Gov't Shutdown Sob Stories - Give me a break

Halved paychecks force the furloughed to slash expenses and take loans, second jobs - WaPo

...“We have no income coming into the house right now, but the bills haven’t stopped,” said John Ferris of Falls Church. He is in a two-furlough marriage; both he and his wife, Lena, are locked out of jobs at the Environmental Protection Agency. With both of their paychecks dwindling, the family of six has put a scalpel to the household budget.

They’ve cut out restaurants and expensive groceries. Gone are the motel stays at their kids travel softball tournaments; instead, they drive all night. But the most painful cut has been a furlough of their own, laying off their autistic son’s longtime reading specialist."

Boohoo, these folks live in a 750K house in Falls Church, and are crying about having to cut back on their private tutors and weekends away. Are they for real? The folks in fly-over country probably can only dream about owning a house like that, or being able to afford private tutors. This while they know they will get back pay when it's all over. Talk about disconnected from reality.

My favorite line in the article is "I’m the kind of guy who really would be up every night worried about how to pay the mortgage,” John Ferris said"

So you live your life so that one missed paycheck is the end of the world? These are the people telling citizens how to live THEIR lives?

Theyre probably like most people in McMansions in NOVA. Spent every dime and then some to get their giant house and now live like beggars on maxed out credit cards.

One week without a paycheck shouldnt even be noticable if you have some common sense and have some savings.

I Know a couple who live like this. They literally freak when gas goes up 5 cents a gallon!

I think I'd be living on ramen before I stopped paying for a reading specialist. 'Sorry kid, got rid of your tutor, but we can still spend the gas on softball. Take it up with Obama.'

Yeh, cut out the special tutor so you can drive all night to a softball game, a travel softball game, not a school sponsored one. Great priorities. Perhaps you should have been up all night thinking about the mortage long before this furlough.

Actually, a quick google shows the tax assessment (lower than actual value) of $819,000.

Here's a clue: wait, these people are too stupid for clues, yet they're somehow in charge of the rest of us.

Wow.

Why should they be furloughed and not the Pentagon? The current wars are offensive wars. They're not for the defense of the nation. Let them all be subject to the budget scalpel.

Seriously? Here's a clue, jackwagons - move to a lesser house, sell off a bunch of toys, and build a future. Don't rely on my taxes being there for you forever, m'kay?

This particular family appears to be the victim of their own stupidity (including not being able to keep their pants on) but for government employees in this area in their mid-20s who are just starting out... Unless they don't drink, always clip coupons, drive an old paid-off car, etc, this is probably going to be rough for them the next couple of weeks.

But I have an RV and vacations and I have to drive my children to their sports events and I have nothing saved. My one non-sports child will have to go without their special tutor I guess, oh well. New kitchen is going in this week too. I can't afford to live like this!

Federal Employees used to be a much more sympathetic bunch when they were referred to as "Civil Servants", most likely had served in the military(probably a war vet), used GI benefits to leverage a college education, got a government job after graduating which paid less than the private sector equivalent.

By the way, furloughed federal workers are not being paid, and neither are many who have been deemed essential and who are in fact working.

And the private sector still pays more than the public sector for comparable work. About 18-22% more on average. They just pass those higher up-front costs on to the stiffs they call "consumers". Can't have that sort of thing eating into corporate profits, after all. Stock price might fall (GASP!).

Oh, and it's only those who actually make $50K per year who think that $300K per year would put them on easy street. Until you get into the mega-millions, rich is always about twice what you actually make. Except of course that it really isn't. Ask some of these whiny-ass doctors.

Lastly, the home pictured above is indeed 6706 Osborn Street in Falls Church which is nowhere near the fucking W&OD. It's tucked back off the FC-side of Great Falls Street just north of where that crosses 66. Fucking idiots.

Actually, I live within walking distance of the Ferris' home in a similarly appraised Falls Church City home. The only difference, is that I have enough liquid cash to pay my mortgage for more than a year.

CLASS ENVY is actually what landed the Ferris family in this predicament. Had they purchased a much more affordable home based upon their limited income potential, they would not find themselves living paycheck to paycheck. It would only take about $40K to have a sufficient reserve to pay the mortgage for a year. If you can't have that amount liquid and readily accessible at the drop of a hat, you have no business living in a $800,000+ house.

Of course, because you live in mom's basement, you wouldn't know anything about all of this.

Some people will actually get checks starting tomorrow. The point here is, if you save and live within your means, then there would be money to cover events like this.

Except the Ferris' live in the City of Falls Church on a street paralleling the W&OD. Look at the Facebook Page. The one kid has on a GMHS shirt. If they lived on Osborn, they'd be going to McLean HS.

