Strange humming noise?
Posted by: Tigerstyle ()

Sometimes when it's completely quiet in my house, I detect this strange, low, droning hum. Can modern science explain this? I've asked my family and they sometimes hear it too. I've already put up red tape over all my windows and doors, but nothing can keep it out. I think I'm going insane. I think.. I think.. AHHHHHHHHHHHH

Odds are it is some kind of ground noise being created by a nearby facility, like a factory or waste treatment plant or possibly a construction site.

The noises you hear when it is silent is not you going crazy its a ringing you hear usually at night when its quiet and hearing is more tuned, i forgot whath it is called but google around and you will find the wikipedia article about it. your preety much lost a little bit of your hearing and are cursed with a ringing noise for the rest of your life, it will probably get worst as you get older, i have it too and so do a lot of people.

what do you think the BP oil spill is? Somehow, the main fuel supply to the Southeastern cities being built underground was severed....that oil was being used to power operations in the construction of the shadow government....the underground USA. There are increased reports of The Hum due to the increased activity in the area. WHy do you think Obama has decided NOT to bring in the US military to sort this mess out...because the secret is much safer in the hands of an independent third party like British Petroleum. BP is helping to fund the underground cities whose construction and drilling is the cause of The Hum.

The "Taos Hum" (From Taos, New Mexico) is a well documented phenomenon, and scientists have discovered that it's created by the movement of water in the Earth's Oceans (As well as Continental Drift, and Magma/Mantle movement). Certain ground locations transmit the noise easier, and some people are also more susceptible to hearing it.

Also, another explanation is the fact that houses nowadays are full of electronics, pumps, plumbing, etc., and such elements can in fact create a variety of noises and effects.

actually i've heard what you are talking about too tiger. Havent heard it in a while. But it's like a rally low rumbling sound like so low you can feel it more then hear it. And its definitely not a truck or something, it doesn't sound like a truck. The sound is way too deep and its too brief, like a 1> sec rumble. It always sounds like its coming from outside. Id say i first noticed it about a year ago late late at night. It rumbles several times, like 5-10 times in an hour then stops for days. Then probably about a month later it happened again. And it did this every so often for like a year. I always only noticed it at like 2am. I'm positive its nothing in my house, it's nothing I've ever heard before. I haven't noticed it in about 6 months or so. And I know it's just not me, because it woke up someone I live with a couple times.

I dont think it's artillery or explosions from Quantico - well becuase Ive simply never heard that ever before from the location of my home.

Im deffinatly not crazy, just curious. I almost forgot about it untill i read this.

I'm up right now in Fisherville Kentucky @ 02:00 A.M. EST because I'm trying to determine the source of the low-level intermittent hum that I've been hearing late at night for several years. I would liken it to a distant truck that is miss-firing, (not back-firing). One theory is that I'm actually hearing the earth's magnetic field.... especially during cooler nights when the air is denser. The sound is not annoying... it's just the frustration of not knowing what the origin is. Tigerstyle's reference to tunneling, building, preparing has also crossed my mind in an amusing way.

My theory is that you're hearing "sound", not magnetic fields.

You can't hear magnetic fields, for the same reason you can't hear the light coming out of a flashlight; for the same reason you can't hear radio waves without turning on your radio.

All crazy theories aside. I hear a constant humming noise in the fairfax area. It started around beginning of October and has gotten worse since the leaves started falling off the trees. It is not my ears. I can hear it outside. My wife can hear it but it doesn't bother her as much. It is not magnetic fields or anything like that. It had a definite start date. To me, it sounds like an engine running off in the distance. The windows in my house seem to cancel the other background noise and just let this noise through. I thought it was related to the construction but it didn't stop over thanksgiving and from what I can tell there was no work being done then. So now I don't know what it is.

I dunno. I watched the video. What the one guy was describing is frighteningly similar to what I hear. But there was a distinct start date for this. We did have an earthquake here but that was back in july. I have a hard time believing it's just emanating from the earth. I also find that depressing but it's literally making me go crazy. I have to medicate myself to sleep. Thinking that it won't go away at some point, is very disheartening.

