Great point, thanks for the reminder.

I don't expect to see any "rider" monkeys dangerously weaving in and out of lanes during the entire month of May.

Why does everyone say that? I ride in the rain all of the time, the tires on the motorcycle are made for that, you have plenty of grip, The tires are not a problem, people act like the tires have no tread.
Motorcycle safety courses tell you to ride in all weather conditions and encourage you to ride in the rain.
They sell very expensive rain suits and plenty of rain gear for this also.
people in this area are fucking idiots.

Driver sought in fatal I-95 motorcycle crash

Posted: Apr 30, 2013 6:25 AM EDT
Updated: Apr 30, 2013 2:11 PM EDT
NEWINGTON, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say they are looking for a tractor trailer that struck a motorcyclist on northbound Interstate 95.

State Police say 68-year-old Timothy Halpin of Dumfries died after he apparently lost control of the motorcycle he was riding in the left lane and slid into the center lane about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday just before the Fairfax County Parkway. State Police say he was then struck by the tractor trailer, which didn't stop.

Investigators say witnesses were not able to provide a description of the tractor trailer and anyone with information is encouraged to call state police. State Police say it was raining at the time of the crash.

The main lanes of northbound I-95 were closed for about two hours following the accident.

You can have all the safety courses and very expensive rain gear your little heart desires. You tangle with an 18 Wheeler while riding a MC.....you are going to lose. And probably lose a few limbs.

Why on earth would a safety course ENCOURAGE you to ride your MC in the rain? I can understand teaching how to ride safely on wet roads.......but encourage it??? That's fucked!

I would like to know how he "lost control" on the highway. Was he a "squid" doing 100+mph or was he a poor sap just going work?

As safe as I ride and equip myself- I'll admit that even my $800 Aerostich armored gortex suit and $600 Arai helmet are no match for being run over by a semi... Glad they can't drive in the HOV lanes.

kinda why I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt on this one and thinking he just had a colossal fuck up

edit - and yeah, trucks CAN and DO ride in the HOV lanes. They arent allowed on them in the Hampton Roads area but up here they are except on the "parkway" part of 66 inside the beltway

It amazes me how every time a motorcycle is involved in an accident everyone assumes it's their fault. Some kid was killed at an intersection in Springfield a few years ago, was talking to someone about it and she went on and on about how he was driving super fast, like 80 in a 40 some. Only he wasn't. He was driving responsibly and the idiot soccer mom in her minivan never even saw him, even though he was wearing neon green, and she failed to yield when turning left. He died at the scene. But now, years later the community around the site, which has one of those stupid memorial markers, thinks it was his fault.

People are amazing.

Personally, I wouldn't ride a bike here in the suburbs if you paid me. Drivers around here are incredibly unaware and way too busy effing with their phones to actually drive. Some idiot in an SUV almost ran me off the road the other day. He 'waved' like he was sorry. Idiot shouldn't have a drivers license.

I don't get it. If the motorcycle lost control on its own and slid into another lane where the tractor trailer ran over him, the tractor trailer was not at fault. So why are they looking for information about the tractor trailer? The truck driver probably didn't even notice the small bump. It doesn't matter what the tractor trailer looked like.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist in cases like this to figure out what happened. And of course, the article posted yesterday evening confirmed what most of us thought originally.

Not acting like that at all. Read carefully much? :-)

The guy lost control (in the left lane) for, as of now, no known reason. This means he was, in all likelihood, driving dangerously -- maybe too fast for conditions, or not paying attention, or with bald tires, etc. Lots of possibilities. The same would be true of a car which suddenly "loses control".

It's certainly possible that something else happened, like some kind of failure of the bike itself or a rock in the road. But statistically, this is highly unlikely. This is why, as you'll note, I didn't say 100% above. I'm fair and balanced.

Long time area rider - what sucks about the roads when it rains is it brings up all the oil and crap from all the drivers who refuse to fix their shit.