They are getting paid for the work done BEFORE the shutdown. Also, it's important to remember, that not ALL government workers are morons who waste our tax dollars. Some of them actually help keep this country safe. Tired of all the ignorant, winey pussies on this site.

We are living off our emergency account - that is what it is there for. But it wont last forever. We keep 2.5 months expenses in an emergency account. Not sure what it is accomplishing other than us cutting back on just about everything. Why are we going through this? I feel really bad for some govt. contractors that have to make payroll or simply lay people off. Why is this happening?

What impact will this have no foreclosures, on home prices, on small businesses. It cannot be good so why is Congress refusing to vote on the budget?

My dad is a 100% disabled Vetran (wounded in combat, Silver Star, Purple Heart) his benefits will not get to him if this goes on for another couple weeks. What does that accomplish? I really do not understand

"Not sure what it is accomplishing"

Paying bills, buying food for starters?

This is obviously a shock, but most people (despite the entertainment industry's efforts) realize that income can be variable, and have at least some sort of, even if marginal, understanding of how to handle change.

As others have pointed out in other threads - "shutdowns" are neither new nor uncommon. If they're a surprise, well...

We are paying our bills. We saved and had a cash emergency fund for 2.5 months expenses. Are you saying we dont know how to handle money? That seems pretty good for this area. How is this govt closure paying bills and buying food.?

So your understanding is when the VA furloughs 7000 workers they will still get their benefits? How - the benefit fairies will send the checks out? The va warned this will happen. If you were informed you would know.

By what logic would closing the VA mean the polar oppisite of delays in benefit payment? Since you seem very ill informed you can watch this http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-505263_162-57606842/millions-of-veterans-benefits-$6b-worth-at-stake-if-govt-shutdown-continues/

Government worker here(GS14/8). I have not complained about the shutdown and loss of income. It sucks but I have not complained.

I live well well well below my means. Simple 1000 sq. ft. townhouse which has been paid off. No elaborate toys to boost my ego. I do have one hobby which is not too expensive even though there are times when it does get expensive(airfare/hotels).

I have set a budget for what my expenses are each month/quarter and then write a check in January to pay those bills in full for the year. If a bill comes up short because of increases here and there then I pay those when the bill says I have a payment to do. Honestly, all my bills for the year come to just under $5500 and I am talking about electric, cable/internet, water, hoa, car insurance, property/real estate taxes, ira investment, etc, etc. It is amazing to see how much money really leaves your wallet/purse when you really look at everything that you have to spend money for.

Of course this is very easy for me because I'm SINGLE!!!!! Family, well that would be a bit different but I agree with some of the posts above that some of these people have gone way overboard on their expenses especially the ones with a family.

You're an embarassment to NoVa. You must ditch your current car and lease a 5 series, then haul a$$ over to the iSomething store and put several iGadgets on your credit card (what, you don't have at least 4 CCs? Slacker!!).
Get home, and sign up for bottled water delivery, FIOS, full HBO/Everything package, log onto home delivery from Giant.

Swing and a fucking miss, asswipe. It's back to the bush leagues for you. I'm approaching 70 years of age and live in a seven-figure home in a seven-figure neighborhood that actually is near the W&OD and already was when the trains still ran on it. Rest assured that we are all millionaires here some number of times over. Might very well be able to buy and sell your sorry ass at the stroke of a pen, so mind your impudent little tongue, boyfriend.

Meanwhile, it has been supposed above that the Ferris family has annual salary totalling $293K. Even disregarding such other income as they all but certainly have and assuming that they were not able to do any better than 4.5% on a 30-year fixed-rate mortgage, they could comfortably afford a home costing as much as $1.5 million.

Everyone of course budgets cashflow, even paranoid asshats who regularly receive messages warning of impending doom from one of the outer planets. It would appear that the Ferris's are not among that barf-brained group, but their sudden shutdown-induced biweekly loss of better than $7000 worth of cashflow will have to be made up from somewhere. Mr. Ferris has taken a loan from his TSP to cover two months worth of the mortgage, so they'll be fine on that front for at least that long, but most federal workers do not make nearly the salaries that the Ferris's do, and they don't have all these comfy resources to fall back on. We've got single Mom's paying for child care they don't presently need out of income they don't presently have just so that they don't lose their spots. They and their kids still have to eat somehow of course. We've got paycheck-topaycheck late 20- and early 30-somethings with next to no disposable income left after making student loan payments who have been living in tenement conditions but will soon not be able to afford even that. We've got ordinary families needing to call up their utility companies and plead that they be allowed to skip their payment this month. Those are the sorts of stresses and challenges that the Post article is talking about. All that you are talking about has so far amounted to total misanthropic asshat nonsense and exactly nothing more. If you'd move a little closer here, I could pee on you, which is all that you and the rest of these hopeless morons and fucktards actually deserve.