I've heard of this before. My dad lives about a mile and a half from a refinery in Pennsylvania and he says there is a very low frequency hum that keeps him from sleeping well. Almost beyond the threshold of hearing, like you can feel it before you hear it. I use to live there and I don't recall it ever bothering me, but certainly fluids passing through pipes might cause that kind of noise. The refineries along the Delaware river have large torches to burn off waste gasses, and he thinks that might be it, but it could any of dozens of things ringing from passing gasses or liquids.

Listen up, Troy.

The voices are not in my head; they are murmurs in the distance.

Hey, here's another sound I often hear. This is very annoying.

When I'm in bed and lying on my side, which is how I usually sleep, I can often hear my heart beating in my ear. WTF is that?

No matter how I reposition my head or scrunch up my pillow, I still hear my heart in my ear. And, if I focus on the sound, it speeds up.

Sometimes, I try to control the beating sound. If I imagine myself sitting on the beach, at sunset, the beating slows down. If I imagine eesh sending me his disgusting porn, it speeds up.

Anyone else ever hear the heart beating in the ear thing?

This is all very interesting. I too have been hearing humming noises at night. I live in Brevard county in Florida. I can plug my ears and not hear it, so I know it is not me. I decided to touch the glass lastnight and I could feel the vibration on the glass. It is definitley an outside source of something. Very strange. So, for those of you hearing it, you are not crazy. As for the guy hearing male voices in the distance, that is another story. I think that I would pray the blood of Jesus and command whatever it is to leave. Evil does exist and is present in our world, but Jesus can overcome it. I am not judging you in any way and I hope you don't take it that way. May each of you find the peace you need in your life until the return of Jesus. :)

Could be some mind control experiment. Researchers at MIT and Georgia tech. are experimenting with a mind control device with financial assistance from Government agencies including the CIA an NSA. A person is randomly selected for this operation and monitor by such things as satellite, CCTV and agents. You are induced to perform such mundane activities as going to the store at certain times, turning on/shutting off lights at predetermined times and other conscious things without the actual will to do so. The physical manifistation are a ringing in the ear/ears (similar to tinitus) and pain over left ear.

Do you live near power lines or a power transfer station. Water pumping stations also will emit a hum. Does you neighbor have a hot tub or spa. The other option the toilets in the house will make noise when the valves go bad . You can test this by shutting off the water to the toilets.

It's a special project by the government. They are tunneling out of DC for the President to be able to get away in an emergency. Everyone knows about Camp David and the place they had in the mountains, Greenbrier-maybe?. They need to make a new place and with all the additional population around, an underground tunnel getaway makes sense.

Not tinnitus. I've heard it as well, with multiple witnesses. Tinnitus causes a high pitched ringing in the ears. This is a low pitched almost mechanical sound. It typically occurs at night in extremely rural areas. That's about all we really know, aside from the fact that it can almost drive a person insane due to sleep fatigue. I know for a fact that HAARP has been conducting tests in this area. Is it related? If it isn't related then why is FEMA preparing for a disaster in this area? Yes I live along the New Madrid Fault. Do your research. See what happens in May of this year.

There was an X-Files episode about this. The Navy has a super low frequency radio station in the middle of the country that it uses to talk to submarines. In the X-Files, the Navy was doing some sort of wierd experiment with it, and a few people were affected by it very badly. Basically, they had to keep driving to the west as fast as possible. If they stopped the car for more than a few minutes their heads would explode. The one guy was in the car with Moulder, and when they reached the west coast, he cashed in his chips. Was one of the best X-Files eps.

I have a ton of helicopters flying around my house bc of ft belvoir so I attribute it to mind control experiments. My husband laughs, but he will see one day.

For the past few weeks I have heard a continual far away sound. I first heard it when things were quiet at night and I thought it might be coyotes howling far away. But after hearing it longer, it seemed like solar winds or high pitched winds with the howl of a warning siren(s)mixed in. After reading about the FAA and Dept. of Defense conducting tests over the southeast earlier this yr., it seemed more logical that might be the origin. It does not stop, but is a varied, urgent sound 24 hrs. a day. I am trying to adjust, but I think it will eventually cause health problems.

