LONDON (Reuters) – An ad for a TV dating show has been banned for suggesting that redheads are unattractive, Britain's advertising watchdog said on Wednesday.

Virgin Media's newspaper advert for the program "Dating in the Dark" included the text: "How do you spot a ginger in the dark?"

Virgin said the premise of the show was to challenge people's perception of attractiveness and to encourage decisions based on personality as well as looks.

However the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) agreed with three complainants that the ad was likely to cause serious offence and should not be used again.

"We considered the text was likely to be interpreted ... as a statement that reflected a choice between looks and personality ... being a suggestion that people with ginger hair were unattractive," the ASA said in a statement.

"We considered the ad was unlikely to be interpreted to be light-hearted in tone and was instead likely to be seen as prejudicial against people with ginger hair."

Other adverts in the series used to promote the show had included the tagline: "When the lights come on I just hope I haven't been kissing Shrek."

On Tuesday, Britain's biggest retailer Tesco apologized and said it had withdrawn a Christmas card which showed a child with red hair sitting on the lap of Santa Claus under the banner: "Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones."

While it is not an absolute yes or no, per se, it is an absolute that if you are a red head, you fall at the far ends of the spectrum, ie. you are either hot or god aweful fugly. There is no in between.

A LEADING UK supermarket chain has withdrawn a Christmas card that poked fun at "gingers'' after claims of discrimination.
Davinia Phillips, a mum of three flame-haired children, saw red when she came across a card which stated: "Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones.''
She lodged a complaint with the store and went public to defend redheads everywhere against "gingerism''.
"I kept thinking is it me because I've got ginger kids and I'm a bit over-reactive mother?'' she told BBC television.
"But everybody I've spoken to said if that had of been about an obese child, or a child with glasses, or a child with braces, or a coloured child, then there would be a massive uproar.''
"I just said there was nothing wrong with being a ginger, or a ninja for that matter,'' she said.
"I have never seen anything in my life prompting making fun out of people with ginger hair.
"Maybe I'm just being naive but they shouldn't be able to make fun of ginger children like that.''
While critics dubbed her a "ginger whinger'', supermarket chain Tesco released an apologetic statement saying the card had been withdrawn.
"We sell a large range of Christmas cards including some which are intended to be humorous,'' the statement said.
"It is never our intention to offend any customer and we are sorry if this card caused any upset.''
Redheads are often the target of comedians, with Australia's Chris Lilley once launching a 'Sorry Ranga Day' for a tongue-in-cheek reconciliation with the ginger generation.

Well, there are hideous red heads, but when they're cute, its exotic. Not too crazy about the freckles though.

The problem is that their skin type is easily damaged in the sun and they don't weather well as they get older. One interesting bonus is that fire crotch but that is a myth cause no one wants to see that bush anymore, shave that shit.

Donna from that 70's show was always my favorite. Especially when she actually dressed like a woman and not like a tomboy. I do dig that 70's look. I was very disappointed when I saw her later as a blonde.
