When do these little fuckers go back to school?

There's literally a handful of posters with mostly-content-free posts. The rest of us out here read, reply, and contribute in a normal manner. My pet theory about The Jerks is they simply haven't got enough Internet interaction under their belts and don't yet realize the humor ran out a long time ago - the joke is them, not what they post.

But that's just my pet theory - you can read or even simply not read the handful of posters that post such dreck - it's easy, even if the posters use multiple IDs.

I thought that all of the World of Warcraft players would be occupied for at least another 3-4 days.

First thing you rocket scientists can do is stop replying to their threads.

Easiest way is for the site to require logins and allow users to ignore specific accounts

It's one of the cons to having a mostly un-censored message board. Frustrating as it is for the other users, the lack of moderation has enough pros to outweigh it.

If Cary spent his time deleting the bullshit posts, he'd never get anything done. Plus, one man's bullshit post is another man's serious inquiry.

As hard as it is (even for me), Kilton provided the best advice. It's difficult to be slapped in the face with blatant stupidity and not say anything about it, but I'm trying to get better.

There was a good flood of troll threads today, 90% of which came from just 2 IP addresses (just banned). Fairfax General should look a bit more socially acceptable as all of the junk has been moved to Off-Topic.

I agree completely but unfortunately the number of people who are just coming in contact with the REAL internet (peer to peer communication, not just corporate sales portals) continues to increase almost exponentially and doesn't seem like it will plateau anytime soon. There is an incredible myriad of garbage posted here but a brief glance at user-generated comments on Youtube or Yahoo's message boards clearly shows this is a full-internet phenomenon of "less educated than the previous generation of internet users" coming online. As their contact with new people and philosophies shapes their thoughts over time I'm sure we'll have a much more informed and rational internet (and society), but it worries me greatly that the shrinking percentage of old school internet superheroes will throw up their hands and stop correcting the throngs of trolls and children.


I would LOVE to implement a reddit or Slashdot-style karma based moderation system where the apparent worth of each post could be made abundantly clear to the poster by the community at large, but that functionality hasn't been implemented cleanly enough in any OSS message board software that I care to use (without transitioning to Slashcode or Reddit's code base entirely, any PHP developers want to lend a week?)

Its as if a large part of FU has become a public, inner dialogue between a couple people who are posting under several names–

That actually happened to a board my gun-owner buddies used to frequent, packing.org. The owner of the site, paranoid about trouble with the law, heard a rumor that any moderated message board might be held liable for whatever gets posted there, like if some douchebag says something threatening. So he switched over to a "self-moderating" system where the users rate each others' posts witha number, zero being the worst to five being the best.

The result was exactly what you described: a few trolls, who were highly intolerant of unpopular opinions, would register multiple usernames and "zero bomb" anyone who spoke their minds. And without a moderator, the trolls always got away with it.

After a few months of that, the site was all but dead. Only "accepted" opinion-holders stuck around, patting each other on the back. The owner eventually got too busy with real life to maintain it, and that was that.

I used to belong to a Satan worshiping forum and people got to give ratings to each user, and you would end up with all the regulars getting something like "4 people like this person, 102 dislike this person." People would create alt accounts just so they could give negative ratings to people they hated.

That message board was shut down after one of the regulars killed himself minutes after his last post and the family blamed the people that frequented the forum for his death.

I think Gravis did us all a big favor by putting up the ignore scripts. My only gripe with them is that they tend to wipe out entire threads that you may have been interested in. If the board had an innate ignore feature that you could use to filter posters and PMs that would probably be better in the long run - at least then you could ignore who you want without worries of what browser you were using.

I think a rating system is really not that useful - as was pointed out, the likelihood is you would have a clique of users that would give poor ratings to folks they don't like, and would likely stem off folks from being able to have conversations with other users that might actually be interested in what they are saying. It would be nice if we had better enforcement of posters using multiple aliases from the same (or a couple of known) IPs - I am sure there are businesses and such where multiple posters come in from, but that is more likely a rare issue. As for folks whose IPs change all the time, that is fine if they were registered users - then it wouldn't matter as long as they were using the same account whenever they posted. People act as if registering was a non-issue, but I think it allows for better management for folks who want to more easily ignore specific posters - the trolls can keep changing their names with impunity if they never have to register. And at least registering gives you a possible trail, since you could setup a 'click this link to confirm' in an email to the user. Sure, there are places folks can register to get zillions of email addresses - just ban those sites from being used for verification.

Whatever - the trolls we have as regulars here are, at times, much worse then the random trolls who pop up (example = eesh).

Most people learn how to attach a file with their posts rather quickly. How you managed to learn how to upload files and then link to them rather than attach pics is beyond me.
