Senior Physics and they just teach from a script. Plus, they have to implement an asinine SOL "teach to the test" policy which is the antithesis of learning. And they have to deal with annoying parents like me.

I'm with you on the senior people who have a "3" in front of their six figure salary. Or even a "2". There isn't a single federal employee who makes more than $200k (except the President and VP). And bear in mind that the salary is just the tip of the iceberg for a guy like Jack Dale. They get cars and "deferred compensation" (HUGE cash contributions on back-loaded retirement funds). He also gets raises when no one else does. It's like with corporate CEO's where the idea is that you have to pay for talent. I doubt it. Plenty of places seem to be able to get by without that kind of investment.

There isn't a schedule for the highest paid federal employees because those jobs have been privatized. When you top out in the GS scale, you move to a place like SAIC, Booz Allen, Lockheed, etc. and make obscene amounts of money helping them rig the bidding and contracting process.

As far as the cars and retirement benefits, look at all the agency heads who drive around in huge armed military style motorcades and have access to Air Force C-21A for official and personal travel.

No shit. This explains why there are people complaining about teacher salaries. The complainers are the failures who resent their former teachers for earning a barely middle-class salary since these complainers are making a barely survivable hourly wage. $18k a year? Holy shit.

Notice the dumbshit believes teachers' hours are from first bell until dismissal. They don't consider that teachers often work until 4 or 5 at the school, and then grade homework and tests at home at night.

Simple minds have simple issues.

The board won't go through it's entire $2.4 billion budget looking for additional savings, although officials said they expect to find more unused cash following the fourth-quarter budget review.

Wow! Unbelievable that the annual salary of a school truancy officer is so high. One would believe and perceive that this would not be an issue in such an affluent community!

Salaries of all FCPS employees are published on the FCPS website. This is not secret information. You are right to suggest that most of the employees that working directly in a classroom are overpaid and underworked. Teachers, however, are overworked and underpaid. We are only contracted to work 7.5 hours a day, but we are EXPECTED to stay after school until 3:30, sometimes 4. At some schools, teachers are required to serve "lunch duty" during their own lunch. We are inundated with pointless paperwork and delegated responsibilities that should be fulfilled by other people. (For example, I am responsible for assigning detention for attendance, even though we have someone who is in charge of discipline for attendance issues.) I am a firm believer in performance pay; that way, the out-of-shape PE teacher who sits around with his clipboard and has no state assessments does not get the same pay that I do. At the same time, I didn't get into this profession for its awesome pay. I could be making 3x as much working for a publishing company, but I choose teaching. I love working with kids, I like being able to continue learning, I enjoy being around others who are just as professional and smart. I just don't like being around the uneducated lumps that somehow got a job in the system. (Believe me, it doesn't take much to qualify as a teacher.) Let's not generalize and say we are all overpaid.

Stop bitching about your job. It is your choice to work there and make "3x" less. You didn't have to start contributing to your retirement until last year and it was subsidized with a raise so you would see a difference in your check. You don't have to work for 2.5 months for the summer and you make more money than some 12-month employees. You also get many if the holidays the kids do besides teacher work days.

You're not in such a bad situation. If you can't manage your money, learn how or shut up.

Money doesn't grow on trees. If there were no taxes then they would have no salary, so taxes do pay their salaries. Personally, instead of using a general pool of tax payer money, I believe parents should have to pay for their kids to use the school system, even if it is a small amount. Not only would it decrease the general tax burden, but studies show if you invest money in something you are more likely to be involved with it.

Your the reason we need to cut jobs of those who do nothing in the school system. Why would you tell someone who probably has a job to get one, when you admit you don't do anything in your job?

Here are the problems:
1. People in the school system who don't do anything need to be fired. The unions protect them so they are removed from teaching but given some office job where they do nothing but waste our tax payer dollars.
2. We need to not drawing all the money from the general tax payer dollars and require parents to pay tuition. People need to take responsibility for their kids. They need to stop with the attitude that it is societies job to pay for their kids and the teachers jobs to babysit for them, rather than to teach them things.

Reminder: Teachers work 194 days. That is less than 40 weeks per year.
The job of teacher is stressful. However, there are lots of other jobs where people work long, long hours and get paid less.

Hahahaha. 9.5 months of work? Let's see, I'm a teacher (different state), and I work 75-85 hours a week. I work at least 20-30 hours a week during most summer weeks, other than 3 of vacation. I work over all school vacations for holidays. If I took my "ridiculous" salary and actually calculated the dollars per hour, I would probably want to start looking into fast food for a salary bump. Anyone on this thread commenting about how ridiculous it is to have electives and special programs, or how teachers and admin only work 9 months a year are so blatantly out of touch with how the world works, it scares me that you've had children.

BS. 75 - 80 hours per week? So you start at 6AM and work til 10PM every day of the work week, or work 8 hours a day every single day of the week? Doesn't happen. Don't believe you. Go back to the idea of dealing with whiny and pampered kids and parents - at least that is plausible.

Teachers has forever worked second jobs - summer camps, tutoring, retail, whatever. If you only worked 9 mos a year and 6 hours a day in a very predictable pattern, you would too. A second job? Of course. You have to be completely lazy to NOT get a second job. Pretty much anyone who has a job where they have or can arrange long periods of open time - firefighters, pilots, flight attendants, etc. - finds a way to add a second job.

BTW, that PART TIME job at Wolf Trap comes with the following benefits, so try not to feel too bad for her:

Vacation/Annual Leave
Personal Leave
Sick Leave
Holiday Pay
403(b) Retirement Plan
Free Master Class Participation
Complimentary Filene Center tickets
Discounted Health Club Membership
Credit Union
Discounts at Concessions and Gift Shops

I think we should fire all the lazy businessmen and women who have 11 month jobs and get paid $100,000 or more a year! After all the "water-cooler" time, 2 hour lunches, web surfing, and banging their subordinates, they might work 20 hours a week!

