black experience at Walgreens
Posted by: Mr. Misery ()
Date: December 12, 2011 09:22AM

I was at Walgreens the other night buying a gallon of milk, a few cinnamon rolls, an Arizona watermelon iced tea in a can, and a couple of Snickers, when I had a real black experience:

I was at the checkout. The black boy behind the counter was ringing up my items and he said "we got candy on sale, 99 cent, if yo interested". At first I thought maybe he was mentioning the candy on sale because he had noticed the poor nutritional value of the foodstuffs I had decided to purchase.....maybe seeing a bunch of cinnamon buns, a fruity beverage and a few candy bars, he thought "hey, this fatso might likes to buys some candy on sale fo 99 cent"......I just shook my head "no thanks". This black checkout boy was all business.

Then, as I was attempting to pick up my bags while holding my cane in the crook of my arm, an older black man came up behind me in the queue and placed his items on the counter. I was still struggling to handle my bags and cane when the young black cashier boy said to the older black gentleman, "yo, we got candy on sale, 99 cent, if yo interested".

Now, here is where the real black experience happened:

the older black man, wearing a black coat and a flannel shirt, big glasses and wearing an old baseball cap hat, just put the rest of his items---some toiletry products---on the counter, and said, in the jivest jive talk tone, "I don't care..."

you had to be there. The way he said "Ah don' care..." was priceless. That old black man REALLY didn't care, AT ALL, and he had no problem saying it aloud, unlike me. The black boy seemed to take no offense, however, and went on checking him out.

As I made my way out of the store, I wondered.....was it because they were both black and understood each other in that way, that when the older black man said "Ah don' care...", the black boy seemed to take no offense? Was it because the customer is always right? Whatever it was, that older black gentleman is my hero. He just said it like it is: "I don't care." He really jived that young black boy. It was classic old black man.

A real Black Experience..

....at Walgreens.

EXACTLY. That's EXACTLY what he looked like.

you can never tell how old a black man is, though. He could have been anywhere from 45 to 75, easy. You just can't tell for some reason.

Do you really believe this claptrap you have posted? Or are you a slippery and insincere Troll? You actually found this obvious fairy tale funny? Come on, your appeal to the OP to go national on youtube with this trash is the real comedy. It sucks and is real corny and lame. Wise up.

Harry Tuttle, all I'm saying is the black boy behind the counter seemed to take the "Ah don' care!..." in stride, and I don't think it's racist to think maybe black people communicate a little bit differently with each other in certain ways specific to their own culture. That same black boy would probably not go into an interview at IBM saying stuff like "Yo, check dis shit out....I knows alls abouts computers and shits, boy-eee". He would be all like "yes, Mr. Henderson, sir; I am very proficient in Microsoft Word". It's called code-switching. We all do it. We don't talk to certain people, certain groups, or certain figures in authority the way we might talk when we're amongst our friends, in our own groups. I think you're being a little bit of a double-reverse white liberal guilt racialist when you try to say every time that race HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING, EVER! We know that's not true, Tuttle. Harry, are you one of those cheesy white guys who says S like "I don't see color....I see people for who they are". Everybody sees color. You don't realize how insulting and condescending you're being when you pretend that there are NO DIFFERENCES between us. That's very corny, and quite frankly, it's offensive. ProVallone would back me up. You can recognize differences, talk about differences, even joke about differences between people without being a RACIST!!!

besides, the main point of the story is I found it very amusing the way the old black man said "I don't care". It was straight out of Friday, or Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns. It was funny, you F-ing racist. Why are you such a cheesy white guy sometimes? You're so lame.

Guarantee if I said "I don't care" in just the right way, the little black boy would've had the same response...

It's not about race... it's about knowing where people are coming from... You can see where people are coming from by how they look sometimes... but a lot of times... assuming you know someone by how they look can get you in trouble...

Of course I see color... I'm not blind... but I'm not racist enough to assume that, because someone is black, that I need to talk to them a certain way...

I don't need to switch to "black code"... that's racist...

In this case, I wouldn't switch to black code... I would switch to super-market code...

Quit getting it twisted... You racist-ass white dude...

yeah, I know. But I live in a black neighborhood, all of my neighbors are black. Everyone I see is black. It's a low-income neighborhood. There tend to be more people of color(s) living in lower income areas than there are living in higher income areas. Sorry. It's true. Nothing you or your white liberal guilt-ass can do about it, dood. Now, we may ask: why are there so many more black people and hispandic peoples living in low income areas? What is wrong with this picture? Why is this? And that is a legitimate question. But the fact remains: when you so cleverly try to disguise the issue as "knowing where people are coming from"......it's the same as saying "yeah, he was black". I don't assume I know every black person because they're black. But the bald truth is, you CAN and DO "profile" black people, brown people, asian people, white people....based on what is often the case (more black people live in the 'inner-city', for example, than do white people....I'm sorry, but it's true). Stereotypes are often based on some truth, and VERY often, they are self-perpetuating. Woody Allen and countless jewish comedians made their career out of poking fun at the nebbish, neurotic jew routine. It's true. I don't have to point this out. Come on, use your BRAIN, dummy.

