So, from June to April it's ok to run them over?

WNC supports Motorcycle Safety Month 100%...well, 1%, since we're 1%'ers, and also, because we just haul our bikes/rides/hogs on trailers to Kilroys and look at them in the parking lot...we actually don't ride them much at all...eww, they're noisy and you might burn your leg or something

Harley riders seem to think every month is motorcycle safety month. They insert themselves into my car with their deliberately loud bikes, making it difficult to have a conversation or hear my music.

It's like someone who has a huge car stereo who has it on ALL THE TIME. Do you like driving near them? Didn't think so.

June-April are actually "cager" safety months. The "riders" only get one month a year because they are lower-class citizens who aren't equal to us.

Harley's are made that way. There's some patented/propreitary engineering in them that makes them louder than the crotch rockets or other cruisers.

Harley's are loud because they are saying "Look at me! I wasted my money on an inferior brand and want to pretend to be a dirtbag!".

Harley's aren't inherently loud, Gayboy. The loud ones have after-market mufflers.

I really don't get the whole "watch out for motorcycles" thing. It's a waste of time because the cagers are -not- going to change their behavior and it makes the people saying it seem like a bunch of pussy bicyclists. "Ohh, we're vehicles too so you have to share the road with our slow moving pansy asses."

Fuck that. Drivers need to pull their heads out of their asses, period. I get cut off in my truck for more often than I ever do on my bike.

How can you miss them? A number of crotchrocket losers have been out since the weather has gotten warmer, up to their usual antics of riding between lanes of cars in slow or backed-up traffic, not signaling while flying between lanes, and on here bitchng that they can't be seen well enough while they ignore all civilized traffic behavior.

Whether the loudness is inherent or added after market, doesn't really matter that much. Either way, it seems that their owners want them to be louder. This just seems obnoxious to me, harming my quality of life because you want to be...what? I don't get it.

So I think it's douchebaggery.

Speaking of usual antics, I have -never- seen a motorcyclist split lanes in traffic except for cops with their lights flashing, and I drive for a living and am on the road all day every day so I'm reasonably certain that I would have seen it happening at some point in teh 20 years I've lived here. Yet I see you posting this same crap in every thread that is even slightly related to motorcycles.

Unless you can provide photographic or video evidence of this behavior, I say that you are a liar and I will make a point of calling you a liar in every thread I see you post.

Absolutely concur. Why bother? We've already determined that they're second-class citizens (only 1 month per year while the rest of us get 11); loud, obnoxious, lane-splitting attention whores; and basically apes -- so it's hardly worthwhile to "watch out" for them any more than you would watch out for anything else. I don't go out of my way to watch out for squirrels -- why would I do so for "riders"?

I don't need to provide any photographic evidence to some anon poster of what everyone (except apparently you) has seen, feel free to suck it. I saw it two days ago in the I-395 southbound HOV lanes. I see it there and occasionally on the Ffx County Parkway. Next time I see it I will save it off on my dash cam, but even if I post video you won't post back and apologize so it probably isn't worth the effort. I see it often enough that I roll my eyes when someone posts about looking out for riders because the crotch rocket assholes who do that are what immediately come to mind.

I don't see it very much at all. I've seen it a couple times by two-wheelers. I've also seen it by those three-wheelers, which was particularly bad.

I do hear them being obnoxiously loud regularly, though.

You may have noticed in your three weeks of driving that sometimes the unexpected happens. When we have no room for error in our driving experience, and the unexpected happens, people tend to get hurt. Having a decent amount of space between me and the car next to me gives us a buffer, breathing space, room for one of us to make a small mistake and correct it before someone is injured.

If there's a motorcycle there...that room for error is gone. And for what? So someone can get there a few minutes earlier? Not worth it.

Like I said before, I don't see it very much. Most motorcycle drivers are smart enough not to do it. Most are even nice enough not to intrude on my driving experience with their unnecesarily loud overcompensating for something exhaust systems. But it increases risk with no significant payoff for them to weave in and out of traffic on those rare occasions they do. If being on a bike is so dangerous you need to make yourself louder, then it's definitely too dangerous to be reducing the margin for error.

Of course, it is then also too dangerous for anyone to be doing it at all. Which just proves you don't need deliberately loud pipes.

Same could be said of drivers who run up the shoulder in a backup. I'm obvisouly not going to break the law by doing that so I'm not going anywhere. It doesn't hurt me if people do that.

Riders can't have it both ways... they complain drivers don't pay attention to where they are, but then ride up between vehicles where drivers would never expect a rider to be. The campaign might as well say "For safety's sake all drivers must be Spider Man this month so their spider sense will go off when we're not obeying traffic laws."

