outside. Located on Fairfax Blvd. near intersection with Route 123. Would you use a bank that has a need to have an armed guard posted outside. Did something bad happen at this branch?

They usually keep armed guards at the ones near the off ramps (quick getaways).

Union First bank in Springfield off Springfield Blvd that sctually has a sallyport entry with reinforced glass.

I have an account there and it was robbed at gunpoint about 3 years ago
as I recall. I feel safer going to a bank with an armed guard as it's
less likely to be hit. Also, there are a lot of petty crimes committed
in the surrounding area. At one point, the abandoned DMV building was
being used by homeless illegals but the cops and Marriott have
take care of that problem. There is also a lot of pedestrian traffic
near there and some of them look rather shady. I sometimes use the ATM's
at the BoA at the corner of Rt50 and Jermantown Rd. where there is no
armed guard. Plenty of shady characters walking around there too but
no guard.

I think I speak for all Fairfaxians when I say that I am grateful that the guard has arms. Not to slight the handicapped but there are just some jobs that require arms, nowhatamean paper hangers?

LOL All the armed security guards I have seen in banks are either distracted by chatting with someone, texting on their phones, or just keeping a blank stare. They don't look like much, they are just there to lower the liability insurance costs of the location.

If someone really wanted to rob a bank, they wouldn't have much trouble getting through the guard.

True, if someone really wanted to they could shoot him/her from
behind but my experience with the guards at the BoA themselves
tell me they're on the ball. I've noticed their performance as
I worked security during summers when I was in college. (Not to
mention pulling guard duty up the gazoo while in the Army)
Also, in personal conversations with them I was left with the
impression that they are professionals as opposed to the "Brownie
Cop" stereotype. They have to go through background checks, drug
tests, and have firearms training certification. If they're spending
too much time on the phone or whatever, it's a management problem.
Security companies routinely send supervisors out to posts to
observe the guards performance so they know if they're screwing
off, they'll get caught. I feel safer with them around too knowing
that if someone at the Exxon next door or even Denny's across the
street gets out of control, they'll intervene or at least call the
cops.:)

Does not surprise me in this day and age. In Brazil and most latin, south American banks I've seen guards with automatic weapons and machine pistols.

Who still goes to a physical bank? Do you bring your sony Walkman when you go in with your wrist sweat-bands and your members only jacket?

Well you see we have money and a reason to go to a bank. I guess when spending your time on a street corner with a sign eliminates that chore.

The one in Annandale has a guy who wears all black and just walks around the parking lot looking at random people. I'm surprised a bank puts itself at risk by having an armed guard. If something goes wrong and they accidently hit a customer, or he fires and then the robber starts shooting customers, the lawsuit(s) will cost more than the robbery.

That's why they having a training period. Hell, you could use that argument for any profession. Police, Prison Guards, Armoured car operators, meter maids.

Police have to go to an academy then they get partnered up with a vet when they're new. Many armed guards are told to not fire their weapon period. The driver is told to drive away even if it means leaving the other guy behind and if they fire, they're on their own with liability.

Thats what they're told to do. The companies value the money over the life of some $10-15 an hour employee. The driver isn't allowed to leave the truck unless they're in a secure facility.

Thats ridiculous. Their pulling a Barney Fife, why give them any bullets at all. Your in a catch 22 situation. I'd fire back in general princibles and worry about the consequences later. I'd bet you'd beat it in any court of law.

I was told that its more of a way to scare off potential thugs thinking that you're an easy target outside the car. They figure he has a gun so he'll shoot me. Some companies are better than others, but I wouldn't bank on them hiring a lawyer for you.

Most companies think so highly of their employees that they make them buy their own guns (unless you want a 20 year old 6 shot .38 revolver) and buy their own kevlar. Plus you're not allowed to carry a backup weapon on you.

That sucks big time! History tells us that most guards who were hijacked or robbed were executed by the perpetrators when they failed to retaliate. and what I mean by execution is a shot in back of the head.

Those two L.A. Bank of America robbers with the full body kevlar suits and automatic rifles shot and killed an armed guard the year before. Walked up to him as he was leaving the truck and shot him point blank with the AK-47 and took his head off.