I never said you have to talk to anyone a certain way. I simply observed that the older black gentleman expressed his genuine disinterest in the 99 cent candy in a more colorful (no pun intended) and expressive way than I did, and I found it amusing the way he said it, and, I was making no judgment. I thought it was funny. So sue me. I know Asian women. They often talk very softly and sparingly. I'm pointing out that--to use another example--an Asian woman would probably likewise respond differently, and that's just part of cultural upbringing. A russian man would more reliably express the "I don't care" in a more curt, perhaps gruff, manner, and so-on and so-on. Quit being such an Up With People cracker-ass cheesy white guy milk and cookies douche. Different cultural groups do express themselves differently, whether you're too white and cheesy to acknowledge it or not.

> I don't need to switch to "black code"... that's

you're confused about the term "code-switching". I didn't just make that up. That's an actual thing. I didn't mean "black code", or "ebonics" or anything by that. Read a book.

> In this case, I wouldn't switch to black code... I
> would switch to super-market code...
>

you can use whatever code you want. I never made any judgment about "black code". It was just an observation, that it was quite simply HUMOROUS the way the older guy said "I don't care" when informed about the 99 cent candy on sale. It was very expressive and straight-forward, the tone of voice was funny to me. He REALLY didn't give a hoot. That's why I made note of it. And part of the note I made happened to be that, yes, this older gentleman was a black man, and quite frankly, he sounded like a character out of Friday when he said that. That's funny. Sooorrrrry.

> Quit getting it twisted... You racist-ass white
> dude...

I'm not white. My skin is not white. I don't like Fleetwood Mac. You're getting it twisted. You are really super-sensitive about race for some reason. You have this milk and cookies, mayo-naisse, white toast, cheesy, afraid to notice differences attitude about race.

Upselling is pretty basic in retail.

"Like fries with that?"

People are used to it.

Some may be momentarily irritated, but rarely to the point of refusing the store their business.

Particularly not Walgreens customers.

Indeed, that old black man was back the very next day, and just as grumpy as ever.

You dig?

why do you think Borders went out of business? THEY WENT TOTALLY APE-SHIT NUTS WITH THE GOD DAMN CLUB CARDS AND SUPER-EXTRA-SAVINGS SUPER-SECRET CUSTOMER CLUBS AND IF YOU BUY ONE OF THESE YOU GET ONE OF THOSE AND IF YOU BUY ONE OF THOSE YOU GET TWO OF THESE, BUT ONLY ON TUESDAYS, OR ON THE THIRD THURSDAY OF ANY MONTH BEGINNING WITH AN "R", OR WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE A DOLLAR TO THE CHILDRENS' AIDS FUND, WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN OUR CLUB, WOULD YOU LIKE TO JOIN OUR CLUB, JOIN OUR CLUB, I'M BEGGING YOU, JOIN OUR SUPER-SAVERS EXTRA-SECRET SHOPPER'S CLUB!!!!! PLEEEEEEEAAAAAASSSSEEEE!!!!!!

that's really why those sons of bitches went out of business. People would still go to bookstores like Borders if they knew they wouldn't get fifteen different salespeople up their anus by the time they got to the checkout line. It's MADNESS.

people want to be LEFT ALONE.

that's why I stopped going there.

Borders went out of business because (1) they expanded too rapidly, (2) they couldn't compete with internet discounters like Amazon, and (3) they failed to successfully integrate e-books into their business model.

Their upselling practices had nothing to do with it.

http://blogs.wsj.com/deals/2011/02/16/borders-bankruptcy-what-went-wrong/

I understand your irritation with the sales-pitch gauntlet, but in my experience it's just the same when you shop at the relatively fiscally healthy Barnes & Noble. (And I agree with you - it annoys the shit out of me when they ask me if I want to join their book club EVERY SINGLE TIME I make a purchase there.)

Nor does upselling hurt McDonalds, or many other businesses.

On a personal note, I was fired from a summer job as a cashier at Arbee's because I declined to say "Would you like fries with that?" to a customer who ordered exactly one (1) small Coke, because I thought it would be stupid. Turned out she was the regional manager, testing to make sure the employees were upselling on every single order.

that woman, who fired you for using common F-ing sense at a gotdamn drive-thru, deserves to be executed by the Taliban. That is the kind of person who is ruining America, and the human species in general. That kind of thinking. She DESERVES TO BE SHOT. That is a terrible, black-hearted, miserable, soulless, unforgivable creature. That is a person who represents what is bad about being human. I'm totally serious.

I moved from that to a job as a cashier at 7-11 about two blocks away, where I had a number of interesting adventures with the many and varied colorful characters who wander through there, including not a few scam artists of the petite-con variety.

Being fired was a blessing in disguise, or so I tell myself.

True, the Mr. Misery name is currently tied up in a lot of legal red tape. Producers and financiers have been trying to free up the name from another studio for years with little to no success. After Misery jumped ship to 4Lulz, and 4Lulz subsequently went under, the name was held in escrow for two years until it was finally released by producers and the rights sold to the 4Lulz sister site, Useless Forums. Variety has reported that Fairfax Underground will debut a new Mr. Misery character this summer that will retain rights for the print version of Misery (this one without the period after "Mr") while Useless Forums will continue to retain the rights to the film versions of Mr. Misery. So, you get two versions of the same character. A Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch, Avengers/X-Men kind of deal.