Except that on the whole, they don't. And even if they did, you'd have to prove that the same people who whine about not being seen are the EXACT same people who ride in the wrong places. You can't hold people responsible for the actions of others in their group solely because they're in the same group.

On the subject of safety and lane splitting, there is a lot of debate in highway safety circles on the subject and a strong case can be made that the motorcyclist faces a greater risk of being rearended while sitting in slow moving traffic than they do of being cut off while passing between slow moving cars.

There hasn't been a proper study of this, but what work as been done suggests that the real danger of lane splitting is not from drivers changing lanes into a bike they didn't see, but from drivers who see the bike and intentionally use their vehicle to commit assault with a deadly weapon.

ellis,

Per VA law it is not legal for two vehicles to be side by side in the same lane. Technically it's not even legal for two bikes to be side by side even when stopped at a light.

There was a recent bill being worked on that make it legal for 2-wheeled bikes to be side in the same lane but I haven't heard anything about it lately.

Just saying it works in california traffic. you are allowed to do it. it's not legal in va. so lane splitting is out. plus it would scare the shit out of me doing that in this area.

The real risk of being rear-ended is Wednesday night at Kilroy's.

so name the campaign "safe motorcyclist safety month". what you are arguing could be said for males walking wooded trails at night, lets have a safety campaign for them because we dont want to have to prove that they are not in the 10% out there at that time of night to rape someone

Oh and look a Suzuki idiot going 170mph. HAppened yesterday in NY but it can happen on any interstate where these idiots ride

http://www.wtop.com/681/2851102/Biker-clocked-going-170-mph-on-upstate-NY-highway

State police say a trooper first observed the motorcyclist going 166 mph Wednesday afternoon in the southbound lanes of Interstate 87 just south of Albany. The trooper pursued the biker and was able to get the Suzuki motorcycle's license plate number and a description of the rider when he slowed down in traffic.

But the man sped off again, and other troopers clocked him going as fast as 170 mph. Troopers eventually stopped him in New Paltz.

Yeah, because nobody ever drives too fast and loses control of their car, right?

Happened again this week, this pic is for the above anon poster who called me a liar. The rider ran up on me and the bus to the left of me, splitting the lane. Flow of traffic was 65mph, he was going at least 80. He proceeded to ride between the cars ahead until I couldn't see him anymore.

here is a pic I caught of one of these crazy fuckers on Friday, saw him ride the middle of the road between cars until he was too far away for me to see, all this was at around 70mph. Bikers saying they ride for safety around here is a joke, no wonder many sadly die.

A Washington Post article today detailed the antics of a group or riders on Rt 50 Saturday going 100 through traffic. This one didnt end too well, one rider became a bumper sticker on a Mercedes and then had his flaming cycle land on top of him. Hopefully the Mercedes owner can get something for his pain and suffering while just lawfully driving along.

Yeh, look out for bikers as they weave in and out of traffic. Watch out for them and read their minds when they don't use turn signals. Watch out for them packing their overweight woman on the back of the bike and underestimate how difficult it is to drive with someone back there. Watch out when the shirt and tie wonk gets his mid-life Harley and heads out on 66 without ever having been on a bike before and nearly kills himself every 2 miles.

May have been safety month for MCs but October is the month for watching obese middle aged men and their wives decked out in leather oufits waddle out to their cheesey looking bikes at every greasey spoon restaurant along the blue ridge parkway. Yes real men ride motorcyles, real fat men.

And another today... this one scared the crap out of me. We're in a line of cars creeping up on a merge point in DC, this asshole flew right between each car. The lane we're in has curbs on both sides and is designed for a single, one-way lane.

Sorry for the blur, but he was moving fast enough that the video still got what it got. All I heard was blaring music and then this shape flew out from my left, crossed in front and then took off down the right side of the lane. He'll be wormfood one day, I think Darwin is going to take care of this one just fine.

Nothng's worse than a "rider" blasting his faggy music. The other day I had the misfortune of being near some douche who was blaring "Hotel California". Seriously, who bumps that song? If you wanna show your appreciation for the classics, you play a deep cut... not the most over-played song in existence.

I wish we had a month for caged drivers. Maybe then we could highlight the constant uses of cellphones to make calls, text and general inattention to the roadway and traffic.

As a rider, and a caged driver, I see so many more people on their cellphones doing everything BUT driving when I'm on my bike. Of course because I have to pay more attention. I ride, by the law and am safety concious. I hope I continue to avoid this idiots, both on my bike and in my cage.
