I will admit, he looked like one of the Best Athletes on the Field against the Nationally Ranked Dematha Secondary and their 3 SEC DB Recruits, as well he looked like one of the Best Athletes against Centreville and Their 7 D-1 Recruits...all the Rest of the Film he looked no Better than Spalding, Running Through Blown Coverages and Missed assignments, but he's a D-1 Recruit so...

How many D-1 Football offers did he have? He was so good at football that he chose to go to Boston U for basketball. Give me a break, the kids is not that good of an athlete. Spalding is a Sophomore, and he is already a better athlete. In my (non-Westfield biased opinion!)

None would be the answer, not FBS anyway, there was only one D-1 player on the team if I'm not mistaken.

Pretty amazing when you consider the season they had.

Do you guys even know what an athlete is? Scanlon just used his height to his advantage. he never out ran, out muscled or out athleted anyone... hes just tall and can catch with a decent vertical which is really all you need to be a successful receiver in high school. Westfield won the State they had to give OPOY to someone on westfield... If Soco Won it would have been Ramsey and Allen for OPOY and DPOY If Oscar Smith won it would have been shonn mitchell OPOY

Brandon Delbridge - who Scanlon beat for that TD - is listed in the VHSL program as 6'0", 180. He is an All-757 First Team DB, VHSL 6A First Team DB, and made a ton of big plays for OS last season.

Tutt only guarded him in the first half of the first matchup last year in which he had one catch on all of two targets... They underused him as a junior. Look at what he did to Peyton Scott from lake Braddock. He made a Marshall committ look like he had never played football before

Rodrigo Cardova from Westfield is better. Best offensive lineman in the state.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that were true he'd have multiple offers at this point, so who are they from?

Let's face it, most any class of 2017 football player with legitimate FBS or FCS talent already holds offers at this stage. The tape of their respective junior seasons are what catches the eye of recruiters.

Most of these kids have already heard from schools, the very talented ones have already received offers. It's such a cutthroat process that these programs need to stay ahead of the game. Especially at the FBS level they are always one year ahead in recruiting come springtime, of course there are exceptions.

There are some kids by virtue of the summer camp circuit that will gain some attention and offers but most of the FBS programs have their eyes towards 2018 kids now. If any player is considered "the best in the state" at his position he would certainly hold multiple offers from the FBS powers at this stage.

I think it varies by position. Sometimes, particularly at the lineman position, recruiting lags a bit, because kids are still growing into the size. Other times, they are recruited based on their size at the moment, more so than what they actually do on the field.

Bernacchi was not offered by Navy. His only offer is Marshall. Bernacchi's tape is all down blocks and cuts. Due to the nature of the offense he doesn't show a ton of skill. He is physical and shows good potential. Robinson cuts too much though. They also don't pass like someone else brought up. I would want to see him pass set if I were to offer.

Oakton has both Banbury and Forrester. Forrester has interest from all Ivy schools (Harvard and Cornell have firm "offers".

Lots of quality lineman this year.

I doubt Oakton will be elite again until they get the Fox Mill kids back in the future. The redistricting really hurt them. Westfield was also hurt initially by the South Lakes redistricting but they have recovered since. Could only imagine how good they would be if they still had those Floris kids.

Oakton has a couple gaurentied wins like Madison, Falls Church, Herndon, and possibly Chantilly because there losing alot in offense so yeah most likely another 5-5 season, I betting Westfield goes all the way again

Just finished watching both Banbury and Bernacchi's film. Both are pretty good. Banbury looks more athletic. Bernacchi looks more physical/relentless. You could argue that Banbury has more upside since he's the better athlete, but the nastiness Bernacchi plays with is rare. Robinson's entire Oline looked very agressive. Lots of Olinemen drive blocking people 15 yards downfield.
Did some research and both players have been offered by Navy. It would be pretty cool if they got the chance to play together at Navy. Good luck to both.