Yes we do know what our emergency fund is for but thank you for pointing it out. What I meant was I dont understand what the furlough is accomplishing.

Since we do have a reserve it should be obvious to you we do not spend every cent we have. But things like 500 dollar trips to the dentist (multiple kids and yes that is after insurance) had to be cancelled. I had a medical proceedure that I cancelled as that would have been hundreds after insurance. Those are not luxuries in my opinion but we wont take services we cannot pay for so we cancelled them. Is it conservative of us to do this - yes. If we can stretch our emergency fund to last 3 months we hope to.

Why would congress think that this was a good way to defund the Affordable Care Act - its self funded and was not effected by the furlough. what is the game plan here by our representatives?

Not taking anything away from your Dad, but I have run into too many 'disabled' veterans around here who are just working the angle. I had someone joking to me how he was disabled due to loss of range of motion in one finger, and was pursuing government contracts with that status. I know another 'disabled' veteran that went on to play a pro sport. Disability has just become just one more con. Sadly, that takes away from the people who are profoundly disabled. I wonder how the guy in the wheelchair feels when he gets trampled by the guys with the torn ACL's who are also 'disabled'.

Yeah, 2.5 months is pretty tight unless you just bought a house last month. The average smart families around here probably have at least 1 - 2 years of liquid savings.

I don't make that much and have about 1 - 2 years in savings.

Savings - $60,000

Mortgage - $1,350
Utilities - $250
Food, insurance, gas, and other misc - $800
Total : $2,400 a month ~

That would last me about 2 years I assuming made 0.00 during the 2 years.

You'll have to do better, asswipe. Other asswipes have listed the Osborn Street address above from official sources. Against that, we have the say-so of a dull-brained misanthropic incompetent. Put up or shut up.

Yeah, a few dipshits that were morons. (Hey, that's like you!). Do you know how to perform real estate record searches, or is that beyond your skill set? Again, they live in the City of Falls Church. Osborn isn't in the city.

The 2.5 months is our liquid emergency fund. We have other savings we can draw on if we need to that would last much longer. You obviously do not provide for kids on that budget. Also you might note that your health ins costs would double under COBRA so you might want to add a few hundred dollars to your expenses each month. Also I didnt see any home maintenance fund - at that mortgage amount you certainly are not living in a new home so you should probably be putting away 200-300 dollars each month for home repairs and maintenance.

Oh and if you expect us to believe you 200 dollars a week for food, gas, clothing, car insurance, car upkeep, cable, internet, health insurance, dental costs in this area you are full of it.

Oppsies and LOL! are both kind of right, at least on the "where do they live" question...

Using street names mentioned above in various posts, according to the city of Falls Church tax records, there is a property on Railroad Ave., within the city limits of Falls Church, that is listed as being owned by the "Ferris Family Trust"; interestingly, the owners mailing address in the tax records is the Osborn Street address (in the unincorporated portion of Fairfax County that has a Falls Church mailing address) that is used in several posts above. According to Fairfax County tax records, this Osborn Street property has been owned by the same individual (with different first & last names than anyone in the WaPo article) since 2002.

It's a shame that an article like this is going to overshadow who is actually suffering from this shutdown. While furloughed employees will likely get back pay, and essential employees(who aren't getting a check right now but still working) will get all their pay eventually, those that are laid off and furloughed from contractors will get nothing.
I can speak from the essential employee perspective, which is that in my household we still go to work every day, but after the half-check which comes next, there will be no pay for who knows how long. Like most younger families in the area, we have to spend over 2K each month on daycare (to go to work) and close to that for our old townhouse. We still have college loans and car payments (for older used cars). We have managed to maintain an emergency fund of about 2 months of bills, but after that we are going to have to borrow. We don't live lavishly and stick to a tight budget and don't carry credit card debt. But if this drags on for more than 2 months, we will have that debt (at least until pay comes back). I'm trying not to complain, because at least we know that we will, eventually, get our pay and catch back up (and replenish our emergency fund), but some in this area won't. So the panic about how to pay the bills for the time being that we are experiencing (like I said we are only good for about 2 months) must be amplified for those that don't know when the next check will come and know that they will never recover that lost pay. Of all the stories to highlight, a real family should have been chosen. Not one that plays travel sports (something my kids will probably never do because of the expense involved), one that lives in an 800K house (one that I could never dream of owning), one that eats out a lot (something that is a rarity in my house), etc.

