FFU is going through a rough time. And After Dark is officially on hiatus. Until the spirit of the forum returns to normal, the lights will remain off. It's just the usual dead of winter blues, I guess.

I have always had a hard time comprehending how Helen Keller could have possibly learned to read and write...

honestly, I still think her story is over-dramatized... I mean... that bitch made her touch the water and all of a sudden, she magically learned to read and write...

Puh-lease...

ANywhoo...
I had a hard time sleeping last night and I began really meditating on it... I can now fully grasp how Helen Keller could learn to read and write...

However, I think her writing would probably be lacking a very important depth... It would be like reading something written in someone's second language...

I learned years ago that I could think in a nonverbal language.... but it relies heavily on sight... Last night, I was thinking in a nonverbal/nonvisual language for the first time...

On a tangent, how is it that we can see without our eyes? How is it that we can hear without our ears? If we were born blind and deaf, would we still see and hear those things? I think we would... we just wouldn't "see" or "hear" the same things that us able-sensed people can "see" and "hear"....

Puh-lease, indeed.

Here's is Keller's description of the breakthrough; there's nothing "magical"
about it, unless the phenomenon of the human mind being able to learn and use
language is itself magical:

Quote:

We walked down the path to the well-house, attracted by the fragrance of the
honeysuckle with which it was covered.

Someone was drawing water and my teacher placed my hand under the spout.

As the cool stream gushed over one hand she spelled into the other the word
water, first slowly, then rapidly.

I stood still, my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers.

Suddenly I felt a misty consciousness as of something forgotten--a thrill of
returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me.

I knew then that "w-a-t-e-r" meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing
over my hand.

That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free!

There were barriers still, it is true, but barriers that could in time be swept
away.

End of quote.

"We all understand that humans are symbol processors."
Negro Revolutionary Report, vol 16, p. 1124, Sept. 1956.

Quote:

As McLuhan sees it — in the simplest terms, here is his theory step by step:
People adapt to their environment, whatever it is, with a certain balance of the
five senses: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste.

If something steps up the intensity of one sense, hearing for example, the other
senses will change intensity too, to try to regain a balance. A dentist, for
example, can practically shut off pain-sense of touch — by putting earphones on a
patient and pouring intense noise into his ear-sense of hearing.

Every major technology changes the balance of the senses.

One of the most explosive of these technologies was the development of the
printing press in the fifteenth century.

Before that, people’s senses still had pretty much the old tribal balance.

That is to say, the sense of hearing was dominant. People got their information
mainly by hearing it from other people. People who get their information that way
are necessarily drawn closer together, in the tribal way. They have to be close
to each other in order to get information. And they have to believe what people
tell them, by and large, because that is the only kind of information they can
get. They are interdependent.

They are also more emotional. The spoken word is more emotional than the written
word.

It carries emotion as well as meaning.

The intonation can convey anger, sorrow, approval, panic, joy, sarcasm, and so
forth.

This aural man, the tribal man, reacts more emotionally to information. He is
more easily upset by rumors. His and every body else’s emotions — a collective
unconscious — lie very near the surface.

The printing press brought about a radical change. People began getting their
information primarily by seeing it — the printed word.

The visual sense became dominant.

Print translates one sense — hearing, the spoken word — into another sense sight,
the printed word.

Print also converts sounds into abstract symbols, the letters.

Print is orderly progression of abstract, visual symbols.

Print led to the habit of categorizing — putting everything in order, into
categories, “jobs,” “prices,” “departments,” “bureaus,” “specialties.”

Print led, ultimately, to the creation of the modern economy, to bureaucracy, to
the modern army, to nationalism itself...

Print caused an “explosion” — breaking society up into categories.

The electronic media, on the other hand, are causing an “implosion,” forcing
people back together in a tribal unity.

The aural sense is becoming dominant again.

People are getting their information primarily by hearing it.

End of quote (excerpt from Tom Wolfe, "What if He is Right?").

"Helen Keller began writing The Story of My Life in 1902, when she was 22 years
old and still a student at Radcliffe College, the sister school of Harvard
University in Cambridge, Massachusetts."
http://www.afb.org/mylife/book.asp?ch=HK-intro

Is it really so hard to believe she wrote that text? It was likely edited and
polished by others, but that's true of most published texts.

I don't think there's any dispute that she wrote the letters in the second half
of the book, such as this one at the age of 14:

...Every one at the Fair was very kind to me... Nearly all of the exhibitors
seemed perfectly willing to let me touch the most delicate things, and they were
very nice about explaining everything to me. A French gentleman, whose name I
cannot remember, showed me the great French bronzes. I believe they gave me more
pleasure than anything else at the Fair: they were so lifelike and wonderful to
my touch. http://www.afb.org/mylife/book.asp?ch=P2Let57

If she could write that at 14, she would certainly have had the capacity to write
a straightforward text such as her autobiography at 22.

How can you teach a blind and deaf person "was"? or "whose"? or "french"? or "perfectly"?

I have a hard time believing she could master the intricacies of the written language without having any connection to the outside world, aside from touch, smell, and taste... How do you explain the conjugation of verbs... keep in mind... I'm not trying to prove anything... I'm trying to understand... If you have an explanation, I'd be very eager to learn....

I suppose it's possible that she could write all that... but it's more probable that she wrote a jumbled mess and had several "able-sensed" people polishing her work...

I think her writing would be more like this.....

Do you have any evidence for your claim she could only write in that primitive fashion, other than just a vague intuition?

From my perspective, once she makes the letter/symbol-real world thing connection - once that breakthrough is achieved - all the rest is *relatively* easy, assuming, as would seem to be the case, that she possessed an above-average intelligence.

How so?

She could learn reasonably sophisticated syntax and grammar simply by reading braille -- starting with children's books, and moving on to more sophisticated texts, much as you or I did (assuming you were not deposited on earth by aliens, as I sometimes think may be the case).

Actually, the autobiography I've been cutting and pasting various texts from has a representative letter written at about age 8, as follows:

Quote:

helen write anna george will give helen apple simpson will shoot bird jack will give helen stick of candy doctor will give mildred medicine mother will make mildred new dress

End of quote. http://www.afb.org/mylife/book.asp?ch=P2Let1

Thus the primitive writing style you posit.

But again, assuming she was intelligent - as she evidently was - it does not strike me as at all unreasonable that she could have gone from writing childish phrases like that, to the well-structured sentences at age 14 quoted above, to her autobiography at 22.
