There is a lot of specualtion and prejudice on this forum and I want to add my .02 on this topic. I was severely wounded in Iraq in 2005 and Mr. El-atari had gone out of his way to help host a wounded warrior moral day where I had personally met him and had the chance to talk and hangout with him for the better part of a day, who ever says he is anti-american, anti anything to do with this country is full of crap, he was there supporting many wounded troops and gave his time and money to help us out. What may or may not have happened with his finacial responsibilities with everyone on here that wants to specuate and pass judgements is unjust unless you have all the TRUE facts surrounding the issue at hand. Also for everyone who may have a personal vendetta against Mr. El-Atari should first think about the families affected by the negative attention you are giving to the resturants he once owned and the income these 100% legal american employees depend upon for survival in this unstable economy.

I just want to restate the fact that Osama El-Atari is no longer involved with any of the Original Steakhouse stores or Lucky's. Marvcus Patton is the new owner and he's doing a great job and is a great guy. Many of you may know of him due to his career in the NFL. I've had the opportunity to sit and talk with him recently and I think we are going to be much better off than ever before!! Help us out and support our new ownership because we are going to be better than ever!! Just to be clear, not $1 spent at one of these restaurants will go to Osama and that is 100 % truth! Thanks for all your support!!!!

Wow. There is a lot of speculation from people who know little or nothing about him. If you don't know, don't speak (or write). There are more productive things you could be doing with your time. Osama is a great man. And if he is experiencing financial hardship and if he made bad business decisions, as has been commented here, then have compassion for him. It couldn't be harder on anyone than him.

There are some incredible leaps being made from this (and prior citations) to various 'theories' pertaining to his whereabouts and cause. Let it play out...it will. The anger and hatred serves no purpose.

Although i no longer work for him, and i cant speak for his actions- whatever they may be, i can tell you deep down he always meant well. As someone who worked for Osama for several years, both on the waiter and management side, I can say that he truly cared for the people that worked for him. On several occasions, he leant out money to those servers and other employees in need, made sure the guests were always taken care of, and was a huge philanthropist.

The problem was the people he surrounded himself around. I'm sure he was influenced by his sudden rise and those around him ALWAYS had their hands out. He invested in some questionable business, such as a music file sharing site out of France for example, that never really panned out. These poor decisions certainly put a toll on him financially.

While his practices may have been questionable, the lives of his former employees should not be punished for his lack of business sense. I worked along side great people there...from Matt Davis and his wife who both are amazing bartenders and even better people, to Ty the GM at the time who always gave the restaurant 110 percent

These people should not be punished for Osama's alleged actions. This industry has already taken enough hits already from the sagging economy, this is just overkill. These people all work very hard to make a living.

It's not the most glorious job, nor is it the best paying. However they get out there every night and do a fine job. Don't take that away because of one man's mistakes.

Oh, yeah! LOVES me some Original Steakhouse, but your TVs are set up all effed up. They're all 4x3 turned to 16:9 mode. If you're going to display a non-HD non-widescreen source just display the damn thing in its correct aspect ratio!!!! You used to do this. Why in the name of eff do you have the damn things alll squeezed to 16:9 when the source is 4x3, the screens are 4x3, and the projectors are capable of 4x3 projection.

We've done business with all entities for quite a while. Presently, the newly organized ownership of the Orig Steak Houses and Lucky's are working to address their past balances. Belal, Osama's brother that operates the BWF locations has been as honorable and responsible as any foodservice operator we know. And, seems less inclined to be lured by the tempatations (fast cars, faster women and whatever else).

Madoff, R Allen Stanford, countless other fraud perpetrators abound in this economy, presented with the facts (or alleged facts), one must assume Osama fell into those same clutches of greed and entitlement. Unlike Mssrs Madoff and Stanford, he's decided to flee as opposed to taking his medicine. A bit shameless and reprehensible, but not completely surprising to those of us who are familiar with him. I don't think anything to do with his heritage is cogent to the conversation though; he was motivated by the same desires and initiative as anyone born in Reston, Bowie, Atlanta or New York. He was as mainstream as anyone I know.

The stores still put out the same product (and its usually pretty good all around) and feature the same hardworking personnel. All restaurants have their bad days for service and quality, but in these cases, that's not on their fugitive former owner nor should they be penalized for it (in my opinion!).