Sometimes, lying in bed I hear a rumbling sound , usually followed by a foul sulpher smell. Sometimes the sound is almost like a duck quacking, sometimes its silent. But the nasty odor is there , no matter what the sound.
Funny thing is, it happens more when I eat beans, onions or garlic.
Can certain foods actually summon ghosts ?

Tease!

I however do have a ghost in my house.

Seen by every member of the family at different times, described exactly the same by each of us. The dogs have reacted to it (yet he seems happiest when the dogs can not enter the room he's currently occupying.

Don't have a clue who he is, where he came from and don't really care. It's kind of nice having someone look after the house while we're away.

I lived in a haunted house until I was almost 5 years old in Annandale VA. Fortunately it seemed nice (Civil War Soldier ghost).

Let me guess, you stood in front of the mirror and chanted "Civil War ghost" several times and then cut off the lights.

So many sites reporting worsening levels of the HUM. We stareted having teh HUM problem mid 2009. Our little group is in Western CT and has had consultant testing and our own research and testing showing our problem is casued by the changes made to the HP natural gas pipeline systems here. A map of people like you folks identifying locations shows a 99% correlation of HUM reprots to proximities to these lines around the country. Depending on geology like faults, rifts the HUM ILFN sound waves from these lines is heard and sensed many tens of miles from the lines. Our sypmtoms are like night ranger mentioning from KY- a constant low frequency sound like an idling deisel that has a miss fire. Always heard inside the house or in a parked car. The phenomena casuses wild life problems here as well as visible water surface vibrations on the pool, including small standing waves. I am capturing the location data you provided here to add to the 450 plus points so far. This is teh first site that actually seems focusing on the ideas behind our theory of teh cause.

BTW- I think they call the in bed effect "texas barking spiders"

Has anyone else just sat in front of a mirror for about 10 minutes, staring into your own eyes? After about 2 minutes, in your peripheral vision you can wee your face distort then your brain sees your face as an almost demon looking face.

If you heard a car running outside your home, you wouldn't think anything of it, would you? Well, what if you heard that car idling all night? That's how it started. I awakened one night this past February and heard this sound. At 6 AM when I got up, the sound was still there. Opened a window, no such sound outside. It was February, below zero here. It wasn't AC.
.
So, if this is from the U.S. military, how come my a neighbour and I can hear it in Canada? The sound I heard on "Unsolved Mysteries" does not sound like what I'm hearing. I'm hearing a high/low fluctuating type of sound - always unmistakeable at night.

Wind does not, as far as I can ascertain, seem to have anything to do with it. I hear it whether it's windy or not, and at this point, through two seasons of the year.

The sound seems to resonate through the very structure of the house - even the basement. It sounds like it is mechanical or electrical in nature and yet I still hear it with the power supply off, the water supply turned off, etc..I've tried every single suggestion anywhere online that I can find. Nothing explains why, after more than a decade living in the same house, I'm suddenly hearing this. No construction anywhere near me. No pipelines (I checked the pipeline map). I know what tinnitus sounds like, this ain't it! It seems to have a high and a low sound. Tinnitus never sounds low, it is completely different.

Everyone mentions this "Taos Hum" thing. Whatever that may or may not be, the "Hum" recording I've heard on YouTube doesn't sound like the noise I'm hearing. It isn't a buzzing sound. It has two notes to it which may mean it has more than one source. I've heard of harmonic interference caused by appliances that are along an electrical circuit but if that is it, why can I still hear it when the power is off? Perhaps it could be caused by something different at every location people are hearing it - but the end result is the same. Who knows?

All I know is, I'm not crazy. I don't hear it at work. I don't believe in ghosts or aliens or even "the earth resonating" beneath my feet! Sometimes, I can hear it in my detached garage. Sometimes, I can even make it out on the street around my house. Never, however, have I been able to localize it. It seems to be everywhere and nowhere and this is what so many others have described as well. It is baffling and disturbing and as I sit here now, listening to it, I long for the quiet days over the last decade when I could sit in my kitchen and be aware of nothing but the slow steady sound of a clock ticking!