But aren't you worried? It's been two weeks and bills are due typically once a month. By that estimation you should be eating catfood and living in a cardboard box by now.

Clearly above your pay grade. These are high level positions that would typically be responsible for implementing and assuring the integrity and efficient operation of such complex records control and management systems as are necessary at such large agencies as EPA, all the while keeping them in compliance with federal law regarding the retention and disposal of official records. Not a job for the incompetent.

We have other savings we can draw on if we need to that would last much longer - good. And yeah I do not have kids, helps a ton.

Oh and if you expect us to believe you 200 dollars a week for food, gas, clothing, car insurance, car upkeep, cable, internet, health insurance, dental costs in this area you are full of it.
-------------------------

Cable, and internet went into the utilities cost of - $250

Gas, car insurance, car upkeep - 2008 accord paid in full, I pay $120 every month in gas, $10 a month in upkeep, and $70 a month for insurance. So we are at $200 for the car, this is a big one. If I didn't have to work my gas usage would be a lot lower, around $80 a month.

Clothes, Food, and health insurance - Clothes, I spend maybe $40 a month. If I lost my job I really doubt my insurance would double in cost. (Couldn't I get medicaid or do my assets disqualify me?) I will play a long and say $200 even though I pay less now. Now Groceries, $360 a month can be done, of course you can't be eating out or shopping at MoMs and Whole foods. - $600

House maintenance - Yes its an older home, but everything is updated and is built much sturdier then the Mcmansions built in the past 20 years. $50 a month in maintenance, I do as much as I can myself which helps a lot.

Primary Savings - $60,000

Mortgage - $1,350
Utilities - $250
Food, insurance, gas, and other misc - $900
Total : $2,500 a month ~

Not to state the obvious, but $10 for car upkeep? That's like 2 oil changes a year and apparently you don't need new brakes or tires ever. The average car maintenance I believe is on the order of $1500/yr. Same goes for medical, apparently you think that having insurance means there are no other costs. I have very good insurance and I still spend a lot for copays for my family each each.
Finally, $600/yr in house maintenance is unlikely to keep you up to speed over the live of your house. Even doing your own work, painting, repairs, roof work, etc... costs a lot.

Sure we should all have 6 months of income in an emergency fund if we are to lose our job, but facts are that most people do not. And despite some people thinking that this is because people are lazy or live beyond their means, the facts are that most people have had stagnate incomes for decades while prices have gone up.

I work for a high-end retailer-one of those you see in Tysons Galleria (in the corporate financial office) and these gov't workers are still having no problem dropping 3-4-5k+ on expensive custom items....my only pet peeve is I can't get them to answer my phone calls since they can't check their voicemails!!!

But yeah, bottom line is these workers are FAR from hurting. Everyday I am seeing AT LEAST 15+ orders for stuff that needs to be shipped to the various military bases and government facilities in this area. Let's just say the least expensive item we have is $100 and UP....they have PLENTY of time to sit on their ass and shop that's for sure!!!! I guess since they know they're getting back pay they're burning up those Visas and Mastercards!!

They are relatively new in their modern form (in their previous form, they were mostly just ignored), dating only from a Justice Department ruling in 1980. Prior to this one, the only shutdowns since that have lasted as long as a full day were the 1995 and 1995-96 Gingrich shutdowns. If that's a surprise, well...

Yes the real word has spoken, but has said nothing.

The point is that these sob stories are BULL.

Like I said, if you are too stupid to know how to use real estate search databases, it is pointless.

Go here:

On the drop down for street use Railroad.

Let us know what you get, chump.

Probably not as their home is assessed at $835K, which really makes it sad that they don't have a dime in savings to pay the mortgage. I can go 15 months without a paycheck and not have to touch any of my other investments. How can these people not go two weeks?

The average car maintenance I believe is on the order of $1500/yr.

Yeah maybe if you have Land Rover or BMW

I will base this off 10k - 12k miles per year

Oil changes, yes 2 times per year - $40 per change (Valvoline Synpower Synthetic 5 qt + Fram extra Guard $32.99 or $36.99 with K&N filter)

Brake pads - $55 every 3 - 4 years

Tires - $300 Every 3 - 4 years

Fluid Flushes (coolant, brakes, tranny, etc) - Most of these you don't even need to change till about 60k+/5 years. - $50 annual average

Ok we will say about $20 per month.

