Here's a way to save money:

Every professional administrative employee(educator type)-including those at Gatehouse, Fair Ridge, etc. should block out one day a month to substitute in a classroom.

This would remind them what FCPS is all about. It would give them an opportunity to see what it is really like in the classroom--and help them see the problems and demands on the school teachers.

I would also like to suggest that each administrator should spend one hour a week on cafeteria or recess duty.

These policies should include Jack Dale.

It will never happen.......

These are good ideas. I would venture to say that most admins DO have lunch duty...but the Fairfax Ridge and Gatehouse people, that would be good.
To be realistic, I would say one day a month.

You say it would never happen, but I disagree there. It most certainly could and should.

Admins hate to be in the classroom. My sister works for FCPS in admin and she said she would walk out then teach again. She also takes many days off with pay. Her boss looks the other way since it seems no one cares. They laugh and laugh and Jack Dale could care less.

A few years ago I was out shopping in the middle of the morning when I ran into a teacher who lives in my neighborhood. She was a itenerent specialist (she taught at several schools to a specific type of special needs child). I ran into her in one store and she told me that the child she was supposed to be teaching was out sick, so she stopped by for a minute on her way to her next school. I then saw her thirty minutes later in another store. The irony is that she was probably also getting paid mileage.....

I used to be a classroom teacher. No way could I have ducked out to go shopping. We couldn't even duck out for lunch. This teacher could have gone directly to her next school and given some other child extra help. Or, she could have done some of that "paperwork" that all the specialists say they have. (It is true that they have paperwork, but so do classroom teachers.)

FCPS Superintendent Proposes FY 2012 Budget to Support Continued Student Growth and Salary Increases

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Superintendent Jack D. Dale has released the school system’s FY 2012 Proposed Budget of $2.2 billion with a projected enrollment of 177,416 students. The proposed budget includes an additional 258.4 positions to support changes in student demographics and projected membership growth of 2,120 students as well as market scale adjustments and step increases for all eligible employees following two years of frozen salaries.

“This budget provides funds to support our continued student growth and to compensate our employees who make FCPS the world-class school system that it is,†said Dale. “The [Fairfax County] School Board set employee compensation as a priority for the FY 2012 budget, and this budget reflects that priority. To support these initiatives, along with rising costs for retirement, health and life insurance, and to comply with the mandated implementation of online testing for all students taking the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL) tests, we are asking the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors for an increase of 3.0 percent, or $48.8 million, in the transfer of funds over the FY 2011 level.â€

During the past three fiscal years (FY 2009-FY 2011), FCPS took proactive steps to address declining revenues. Reductions and cost avoidances totaled more than $465 million and included the elimination of more than 1,400 positions. FCPS increased revenue by charging fees for Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) tests and for Virginia High School League athletic participation in FY 2011, and class size was increased by 0.5 students per teacher in FY 2009 and FY 2010. Employee salaries were frozen in FY 2010 and FY 2011.

“While our students continue to outpace their counterparts in Virginia and the nation academically, we are seeing an increase in the number of students who need extra support and resources to succeed,†said Dale. “In FY 2012, we project that one in four students will be eligible for free and reduced-price meals—the fastest growing segment of our student population. We also expect to see a 15 percent increase in the number of students receiving English for speakers of other languages (ESOL) instruction.

“By FY 2012, overall student membership will have grown 8 percent—more than 13,000 students—since FY 2007,†he added. “Despite this growth, however, FCPS remains in the middle of area school systems in its cost per pupil, expected to rise just $239 for FY 2012.†The cost per pupil in FY 2012 of $12,836 is still below the FY 2010 level.

Demonstrating great fiscal efficiency, FCPS has the lowest percentage of nonschool-based management positions (less than 1 percent) among Washington area school divisions, as reported by the Washington Area Boards of Education. More than 85 percent of FCPS’ budget goes to instruction, and nearly 93 percent of positions are in classrooms and school buildings, directly serving the needs of students. FCPS continually seeks improved efficiencies and in FY 2012 has identified additional savings in transportation and energy management.

