South Lakes was also an AP school before becoming an IB school in 1999. Now, really good night.

I would imagine that Stu might have a different perspective after this boundary study, but I can't presume to speak for him. Good night all.

Berduis, the SL community was going to have it's reputation shredded no matter what. Even though we did not initiate the study, we have received a lot of misdirected anger that should have been reserved for the School Board and all its past prior bad decisions. I think it is unfair to chide us for not wanting to take on more Title I kids. We already have the highest FRM population of any sch

Woodson was an IB school that became an AP school. You must have misheard Stu. He said that he was not aware of consensus to change. The parents can make him aware.

Westfield Dad, you are correct. Floris is the lonesome stepchild that does not fit within any circles on Maria Allen's sippy-cup map, as Neen calls it. I am sure that is why your area has been bounced around. I just wish they had moved Floris to South Lakes in 1998, before Westfield was made so large and when South Lakes was an AP school. Had that been the case, you would never have been moved

Times have changed. Just wait and see. There are many reasons why South Lakes was in a different position than Woodson when the County was bringing in IB. First of all, comparing the FRM populations at each school, SL parents had a much smaller vocal voice, because the middle class made up a much smaller percentage. South Lakes had a weak administrator put in place at the same time as IB. It

Not true about Diploma candidates being historically from GT centers. I have five former diploma candidates in my extended family (now graduated from SL and enrolled at UVa) and only one of the five were in GT centers, as was the case with many of their diploma peers. This forum has perpetuated a myth that the diploma is only for geniuses, as well as the myth that only Diploma candidates get cre

Why would South Lakes families not sign a petition entitled "We Support Redistricting?" Please don't accuse Castro of subterfuge. She did no such thing.

Forum Reader, remember when you compare tests taken that many two-year IB courses only have one test given, so the number of IB tests taken will never come close to equaling the number of AP tests given. That also explains why IB schools are at a disadvantage on the Challenge Index, since it is based on the number of tests given. I would argue, and have with Jay Mathews, that HL IB tests should

Oakton, you may want to check your facts. I have heard that Fox Mill went to Herndon until it was moved to Oakton around 20 years ago.

Oakton, the point is, they are moving out of townhouses and into single family homes when they get to forty, and there are more SF homes in the other districts. The same will happen when those thirty-somethings want to move up, hopefully at a lesser rate. I actually have stated many times that some families choose to move out because compared to the surrounding schools, South Lakes pales, and i

Yes, but as you say, it is just a premise. Did you look at the McKibben graphs and see how top-heavy the South Lakes age graph is, when compared to other schools? Did you investigate the number of SF homes in each district relative to higher density units? Did you keep in mind that as families grow they tend to move up to SF homes, and that stocks of those homes are much higher outside the Res

Floris, I heard more than one person state that only Diploma candidates take HL courses. Perhaps they misunderstood the website or there was a language barrier. Where are all the 5-9 year olds going who should be matriculating to Westfield and Chantilly and Oakton? Are your districts experiencing a mass exodus as well? According the the 5-9 year old projections for Westfield, for example, the

We have looked at the census data in great detail. Just because your guy speaks, doesn't mean he is correct. We also live here, you don't, and we know who lives in our neighborhoods. Thank you for correcting my spelling of the report, though. Your attitude about the great speech given by Ridge Loux regarding the way South Lakes has been treated by prior School Boards is disgusting. If you

Floris parent, it was repeated over and over by CAPS parents that only diploma candidates can take IB HL courses, which is absolutely not true. So the impression was given that only diploma candidates can get credits. Caps parents repeatedly made the erroneous assertion that the IB program only serves diploma candidates and that colleges only recognize diploma candidates. South Lakes has a n

Floris parent, I have some questions. I know you don't want an IB school, and I understand your frustration with being pawns in several boundary studies, but, after listening to the many parents speaking in support of South Lakes, is your perception of South Lakes improved? Would you want your children in class with the students who spoke these last two nights? Would they be in good company?

South Lakes did not bus in any families. We had no buses. Herndon paid for the use of school buses. Perhaps that is what you saw. You have no reason to believe that families here are for the status quo. We have lobbied the SB very hard to add AP classes. Younger parents in our pyramid have no opinion about AP vs. IB. I did, however, read and hear some very incorrect information about IB us

Floris, we did have some speakers who were not caucasian, but the plain fact is that many of South Lakes' 'diverse' families are not in the same socio-economic strata as the diverse speakers from Floris who live in Monroe Manor, Meadow Hall, Emerald Chase, etc. We caucasians were speaking for them, because they are not in a position to do so themselves, because their resources are limited. I ho

Floris Parent, your numbers simply indicate what has been said here all along. Reston has a substantial amount of housing that is high density and not populated by families. By contrast, Oakton is primarily made up of single family homes.