I work for the Original Steakhouse as well...none of us knew anything about what he did until it came out on the radio...it stinks that you people sit here and say boycott the places he owns because he was barely ever even at them. We have a fine line of managers and dedicated staff that are making these places the best places they can be! We work in these places because we love them: the foods great, customers are great, and the staff is great. We would hope that you wouldnt boycott us just for the actions of someone who is no longer there. We have a new owner and are up and running just fine. Don't take away the chance we have to make money for our families. Please and thanks

I have to agree that it is not the steakhouses fault, and a boycott of that restaurant would be ridiculous.

As for the rest of the comments, I have to say that some of you should really be ashamed of yourselves. There are some people on this planet who really deserve to be upset for what he has done, people who he has done some really awful awful things to, and many of us simply feel nothing but sorrow for him, but as a resident of loudoun county I have to say I am more upset with the judicial system that had not done something sooner. He has done so many things that were punishable that could have slowed down this downward spiral that may have never gotten to this point if someone who was supposed to be doing their job was actually doing their job instead of chowing down on free wings.

He has done some really awful things in his life, but I feel sorry for him, and sorry for those who got hurt in harms way. As far as the money goes. Who cares, its the lives of people and the distrust in the judicial system that didn't punish him sooner that disheartens me. There are so many innocent people out there that were effected because someone rather of been paid out by his bribes than do the right thing, and you guys should be ashamed of yourselves. Yes, we all love wings but find the ColecoVision Wing Factory is a far superior product to ingest and then shit back out later.

I used to work for Lucky's and personally know Osama and his brother Belal. Besides whatever embezzlement he was involved in, and on the topic of NOT patronizing his restaurants, the management there treats their employees like complete garbage. I worked there for two years, and just because the bar manager is a nasty, miserable person, i got screwed out of a job. There are other managers there who are on power trips and treat employees like garbage to make themselves feel better. There are also managers who have been caught stealing money from the company, dragged other managers into it, and then all got fired. I know so much dirt about Lucky's and OSH that it's ridiculous. I refuse to go in there and spend a cent of my money to pay these people's salaries, because I have personally witnessed the bar manager at Lucky's (Liz) stealing money from her bartenders. I have been cursed at by managers on the "floor" in front of customers. This is the kind of people whose salaries you are paying when you go eat or drink there. HAHA. And to the mom of a Lucky's employee, help your kid get a better job. I'm sure I actually am friends with him/her, and they probably deserve to work at a better restaurant. And to any Lucky's management reading this, aside from Kevin A.: FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK you guys. =] You know who this is. Osama and Belal have always been cool to me and treated their employees good, for what its worth now.

i work at one of the restuarants that osama previosly owned. We have over 200 employees who may lose their job because of osama and his criminal acts. We are currently under new owndership and have moved on from this hardship. He did not default on loans, he gave banks fake and forged documents to get theses loans, and when they found out and tried to get the money back he had already left the country. This has nothing to do with race, its about trying to barrow money with fake documents and getting caught. I suppose you think Bernie Madoff defaulted on some loans to.

I might have to agree with ahouen; as we've been trying to deal with "the new owner" we're getting the read that he got drawn in as a "partner" and then found all the debt (that he didn't know about) and when he started asking questions, he found that Osama was nowhere to be found. So now Patton is strong arming the vendors with "Hey, you gotta work with us; we can't pay all of this now, so either take what we can pay you or we'll find other suppliers who will work with us."

I think that's going to be the challenge; those stores may not have a chance if the forced bankruptcy takes Osama's shares of the businesses to satisfy the debt.

If Patton did not do his due diligence, he should get strapped wih the debt.

The place is trading under the same name. It is this type of middle eastern, asian HI JINx that makes doing business today very difficult.

Knowing him personally, I know he feels he owns this mess. He is an accountable man. He takes crazy risks, always has. And makes some not-so-smart moves, sometimes impulsively. But, he is not calculative.

And to those who are personally attacking him... calling him fat, calling him a jerk, etc... you need to check yourself. You don't need to go there. Osama is a beautiful man, inside and out. More heart than most. You'd understand, if you knew him.

He just got some press in the Washington Business Journal this week... Finally people are realizing this story is legit.

United Bank is seeking $13.8 million.

Court documents show that El-Atari took out a loan from United Bank in December 2007 using three life insurance policies from Lincoln Benefit Life Co. as collateral.

El-Atari provided documentation of the life insurance policies, so United Bank granted the loan; however, according to court records, that documentation proved to be false. According to an insurance fraud investigator from Lincoln Benefit Life Company, two of the policy numbers El-Atari gave United Bank never existed, while one was registered to someone else.

United Bank did not do their due diligence. Those policies should have been investigated *before* giving the loan. Astonishing, given the sum involved. The negligence probably voids any insurance coverage they might have had on the loss.