Not sure what your definition of "quality Olineman" really is. Size is the key to these guys being recruited. The Robinson OL couldn't even move Soco's smaller DL around, so not sure why they are considered good either. A quality OLineman can fight every single play, while being quick and aggressive. Don't let oversized sloths confuse you when it comes to a "quality."

Oakton has always had size. Always been huge. Smart too( good coaching helps - Rowley). Every year it seems they have an O line that prob averages 250. When they're really good is when they have the skill guys to match. (Payne , Grimm , Watts , Coyer). That's when they make state runs. But like it's been stated redistricting hurt there neighborhoods. Rich get richer

Excuse ? It's not an excuse. It's a legitimate reason. The whole thing is bull shit. Booster parents don't want there kids going to school with certain demographics. Redistricting has just killed some programs. That's a fact.

Look at Lee. Lee used to be somewhat competitive. Now they're just garbage. In every sport. Lost all their kids to West Springfield and South County. There are literally kids leaving Lee to take "AP classes " at SoCo just so they don't have to be on a crappy team.

Same thing with hayfield. Used to be a very competitive school. South county opening destroyed them.

Look at what Soco has become.Dominant in multiple sports.

And look at Annandale. Annandale used to compete for championships for crying out loud. Every year in the playoffs. All the neighborhoods that produced kids go to Lake Braddock or Woodson now. Heck they should probably be in Div 5 cause Hispanics, Arabs, and Asians don't necessarily play football and that's half their population. Although Annandale has had a little resurgence in football the past two years

Look at Lake Braddocks success in recent years.

That's another tell tale sign. Look at a schools entire athletic program. If it sucks overall, there's a good chance they've been hurt by boundary lines. It's kinda messed up if you really examine it.

The Annandale/Woodson example cuts against your claim, at least when it comes to football. Annandale beats Woodson fairly consistently in football. I saw Annandale play Centreville last year, and they gave Centreville all kinds of fits. They were also fairly competitive v. So Co in the playoffs, at least through the first three quarters. Their coaching staff does wonders with a limited talent pool

Woodson is good at hoops, but I'm not sold on them when it comes to football They made last year's playoffs thanks to a gift-wrapped win against West Springfield.

If there were no football, would ANY sports program survive ? Football gate sales and sponsorships probably account for 75% of any schools booster revenue. An elite basketball school MIGHT be able to compete.

Not to mention the raw manpower they have for fundraisers. Just wait till August when entire teams are knocking door to door or begging for money on the street like homeless people.

Well yea there is going to be some outliers. Annandale is a football school. Always has been always will be. They've had like 5 head coaches since the school opened. They struggled a little when Adams retired but it seems Mike Scott now has them back on track. Go to a game. They still polish their helmets, wear black cleats, and they play college fight songs for warm ups instead of that rap crap. It's rich in tradition.

Same thing with Lee in softball. For some reason they always seem to be competitive. Even with much larger schools. In fact they just beat Westfield recently. They have kids move on to play at the next level. It's the culture of the program that has been created.

Same thing can be said for Wakefield in Basketball.

But look at the overall sports program of all of those schools and what do you notice? You can throw in Stuart and Falls Church as well. It's crappy. Simply put. It comes down to the demographics that the redistricting has done. Parents that aren't involved because of working late or unusual hours and kids that don't play sports until they get to high school. Caucasian and African American kids beat Middle Eastern, Asian, and Hispanic kids at football ten times out of ten. And it's not their fault. Just the culture of their environment. It could change in the future , but it's not happening anytime soon

I just think for all the bullshit that Fairfax County talks about "fairness" and "diversity" it all becomes evident when you look at the success of sports programs. White parents don't want their kids in these lackluster schools. Plain and simple. And you can't tell me sitting on a booster board at a West Springfield or a Lake Braddock or a Westfield that they don't have the power to draw the district lines so Tommy doesn't have to go somewhere he won't be successful.

Just my two cents.

(1) Annandale, rich in tradition? LOL.

