Maybe it’s tinnitus. Look it up on Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tinnitus

I started hearing this low fequency hum the first day I moved into The Amberliegh apartments next door to Fairfax Hospital. It drove me to stay at other peoples houses as much as possible during the later part of the winter. Its by far the worst sound... it keeps me up and keeps me wearing headphones a majority of time I spend at home to drown out the noise. The hum is so bad that it makes me sick to my stomach sometimes. I work from home and this has caused issues with being able to focus. In general, I can't imagine this frequency at the volume it's at can be legal.

I have pin pointed the noise by recreating it because the sound is to low to record. The sound is between 28 - 33hz and seems to fluctuate in volume.

The sound stopped over the summer but is now back. I contacted the hospital a number of times because I think its due to the blowers they have running. They are nice and seem concerned when I actually got ahold of the engineer once, but he never has called me back. Since our first convo, I have left 10 messages for him to get a status on his research but he refuses to call me back.

I will be contacting Fairfax County this week to report this issue. If anything I just want it documented so I can move out of this apartment and get away from this god-awful noise.

For those still looking for a source, keep your eyes open for any sort of factory size blow off fans for commercial HVAC systems.

People living around Follin Lane/Electric Ave in Vienna have been dealing with HVAC noise problems at the terrorist screening center for a few years now.

Variable frequency drives (vfd) or freq drives on the cooling towers.

I think the humm is bullshit but I did hear that idle tractor noise humm sound once and I knew it was not me and I knew there was no real 18 wheeler anyplace near me.

I just place this in my weird file of my life.

Thank heavens I found this! I didn't know what to call the noise I hear so I called it a generator noise. I only received 1 serious post from someone who also heard it here is southeastern Fairfax county. The word hum describes it perfectly. I used to hear it about a year ago during the day, and then it stopped. However, right around the first of October 2012 it started up again, and this time during the night. I can hear it through my pillow. I have learned a lot from your responses. To all of you who say tinnitus - not it. I have had tinnitus before and this is not it. This is a low, droning hum that will drive you batty. I'm glad to hear that folks in Woodbridge hear it also because that's the direction of where I believe it's coming from. I'm also going to check out some of the "hum" forums.

I live in Puyallup and am being kept awake by this sound. Its 5 30 am, been listening for about 20 minutes. Its a very low, pulsating hum. I know its not my ears and I've lived in the area for 24 years and have only heard this a handful of times, kinda creepin me out.

On the incinerator. Certain motor speeds cause harmonics.

I also live in Puyallup and have heard the low hum at night on and off over several years. I had not noticed it for some time. However, recently the hum is back and is even waking me up at night.

You are referring to tinnitus (spelling?). The frequency of the humming is the same as where you have damage.

We moved into our home here in Hollywood, MD in August of 2012, and I didn't hear the 'humming/droning' until this past October. I thought that it was me, at first, because I tend to hear electricity and things like that, but I went outside, and it was still there, and I plugged my ears, and it was gone. I can drown it out with a fan. I can also feel it in the windows. It starts every night around 8:30PM, without fail, and is done early in the morning, probably around 6AM. I have absolutely no idea what it could be, but I thought it was really interesting what people were saying about noticing the noise starting up [again] around the October timeframe. I seriously feel like this noise is going to make me crazy, or make me want to move. Anyone else in the area hearing this?

you're hearing the remnants of the comet ISON. the sun partially destroyed its elliptical path but the remaining electromagnetic waves are still traveling to earth in the form of intense radiation. its more detectable when it is dark out due to less interference.

What a bunch of maroons.

In the fall you have tens of thousands of outdoor heat pumps all running at the same approximate frequency. With a little wind in the right direction the sound will pass freely across the land due to the lack of tree cover.

You are hearing fan and motor noise.

No end of times horns or aliens or bigfoot or government super weapons.

Now close the window and go to sleep.

the latest noise I hear is when a hole is almost covered up it escapes and almost wants to whistle so the failed harmonics sound like coming from the air vents but all power is shut off to my house.

But even within the failed harmonics there is also a slight bell type sound.

not the banging of a bell sound but the type you would hear as if sliding wet fingers around a wine glass.

then over that noise I can hear regular noise like the train in the distance and other stuff.

Even without electrics you have other sources for noise, like plumbing.

Also, a great site for research on earth changes phenomena like this and many more is documented and explained in the website www.zetatalk.com. Some of it has to do with the Nibiru complex ploughing through out solar system, the continental plates are under huge stress and are loosening up and moving, while the inner earth magma is moving around due to interactions with magnetic forces. This will get a lot worse until Nibiru leaves our Solar system on its orbit outwards again.

The funny thing about this is the government is tunneling out roads and underground "safe" bases to hide from the carnage expected to happen on top at the earth's surface levels, without a thought about the earthquake danger that will cause these so-called "safe bases" to be turned into their own tombs.

That's what I was hearing on Cape Cod a year ago. An intermittent low droan like an engine revving and slowing. Same notes all the time back and forth. I'm near an air force base that house PAVE PAWS, a cold war heavy duty radar system (only four in the US) plus who know what else goes on at that base. I've always thought the first hum I mention has to do with electricity or the motor of some huge distant mechanism. I am sure that it wasn't Tinnitus. Now, however I'm hearing a two-note hum that is different.

The earth makes sounds -- plates and such rubbing together way beneath the earth's surface..
Heck, I heard the very sound in Springfield VA a couple of months ago -- eerie, but cool too.
When an earthquake epicentered out of Germantown, MD several years ago, I ran and opened the front door, and could hear that sound, but it was echoeing.
That quaked happened around AM ET

I think I may have the answer for those of us in SE Fairfax county. I recently learned that there is a 36 inch Dominion natural gas pipeline that runs through Mason Neck. It's pumped by a large generator in the Potomac. I told the Dominion worker that I could hear it pumping and he just laughed at me. I recently went to Culpepper to look at a property. There is also a natural gas pipeline in the vicinity of that house. Sure enough, I could hear the same humming. At least for me - the mystery is solved.