“Our starting teacher salaries have declined over the past two years,†says Dale. “We need to bring those salaries up so we can continue to attract the most qualified teachers possible to serve our students. Additionally, we now rank fifth in the region in terms of mid-career teacher salaries and are next to last in maximum teacher salaries. It will be more difficult to attract and retain experienced teachers if we can’t provide salaries that are competitive with neighboring school districts.â€

The Fairfax County School Board will hold public hearings on the FY 2012 budget on January 24 and 25 at Jackson Middle School, 3020 Gallows Road in the Falls Church area of Fairfax County; the speakers list for those public hearings opens on Friday, January 7 at http://www.fcps.edu/schlbd/requestspeak.htm. For complete information on the FCPS FY 2012 budget, including the budget calendar, visit http://www.fcps.edu/news/fy2012.htm.

How are 93 percent of positions in classrooms and school buildings yet less than 1 percent are nonschool-based management? Where are the other 6%? I guess those are non-school based non management?

It seems like the report by the Washington Area Boards of Education needs to define what the word "management" means for various school divisions and what non-school based means in general?

Not sure what "staffing reserve" is--but apparently it is now down one due to the need for a full time position to reach out to underrepresented student groups for TJ.
My interpretation: FCPS is hiring someone to work full time to get more minorities into TJ???? FULL TIME? Really?

Thomas Jefferson Admissions Outreach $0.0 million
Specialist 0.0 positions
In order to reach out to underrepresented student groups, a position
from the staffing reserve will be permanently converted to an
admissions outreach specialist for Thomas Jefferson High School for
Science and Technology. This will reduce the staffing reserve from 211.1
to 210.1 position

Please note that the legal fees for FCPS in FY 2011 are estimated at 6,579,431. FY2010 was 2,571,749. The request for FY 2012 is 2,512,205.........?

Other professional services for 2011 are $25,441,281. This is double what they spent in 2010 and 11 million less than the request for 2012. What are "other professional services?

This is from page 160 of the budget.

Teachers are indeed a special kind of people. They talk about their jobs a lot with other people (and mostly other teachers) because they have very difficult, but at the same time rewarding jobs. They always have a story because when you work with people as intensely as they do, there always is one! I wouldn't go so far as to say that if you haven't been a teacher, you have never worked. Those kinds of generalizations are obviously ridiculous.

I would say that some medical professionals (nurses primarily) and policing are also difficult since they deal with the public in intense situations as well (and there are probably other jobs that do that also). Those jobs (and teaching) can bring the kinds of rewards that few other occupations do (in terms of helping people and communities). The people who do these kinds of jobs know that they will never get a king's ransom, but they would definitely like to maintain a respectable standard of living (not lavish, but comfortable) and feel some security for their retirement. I don't think this is too much to ask for these people. They should be able to support families if they wish. These people make good parents and need to be able to provide. These should be valued members of our society.

Just because they have 10 applicants doesn't mean those people aren't applying to other school districts . . . that would be sort of the norm for someone looking for a job (put in resumes in many places). It's not like they are only willing to work for FCPS or they'll die.

Fairfax County Public Schools to Host Two Instructional Job Fairs

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), the largest school system in Virginia, is searching for educators with a strong academic background and a passion to make a difference in the lives of students during the 2011-12 school year. To meet growing critical field areas, especially in special education, math, and science, principals will interview candidates at secondary school and elementary school instructional job fairs on Saturday, February 26, (snow date Saturday, March 5) and Saturday, March 26, (snow date Saturday, April 2) respectively.

Instructional candidates interested in becoming a part of a dynamic and diverse community that offers a challenging academic program for all students are encouraged to apply online. FCPS offers support to new instructional employees through an intensive mentoring program, professional development opportunities, and outstanding health and retirement benefits. Also offered is the Smooth Transitions program, specifically designed for instructional employees new to FCPS, which offers many incentives including an interest-free transition loan; housing opportunities; and apartment, health club, and technology discounts.

Job fair interviews are by invitation only. Candidates interested in being considered for an interview should follow the job fair guidelines found at http://www.fcps.edu/DHR/applicants/jobfair.htm

Candidates interested in the secondary instructional fair must complete all steps by the close of business on Monday, February 14, and candidates interested in the elementary instructional fair must complete all steps by close of business Monday, March 14. Questions should be directed to the FCPS Welcome Center at 571-423-3000.

I remember driving down Rte 7 in a snow storm to a job interview, and when I got there, everyone that was interviewing me was there too. But again, that was a private company. If you can't make it in the snow for interview, kind of tells you something about the motivation of the individual, doesn't it?