(2) Middle Eastern, Asian, and Hispanic kids and football…sorry to be the one to tell you, but they don't play football in those countries.

(3) Booster boards don't have the power to draw school boundaries.

(4) White parents? I did not realize cross burning was now part of the FCPS curriculum.

(5) There are other forms of success in school besides playing football, basketball, and baseball.

It shouldn't really be an excuse for Oakton cause Westfield lost more kids than them since 2007. Infact Westfield's population is down by almost 700 but they are still dominant.

Sorry but this is just as laughable, if not more so, than saying Annandale always has been and will be a football powerhouse (not that their coaches don't to a good job with what they have).

I've had daughters playing softball for several years and nobody talks about Lee being any good at softball, the better softball schools in that part of the county are LB, SoCo and Hayfield. Westfield hasen't had any decent softball talent for at least the last 3-4 years so Lee beating them doesn't mean much.

Who was a better player in their high school days? Evan Royster or AJ Turner. Turner was a dominant player who led Centreville to 3 straight state championship games, meanwhile Evan Royster only led Westfield to 1. However, he rushed for over 6000 yards in 3 years at and 8.5 ypc while also scoring 60 touchdowns in his last two years combined. And while we are at it, which team was better in your opinion. Westfield '03 or Centreville '13?

That's more than a quick question.

Your stats are somewhat incorrect. Centreville played in the 2013 (win) and 2014 (loss) state championship games. They did not make it in 2012 and Turner was not a significant contributor the Centreville 2011 state runner-up team.

I would say objectively Royster was a better high school player. Turner's stats pale in comparison to Royster. Other than Royster's sophomore season, Turner had a better supporting cast and AJ did not play most of his senior year.

Wesfield '03 vs. Centreville '13 is very close I think. I would go with Westfield by a slim margin.

10 of their 14 wins were against teams that finished with records of .500 or better and three of them - Robinson, Hylton and Landstown - suffered their only losses of the season against Westfield. Westfield's playoff opponents were 43-7.

8 of Centreville's 15 wins came against opponents that had .500 or better records. Centreville's playoff opponents were 47-18.

1. Westfield looks dangerous returning Frimpong on the outside. Lots of depth and great coaching helps them

2.Robinson typical physical Robinson team. Will be hard to stop.QB Alex Miller is a 3-year starter

3. Centreville returns QB Jameel siler and several other athletes. Siler can take them back to playoffs.

4. Chantilly. Lots of coaches stepped down. Miles is off to Freedom (5A). Defense will suffer as well as offense. TE Corey Thomas can hopefully keep them from tanking on offense being the only returning skill position starter.

5. Oakton No QB, but a good enough line with Banbury and Forster. 3 Great linemen for them. Will sorely miss bacon and beale.

6. Herndon will struggle to win 3 games this season.

Chantilly has no guaranteed wins this season. Woodson had some young players last year. That was not a blowout win for Lalli.

I got Chantilly squeaking through that W.

Oakton Game will be huge for them. Playing at Oakton will be a great watch. Tilly always plays their best game of the season vs oakton. Tilly takes that W.

Lee Game. Football was not meant for Lee HS. Tilly W.

Herndon will struggle for sure. Tilly W.

Tilly only would have 4 wins, IF LUCKY!!!

if they dont make the playoffs lalli is gone.

Thomas is the only weapon for their offense next year. They will be returning a few linemen though... tilly will struggle.

1. Lake Braddock

Atkins, Park, and RB/DB Mansaray headline a loaded class. Have heard about losing the Westfield game their whole carears. Maybe this year it changes. Defense will be solid again as they look to make another run.

2. South County

Lost plenty of seniors to last years Regional Finalist team but look for them to pick up where they left off.Spalding and QB/WR Michael Salsibury will lead the way on offense. On defense their anchored by LB Eric Nabinett and DB/WR Nate Avery. Pannoni will have them ready to play.