Felicia
The pipelines that are mis behaving can be tens of miles away. You haven't said where in CDN you hear this, but depending on faults, rifts and now likely bodies of water, the ILFN ground born transmission can carry over 25 miles (maybe hundreds) resoanating structures like yor home and even your parked, closed in car. We've tested and proved it. So, don't be so sure HP natural gas or hazardous liquid pipelines aren't the source.

The sound typically reproted and we hear in CT USA, sounds like an idling diesel, and at times when bad it gets a buzz saw type effect, You can feel vibrotactical (tingly) sneation son you feet bottoms (maybe other parts as well). As one observationof many, our pool water surface vibrates.

I live in the Annandale, Springfield, VA area and the sound is very real in my house. It seems to be louder at night. Doesn't seem to be a sound I can plug my ears and not hear. Its more like an engine idling with the feeling of a slight vibration. Would love to know what it is and get rid of it. Wakes me up at night sometimes and I have a hard time getting back to sleep because of the constant humming. I have been hearing it for several months, but seems more pronounced now. Anyone else in this area hearing it?

Okay, this humming noise is more than likely all the heat pumps in the area. One of the things I've noticed during huge power outages is the decided lack of that sound. All the heating and cooling systems in the area really do make a lot of noise.

Additionally, there is a constant, yet variable, noise from the the aircraft overhead. During 9/11 when the FAA grounded all flights there was a noticeable change in the area noise. Of course, that didn't last long as fighter jets and AWACs planes went up, but it was noticeable.

My guess is the noise everyone is hearing is some combination of the two. Which would also explain why it changes at times and seems to be more pronounced at times.

I hear "the hum" also, I used to live in Cleveland Ohio and never heard anything like it until I moved to Clarkston Michigan.I didn't start hearing the hum until a little over a year of living here,my girlfriend thought I was insane because she couldn't hear anything at all. The sound starts off very very low and it sort of pulsates before getting louder. I was amazed to see that I wasn't the only person to witness this annoyance. This is the best example I could find as to what I'm hearing.[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSkKd8Bgg3k] the sound video begins about 1:20. It sounds like someone with a really crappy sound system with a lot of trunk rattle. I can't believe my g/f doesn't hear it because it does get pretty loud .

I live in the Northern area of New Jersey almost into the Pennsylvania, and most of the my surroundings consist of state forest woods. During some of the nights as I try to go to sleep I hear a almost coded sound, which seems to be a very low frequency. It reminds me of some sort of a strange code.

I started hearing The Hum in February 2010. I was living in Woodbridge, near the VER station on the North side of town, in the Belmont Bay neighborhood. At first I thought the sound was caused by neighbors playing music with a lot of bass. After several weeks of incessant sound, usually heard best late at night and in the early morning, I abandoned that theory and began to search for other sources.

Where I was in my three-story townhome certainly seemed to have an effect on how loud or detectable the sound was. It was always the worst in the basement, and sometimes it seemed like the room was vibrating. I wondered how it was possible that others could not feel / experience this when it was that strong.

In July I moved to the Port Potomac neighborhood, also in Woodbridge, about six-miles South of my last home. In my new home here I can hear the sound even more clearly than before. I have long-thought that this sound could be the result of a local industrial operation, and I now live much closer to Dominion Power's Possum Point Station.

I have made little progress, if any, in discovering the source of this annoyance. It's certainly not Tinnitus, since one will usually stop hearing the sound upon going outside, or traveling away from the area. This is a very low frequency sound, around 10hz-50hz, heard by less than 10% of the population.

There are a lot of theories and no solid conclusions.

I live in Glasgow, Scotland and have been hearing the 'hum' for just over two years now. It first started, or I first became aware of it, after I had been really ill and have heard it ever since. I have stayed in three different locations, all around the Glasgow/Renfrewshire area and the noise remains the same wherever I go. Nobody else hears it but I'm 99% sure it isn't something internal. I have to sleep every night with earplugs in which helps somewhat but doesn't totally block it out. I found some info on thyroid problems recently which stated that some symptoms can include hearing (and sometimes seeing??!!) things that no-one else can? I'm having thyroid checked but not convinced that this is the cause as it really doesn't seem to be coming from within and, like I said earlier, I can pretty much block it out with earplugs. I also seem to hear it more (maybe all) from my right ear.
Is there anyone out there from my neck of the woods with this devastating problem?
All the posts here are from USA and I'd hate to think I'm the only one here afflicted. I also don't sleep more than a couple of hours at a time at night which I attribute to the 'humming'. The hum I hear is intermittent, on and off but constant, almost like a generator noise and I used to blame my neighbours central heating system.
Does anybody have any suggestions/cure???????