Hydroplaning can be a bitch on a bike, too. Either one of those things could easily have been a factor in this crash.

So the guy was riding a Beemer 1200. Hmmm, I almost hit a rider like that about six months ago as he was coming off the HOV lanes onto I-395 just inside the city after the 14th Street Bridge. Just for the record, I was not texting or farting around with a GPS - I just didn't see him. He swerved out of the way, then started spazzing with all sort of hand motions and such. SORRY DUDE! Not like I was aiming for you, but after all, you are on a BIKE, and you are a lot smaller than a four-wheeled vehicle. I did NOT want to hit you, believe me.

Nothing against bikers at all - more power to you - but ride with the thought that you're probably going to be a lot harder to see than a car, and in thick traffic with lots of folks traveling at different speeds and changing lanes, you're >rolling the dice< if you're on two wheels. Hell, you're rolling the dice on four. So it goes back to the old saying, "He was right all along, and now he's dead right". Bikers, accept the challenge of being a not very well seen TARGET during rush hour, and don't complain if people don't see you. I'm a native of this area and a careful driver with a clean record, but even I make mistakes. If you're going to ride, then do so at your own risk and don't complain.

As for Halpin, God rest his soul and watch over him. We may never know what caused his bike to go down, but we do know that if he'd been on four wheels, he'd probably still be here. You ride - you risk - your choice.

Motorcyclist was asking for it!

Seriously, if you ride a motorcycle there is a 50% that you will get seriously injured.

Everybody who rides knows it is like rolling the dice. Break your face, arm, leg or die. It's part of the motorcycle way.

The May Safety Month thread has plenty of pics of bikers going out of their way to make themselves invisible to drivers in this area. Your link was somewhere in Idaho, where evidently the cyclists obey traffic laws.

Weighing your little Idaho PSA against ACTUAL PICS of crazy fucks around here trying to kill themselves and others... uh, let's see... I'll go with the eyewitness reports.

And no, no one wants to be the driver some rider around here causes to kill them.

eyewitness reports of what? WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?

dunno what's going on in yr head, but the PSA link I put up has nothing at all to do with the topic at hand other than the fact they both involve motorcycle crashes. Not say at all that's what happened in the I-95 accident if that's what you think I am suggesting. o_0

it's funny for two reasons

a) yr friends with a guy who killed someone on the roadway in a fistfight - http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/1180786.html - (real responsible driving there LoLz)
b) in the PSA, motorcyclist had FULL right of way and y'all still acting like the rider was at fault.

Got Hypocrisy? LoLz

No... but that's pretty funny. Unfortunately an aerostich is definitely not cool looking. If I wear it into the office because it's raining out, I get the "where's the fire" jokes, or "is that a space suit?". Don't care what I look like if it helps protect me sliding at 75mph on the highway. It'll handle that- just not getting run over by a truck. The "douch" above is obviously going for some fashion statement or attending a comi-con nerd fest.

What type of sentence do you think she'll get, and was she texting or talking on the phone?

A grand jury has indicted a Gainesville woman on reckless driving charges in connection to the accident that ended the life of Prince William County Police Officer Chris Yung. Margaret Luecke, 69, of Gainesville, was driving the Dodge Caravan that allegedly pulled out in front of Yung's motorcycle Dec. 31.

worse case she'll get 6 months suspended prolly, something like that. More than likely just a fine.

a while back old lady turned left onto Twinbrook , right infront of a road train - killed at least 2 maybe more. Same thing.

It's reckless driving - same as if I'm doing 45 in yr neighborhood.

This is what I try to convey to pedestrians and cyclists ALL THE TIME! That if I hit them with my car and kill them, this will be the worst that would happen to me - court and prolly a fine.

Watch and see what happens to grandma - you'll see.

Incredible that she didn't see the cop with his flashing lights on. It pretty much has to be a case of texting or other distracted driving. While I feel bad for her, since she has to live with the fact that her negligence took the life of another, I hope she spends some time incarcerated. Doubt it will happen. It's a shame.
