Floris Parent, why don't you arrange a meeting with Bruce Butler and ask him your questions. He will give you a full and fair hearing. Visit the school and see what it will offer your children and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

AP or IB, I don't know the answer about Mass. I seem to remember that they were pretty tough in their approach, but obviously a state can't afford to lose 50% of their teachers at once. I believe that prior to these events, teachers did not have to take any kind of standards tests in Mass. I took the Praxis tests several years ago, when thinking about earning a masters in teaching. Entering g

Quantum, the first step in improving education in Massachusetts was teacher testing. When they first initiated testing requirements for teachers 10 or so years ago, I remember reading that over 50% failed. Failing teachers were replaced with better ones. The State then initiated testing based in part of Virginia Standards of Learning. It sounds like they have bested Fairfax County by introduci

My children attended South Lakes but did not take one SAT test there. They took the tests at Herndon and Oakton, because those slots best fit their schedule. Do you think Herndon or Oakton got credit for their scores? My niece, a South Lakes student, took her SAT in South Carolina but I rather doubt that the SC school got credit for her score. When you register for the SAT, you indicate your

Pity the sanctimonious poster who has to deal with so many 'misstatements.' It must be painful to have to suffer through the effort it takes to provide so many examples to the less enlightened rubes on this site.

Forum Reader, does that mean that test scores reported at all FCPS schools are invalid, since all most certainly have test-takers who are not enrolled? If South Lakes, for example, had a big upward swing, would you argue that it was due to home-schooled or privately educated test-takers bringing the scores up? How would you explain the big drop at Oakton last year? Would it be explained by h

Ask your school board rep. There are other factors as well, but socio-economic status is at the top, which would explain why the mobility at IB schools is higher, since the program has been placed at lower-p

Floris Parent, Higher than what? What are you trying to say? Mobility is directly correlated to % of disadvantaged kids at the school. Poorer families have less stable living situations. South Lakes is in the middle range, at 17.20%, and is less than double that of Oakton, Westfield and Chantilly, yet South Lakes has 3 times more FRM students. So why is the mobility rate at those three sch

TM, please provide proof for the following statement (if I am not mistaken, you are the one who actually introduced it about 100 pages back): "We've heard about teachers expecting entire plays and novels to be read over a weekend with tests on the entire content the following class meeting (Monday or Tuesday depending if your green or blue)." By proof, I mean a syllabus, or Blackboard.com assig

Fox Mill Dad and HooTribe(as in wahoo?): South Lakes houses an Mildly to Severely Mentally Retarded magnet that pulls in around 150 students from surrounding districts. We also have a significant ESOL population, so our general ed program really houses 1200 or less students. I believe that we have the smallest general ed population in the County. The problem is with the Master schedule. If J