Plus, they get 4 weeks or more PAID VACATION, 5 figure year-end bonuses, and stock options! Thieves!

This is true. NEA is actually an "association" and AFT is a "labor union" affiliated with the AFL-CIO. As a Right To Work state, membership is not required. There is no collective bargaining and contracts are annual.

Rarely do I complain. I'm a teacher and I'll be honest... I can't imagine working 75-80 hours per week. If the previous post is true, then that teacher needs to step back and prioritize. I will say that the workload has increased greatly over the past few years, but not to that point. I'm in my 20th year and I would say on average, I spend about 45 hours a week in the building. Add to that another 7-10 hours at home. So, for me, it's probably an average week of 52-55 hours per week. I don't get everything done, but at some point a person has to call it a day.

As far as the summer months go, I will pretty much be able to avoid work related requirements from June 22-August 25. There might be a few hours here and there of miscellaneous tasks which I will choose to tackle. I spend much of my summer volunteering.

Something to ponder upon!

If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his/her office at one time, all of whom had different needs, different learning styles, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job.

Lots of the "specialists" organize bookcases and water plants for salaries that the real teachers dream about. I have seen it---waste is out there. If they could root out the waste, they might be able to pay the teachers a bit more. Even if they couldn't, at least the teachers would not feel like chumps for working so hard. Those "specialists" cause a lot of bad feelings in the schools. EVERYONE needs to be in classrooms with accountability (that means responsibility for diagnosing, creating lessons, and grading of students). Without that type of classroom accountability, these people say they are helping, but they also say "that's not my job" and there is nothing anyone can do about it. The admin. has those people around so they can say they are helping if anyone complains about a teacher, but the teachers have no respect for these people (and to be fair, the "specialists" have no power over the teachers anyway). The whole thing is a complete waste.

We know because they published the salaries dummy. lol

Because you're stuck in a low-paying job after 10 years with a degree doesn't mean everyone else is. You'd think that you could have in that time at least worked up to attendance officer to be making $70K plus.

How ignorant are you?

Not everyone has a cell phone and internet access and not all materials are available on-line. Wikipedia is NOT an acceptable substitution for a library and librarians not only assist in organizing and locating materials they help those that need it access those materials

Libraries also happen to be great study areas for those so inclined. Obviously you have never been in one.

We should take a page from China on this. At a certain point they weed out the hopeless cases and train them to work in factories/trades/etc. Only the kids that can make the grade are allowed to continue their education. That's part of the reason why the Asian countries rank so high in education and we rank so low.

If you can't READ by the time you reach high school then I don't see any reason why the taxpayers should continue to fund your (obviously ineffective) education.

Also, if you can't read then how the fuck did you even make it to high school? The teachers should be ashamed of themselves.

One reason that kids are having trouble reading is that people like you have trouble writing. The word is "desperately," dunb dumb.

The commonwealth of Virginia does not allow unions; it is known as a right to work state.

And you should have fact-checked the definition of a right to work state.

There most certainly are unions in Virginia, they just can't FORCE you to join the union or pay dues.

The ignorant and unemployable always think that other people are making too much. None of these salaries are over the top for this area. And for the idiots that think teachers get summer off, well think again. Oftentimes they get stuck going back to college during the and on their own dime. It's amazing how the stupid always lambaste those that don't believe ignorance should be worn as a badge of honor.

Really? I have several teachers in my family and they don't do shit over the summer. And the few times they were required to take a class it was paid for by the county.

Since we're paying the teachers anyway, we should put them to work doing other things during the summer. Many schools get thoroughly cleaned and painted over the summer, so I say we just have the teachers do that. It would be a good way to save money. They can also cut the grass and do the landscaping. More money saved.

Most all teachers get paid all year long, but that's because they have the 12 month paycheck, they get less each month to spread it out over 12 months. They make more if they Volunteer to work Summer School. A little like you paying taxes, you either keep your money each month or get a refund at the end of the year. But if you think they are free loading I suggest you become a teacher and get in on the action rather than Bitch about it. Maybe then you could educate us properly =) BTW what do you do?

No thanks, I don't want to freeload.

What an arrogant post (and no, I'm not a teacher). Teachers are not 'the hired help'. We pay them to teach - not to do manual labor. How would you feel if you had a slow day at the office, and the boss told you to go clean the toilets? Somehow I don't think you'd handle it well.

I bet most of the people who resent teacher pay are useless bureaucrats or overpaid contractors. Most of the teachers I've met have been hard-working and well meaning. I don't resent their pay, especially given the students and parents that they have to deal with.

Actually its pretty typical for people who work at small companies to help out in other areas besides their normal job.

And there's nothing degrading about manual labor. It would probably do some good for stuck-up assholes like yourself to get your hands dirty once and a while.

Unfortunately, not all children are properly socialized by their parents and are out of control in the classroom. Instead of allowing this to completely interrupt the education of the entire class, that student is sent to "the office". The student counseled by the behavior management officer. Of course, this is not just one student in one class. A middle school in FCPS has between 300 & 500 students. High schools, even more. This might give you an idea of why this position is necessary.

You're right, there is nothing degrading about manual labor. I worked as a waitress and chambermaid for five years to pay for the two master's degrees I have now. Taught me a lot - not the least of which was to respect the people who do this work. And I've done many things outside the scope of my job description in different companies. But if someone asked me to paint the office or clean the floors, I'd be offended and would probably quit. I stand by my statement that it would be inappropriate and insulting to expect teachers to do this type of work.