-------
Same goes for medical, apparently you think that having insurance means there are no other costs. I have very good insurance and I still spend a lot for copays for my family each each.

Really, I don't pay much, but again I don't have kids.
---------
Finally, $600/yr in house maintenance is unlikely to keep you up to speed over the live of your house.

Depending on how old your windows, roof, ac, heater, etc are it probably will not. If you have a newer or updated home $50 a month will cover most essential maintenance costs for a couple years.

Ever go to the dentist or do you treat your mouth like your car and home? For most of us that is another $300 - $500 per year minimum. Chip a tooth or need a crown and you are out north of $500 for sure

In conclusion you really have no idea what your real costs are. If you are deferring all this upkeep you will pay a lot more in the long run and if your health, car, and house fail while unemployed you will lose a huge amount of your reserve. Despite living in a run down house with a soon to break down car and teeth on the way out you still do not have nearly as much a reserve as you think.

Yes, they are, though a great many other federal workers are not in that same cozy boat. The Ferris's have available resources to draw on and are in fact already fat-and-sassy on their mortgage for the the next two months should the shutdown go on that long, which it very well might. Your twisted imaginations of how poorly they must be doing these days are simply a product your own monstrously ignorant speculation. so you get cable, internet service, gas, trash service, electric and water all for $250 per month - nonesense

- Internet (roku for tv) $75
- Trash is through the county, gets included in the taxes with my mortgage.
- Water is usually around $70 - $100 per QUARTER
- Gas/Electric, Electricity is always cheap for me, up to $100 in the summer since I have a 17 seer AC and efficient appliances. Gas gets a little more expensive, up to $200 in the winter.

does your car have magic tires and parts that never wear out? $120 a year to maintain your car? Oh and you forgot about tolls, registration, personal property tax - those alone would triple your estimate and you would still never ever be able to repair your vehicle. What if you get in an accident (deductable) or do you ever pay for parking

- See previous post for estimated maintenance costs
- Property tax, I'm way too cheap to pay that. My car is registered to my investment property address. Tolls maybe $15 per year. Though If I lost my job and I would not be going on the toll road.
- If i got into an accident, well I would just have to suck it up and pay my $1,000 deductible. Don't see how this is a annual expense.

well since you are such a financial genius you may need an explaination. You see your employer most likely pays a large portion of your coverage- under COBRA the no longer subsidize your coverage. BTW not all employers are required to participate in COBRA

- oh cool, thanks for the info

$600 a year will pay for do it yourself lawn maintenance, and an interior paint job once every 5 years - nothing else. No broken windows, ac units going out, water heaters, plumbing, electric, windows, roof, new carpet or floor refinishing. You will essentially wear your house down and lose a lot of value. You have absolutely no capital fund for wear and tear. What about light bulbs, smoke detectors? Ever clean or replace your furniture - guess not

- While you are right you cannot do most of those things. Spending $600 a year for 2 years in an emergency scenario will not wear a house down to lose a lot of value. I can take care of my lawn, renovate a small bathroom(low end reno), and paint my house for $600.

- These are just rough estimates and only from my primary savings. I could live probably 4 - 5 years if I tapped into my investments. Don't get mad at me just because you can't make it 2 weeks.
- Should of gotten a honda, 2 oil changes a year keep them running like new for quite a long time.
- I don't need to call out Michael and Sons or Acclaimed (complete rip offs) every time something breaks. You can make $600 go pretty far if you do things your self and buy things on sale.

More interestingly perhaps, the property at 996 Raiload Street was sold by a realty LLC to the current owners for a whopping $360K in July 2012, 18 months after it was initially put on the market. A disaster sale picked up on the cheap as an investment property by some sharp-eyed trustee. Hence the legal mailing address being over on Osborn Street.

They aren't bull, and they multiplying and worsening by the day. And not just for federal workers, as has been pointed out. Thanks to the Moron-in-Chief from 2001 to 2009, this isn't exactly the cushiest economy ever anymore. A lot of lower-level feds and the small businesses that depend on them as customers are getting hurt. And the snowball has still just started.

Yes, I am a bit worried. Between paying my $1.5 million mortgage...private school for my 3 kids...car payments for my 2 BMW 7 series...I have to admit I'm a bit concerned. But thank God you douches are paying my salary!!! Damn it's nice to be paid while on vacation!!!!

Ok so maybe these people's sob story is a bit unreasonable, but there are plenty of other valuable programs which are not operating right now and it really sucks. The WaPo had a front page story earlier this week about some lady with cancer who could not attend a life saving treatment or something like that becuase it was at NIH and it's closed right now. If that was somebody related to me, I would be furious!
