the proper kind is sunk in a known amount of (water), the holder temperature heats the water, and thermometer is in the WATER which never touches the reactants (thus, you don't measure water of reaction as the problem suggests)

you see - these bastards are sneaky and that is why i first doubt (thus my off-the-cuff mistake on 5.7) and check before believing anything they've said

i didn't realize it until ex 5.7 - when i RE-CHECKED MY WORK and saw an unkown amount of water in the question. i remembered immediately the book had been hog-washing me - that calorimeters didn't work as they had earlier described.