I first started hearing this humming noise when I move to Roanoke VA over a decade ago. It is the same idling diesel noise described by others. It is constant, and I am the only person in the household to hear it. It has suddenly gotten much louder this week, and I can now hear it outside. I too have looked for possible sources of the noise, but have largely failed. I do have several potential sources though, as I live about a half mile from high voltage lines, and about 1.5 miles from a microwave tower and a natural gas pipeline. I'd sure love to know the origin.

Turn the breakers all off in your house and once the house is silent then put your ear to the walls and hard flooring.

Is the sound louder or same or less?

I lived for about 5 years in the Sterling area in a house where the landlord lived in the basement and rented the rooms out. He was constantly complaining about the low pitched hum and vibration that seemed to be heard only in the basement which was built partially underground. It was driving him batty, so he started tooling around the area at all hours of the day and night trying to find the origin of this noise and vibration. He finally figured out that it was coming from the underground tunneling activities at the Dulles airport where they were digging train tunnels. Somehow, the bedrock was transmitting this noise for miles. He then sold the house and moved to the California area to get away from the noise! His complaints to the airport of course fell on deaf ears.

I've been hearing this (low hum, like a distant diesel engine, constant) for a couple years now in the Lake Tahoe area. Very noticeable in the house, less so in the car, almost imperceptible outside. I also have scoured the area looking for a source without any success. I believe it's real external phenomena; that is, not internal like tinnitus. Over the past month I've been in Tucson and Palm Springs (where I am now) and have experienced the same noise. I'm listening to it now as I write. Only recently have I looked into it on the internet, and it blows me away how many people seem to be experiencing the same thing. I believe it may be electrical in origin, as it has disappeared during power outages. Whatever it is, it is most definitely VERY irritating.

Ive had the same noise for over two years. It comes and goes and is worse at night. Lots of investigating it is a water leak somewhere. It is very hard to find. A knob isnt tight a washer worn out a toilet valve. Try turning water off at main valve. Bleed water at sinks. It can be multiple leaks. Good luck

I have heard this "hum" for three Months now. We live in Southern Maryland and have for 30 years. In April we started to hear what sounds like a diesel engine running all the time. There has been a few times when it stops but never for longer than a day. We live on the Potomac river and can see the Possum Point power station in the distance and feel this is the source of this annoying noise. We have made contact with them several times but they deny starting any new equipment. Has anyone else noticed this?

I hear it also sometimes but only if I put my head in a certain angle.

Just as an example if I look south the sound is strong but if I look any other direction then the sound is gone.

I used to hear this other sound now gone but I could only hear it when I pitch my head as a 45 degree angle. weird!

I am sure other people asked you to do this before but next time turn off your entire house electricity.

If you still hear it then also place your ear against different walls of your house. Do you hear it louder when ear agaisnt the wall? If it is louder when ear is against the wall then the sound is from the ground.

I heard it one night when laying in bed. I suspect drilling.

Why do you think they call them "drones"?

They're.
Watching.
You.

I'm hearing impaired and I get these annoying sound in my head. My hearing aids has prevented the humming noise. But now my dog chewed my hearing aids and I have been suffering for two weeks. People all over the world are dealing with the hum according to a few articles that I have read. From taking medicine to retraining your brain to tuned out the sound. All kinds of possibilities. The name they call this humming is tinnitus. Talk to your doctor about it and go from there. Good LUck, Tiger.

I was just awoken AGAIN by a creepy low frequency sound. I live in the south Brevard area on the island . When noises like thus occur, it always seems to be at early hours of the morning ans are loud enough to wake me up and strike a bit if concern and slight fear. My best guess is that there is some kind of military aircraft they're using at Patrick air force base that is being kept a secret ,that would explain the late night test drives. Or.... Perhaps rockets being launched from the cape without giving knowledge to the public.