3. West Springfield

Program has been resurgent under 3 year coach Jason Eldridge. Musket returns as a senior and can will them to victory. He will have 6'3 target Daniel Adu at WR. Look for them to make a playoff run this year.

4. West Potomac

Always have talent but need to take the next step. Return QB Mark Ellis and RBs Justin Annan and Daiimon Cleveland. LB Erik Roach leads the way on defense.

5. Annandale

Back to back playoff appearances has Annandale on the rise. They're led by senior RB Jalen Jackson and LB Malik Moten. Play Centreville away in a key metric game.

6. Woodson

Snuck into the playoffs with an impressive victory against West Springfield. Up tempo offense can keep them in the game with most teams.

7. T.C. Williams

1st year coach James Longerbeam from Florida will look to return the historic school to greatness. Tough conference schedule will present a challenge in making the playoffs.

8. Mount Vernon

Will also have a first year head coach. Have a couple of talented players but Mcgriggs is gone to Villanova. Poor coaching and leadership has M.V. as the doormat in Conference 7.

The VHSL is going to Follow Suit with the NFL and eliminate all CHOP/CUT Blocks so Robinson Automatically Falls Below Chantilly In the Conference 5 Rankings.

Oakton Moves up above Robinson as Forrester Moves to QB and Banbury to RB because we all know, what good is a great Line when you have Zero Skilled Players.

Chantilly, well TE Corey Thomas is going to Wear a Jersey Numbered #1 - #11 and take the Field By himself, then half the #'s are going to fall off his uniform and he will quit, well because 1 - mediocre TE cant do it all.

Herndon, well they will stay at the Bottom of the Conference because the only athletes they consistently have are Basketball or Soccer Players and do the math, it takes a whole lot of 1 and 2 point goals to make a TD.

Centreville, Rumor has it they recruited half the Guys that brought the Mulch up from Carolina for their Mulch Sale so they automatically Jump back to the Top of Conf. 5. Look forward to seeing them replenish the college ranks again.

Westfield, are we Really going with they Look Dangerous with Frimpong on the outside, I believe he had 9 targets all last year and Dropped 6. their only hope is Scanlon gets a Medical Redshirt and Comes back for a 7th year.

The NFL got rid of chop blocks, not cut blocks. Chop blocks have been illegal in HS since the 70's. Sounds like the guys at Robinson know the rules much better than you do.

"Westfield Football has promoted Mike Giancola, 2006 Westfield graduate, to Defensive Coordinator for the 2016 season."

He was the defensive play caller last season so it makes sense.

Promoting Giancola doesn't make sense it's seems obligatory...he is the Side-line leader during Games and so much more during practice...he's gonna be hard to replace and not near as effective from the booth..I get it..just don't think at this point it is the right move...will be interested in who takes over Giancolas role(s)

I have to disagree with your choice of Westfield 03 team being better than Centreville 13. I am obviously bias considering my name, but I watched both of those teams along with football here in Nova since the 70's. There has not been a better team than the Centreville 13 team that I have seen EVER in this area. That team dominated every team they played and could have set records that may never have been broken. If Haddock had not called off the dogs at half and had a Lake Braddock mindset, they would have set Offensive and Defensive records that would be mind blowing. The beat every team they played by a minimum of 3 touchdowns and again had the second and third teams playing the second half of most games.

In the playoffs they continued there dominance beating every team they played easily including the then #8 team in the country Oscar Smith handily in the Championship. The 03 Westfield team was unbelievable but did do not dominate like the 13 Centreville team.

That grapevine post was from February 1. Kinda hard to read someone's twitter feed 2 months into the future.

Baller, I saw a passing game on E-BAY for $199.99, install that and you might finish 8-2, otherwise your not making it out of the 2nd round!

If you are talking about 6A North, I would agree this is the proper top ten list, and yes, Madison and South Lakes belong on this list. Keep in mind that there are only 27 6A North teams, so being #10 isn't really that high of a rank; it's almost in the middle.