Willy, I can and I teach. I love my job and I'm very good at it. I teach high school arts and the kids want to be in my class. I work my butt off on a daily basis, but that's what I should be doing. I also work well into the summer and well before the "teacher workdays" in the fall, but that's what I need to do to prepare for the kids. Most of the parents I deal with are wonderful and supportive. In general, I like my colleagues and my administrators are fair and supportive. Yup, I have kids with issues, but what high schooler doesn't have issues? Nobody's job is always a walk in the park every day, but there have been precious few times in my career when I have seriously considered leaving teaching. I haven't had a raise or COL increase in 3 years, but I'm thankful that I have a job when so many are less fortunate. See, Willy, I'm NOT IN IT FOR THE MONEY. If anyone thinks that they should teach for either money or summers off, they are delusional. But if anyone is considering the calling of teaching (yes, Willy, it is a calling) because they have a passion for a subject and for kids, they should teach. We need them. Those who CAN, teach, Willy.

In my many years of teaching I cannot think of why they would close Clifton. It is a great SMALL school. Many kids live on 5 acres or more. Should the kids be made to suffer? The parents have asked for nothing. If they are so elite they kids could all go to private school. They want a a local school. The test scores show the parents/kids are bright. What is wrong with that?

Shame on many for not sticking up for what is working. Money or not we are still talking about kids.

Extraneous administrators should be cut. There is no earthly need for 12 month directors and senior staff members operating out of "The Ridge." They are not necessary for school system operations and should be eliminated.

Schools with two assistant principals should receive an automatic cut. Either that or the second assistant principal should have a 10 month contract instead of an 11 month contract or more than one school assignment -- similar to psychologists and social workers.

Teachers deserve a raise. They are in the classroom and work with students, not shuffling papers behind a desk. The stupidity has got to stop!

On the news has been the stories about protests in New Hampshire or Rhode Island, can't remember, about teachers getting notices about the possibility of lay-offs. I can remember when I frist started teaching in FCPS, many years ago, that it was not uncommon to get notifications that teachers might get laid-off or destaffed from the school they were in. Destaffing is no big deal it meant that you sitll had a job somewhere. Of course, there were never any lay-offs though it was just a publicity ploy by the school board to get funding for the school budget.

I don't ever recall anyone demonstrating about notification in Fairfax County that there might be lay-offs though.

Great idea from school system watchdog:

"Schools with two assistant principals should receive an automatic cut. Either that or the second assistant principal should have a 10 month contract instead of an 11 month contract or more than one school assignment -- similar to psychologists and social workers."

I think requiring 1 AP in every school occurred after 9/11. FCPS wanted to be sure someone was always in charge. My question is: Why should the principal be gone so much? This is the problem with education: MEETINGS! Why don't they use their wonderful technology for meetings? This is what a lot of businesses are doing now.

When I first started teaching, my principal required the teachers to read the bulletin board (on the wall in the teacher's lounge) every a.m. We had to sign it so that she would know we had seen the announcements, etc. That was the pupose of faculty meetings in those days, too--to be sure that we all had the information we needed. I guess you could call it her version of email. (Because of her bulletin board, we had few faculty meetings--she was a great principal. She was all over that school and truly cared about the students and teachers.)

Today, the principals are gone half the time. These meetings justify the need for Gatehouse employees and all those staff members who collect large salaries. I

I think if FCPS let the principals do their job in their schools, we would have more effective teachers.

Also--my opinion--I think there is an inverse relationship between money going into schools and the results. The more moeny that goes in, the less achievement. Just saying.

Wouldn't it make more sense to have a teacher cross trained as a stand in for the principal, versus adding an AP to every ES across the county. This is for 'emergencies', correct?

Jack Dale didn't give a hoot about teacher pay raises until now because it is an election year. This is just more political BS. If they wanted to give the teachers raises, they would have cut the fat from their bloated non-instructional Admin Staff already. I am sure the teachers would be more than happy to see any of the NUMEROUS Assistant Superintendants go which would start freeing up some of their 6 figured salaries and also mean less Admin work for the teachers. Why not get rid of the 100+ people that essentially amount to being their own in-house construction company and outsource that work.

Jack Dale needs to go. We need new Board Members that will get rid of him once and for all.