If you don't think they belong, then who would you replace them with?

Identifying a "top ten" is kind of arbitrary. I would instead divide it into (a) teams that are locks for the playoffs, (b) teams that are playoff bubble teams, and (c) teams that likely won't make the playoffs.

Here's how I see it based on each individual conference

Conference 5: Westfield, Centreville and Robo are locks for the playoffs. Chantilly and Oakton are bubble teams, but at the top end of the bubble. Herndon would fit into category (c).

Conference 6: I agree that South Lakes and Madison are the top two teams, and locks for the playoffs. I would put McLean, WL and Yorktown in category (c). I look for Hayfield to take a step back, but for Langley and Fairfax to be improved, which makes all three of these teams playoff bubble teams.

Conference 7: LB, Soco, West Springfield and West Potomac are locks for the playoffs. Annandale and Woodson are playoff bubble teams. TCW and Mt. Vernon are likely out.

Conference 8: Battlefield is a lock. Patriot is a bubble team. Stonewall Jackson, Osborne, and Osborne Part are likely out.

So the same results as last year save W and L ? No way. W and L has got something going on with Shapiro. They have like 3 consecutive playoff appearances under him. Madison and Chantilly will be garbage next year. Both teams lost all region QBbs and 90 percent of their offensive production. Patriot is in and I think one of the Osbourne schools is a bubble team.

We'll see. It's certainly fun to speculate and my guess is as good as any. Here's my rationale for WL, Chantilly and Madison

WL is one of the best coached teams I've seen, but they have issues getting enough kids to come out. I believe they dressed fewer than 40 kids for varsity last year, while most teams dress around 50. Depth can be an issue. Also, their team last year was heavy on Seniors. I think they are losing their entire O line, and Espinoza, who contributed on both sides of the ball. Their lower level teams were bad. So, even though they have a good coach who gets a lot out of the talent he has, I think they will struggle for reasons of inexperience and depth.

It's hard to count Chantilly out because they are in Concorde, and I think they will finish 5th place this year, but that may not matter, as Concorde usually gets 5 teams in the playoffs.

Madison is losing a lot, but their lower level programs performed well, so I think they can replace what they lost. They did win Conference 6 and had a 9-1 record. I think the reasons you mention will be the reason they don't win Conference 6 (I think South Lakes is the Conference 6 favorite), but I think they'll get enough wins to get them in.

Like I said, it’s very close in my mind. My criteria for evaluation was strength of schedule and I think by all objective standards (RPI, etc.) Westfield had a more difficult strength of schedule. Their last 3 playoff opponents were undefeated when Westfield played them.

Robinson, 11-0, had won 2 of the previous 6 state championships (1997 and 2001).

Hylton, 12-0, were the defending state champions, had reached the state semis for the sixth consecutive year and had won 3 of the last 5 state championships (1998, 1999, 2002): and Westfield handed them their first home field playoff loss in school history.

Landstown, 13-0, would go on to win the 2004 state championship.

By comparison, Centreville was playing against the likes of South Lakes (5-5), South County (9-2, who actually ran up a 21-0 nothing lead before folding) and Stonewall Jackson (8-4) before playing twice defeated Westfield (11-2) and ultimately undefeated Oscar Smith (14-0, but playing a freshman QB that was not ready for a game of this caliber).

Braddock gets too much credit once again. How can Robinson be ahead of Soco, they have zero offense!! What makes Battlefield so good? List is a bit off if you ask me.

Westfield
Soco
LB
Robinson
Battlefield
West Springfield
Centreville
Chantilly
West Po
Oakton

Once again, Robinson is not good!!

Both Braddock and Robinson out-played South County, but didn't get it done when it mattered. Robinson went up and down the field against SOCO but couldn't get in the endzone. If they don't throw a pick six they still win the game even with the redzone issues.
SOCO has the more talent than most, but they never live up to their potential.
