Welcome back! Well I had predicted 24-14 so we're not far apart. I do think it could go from close to a rout in the 4th like the other CV playoff games.

Hope everyone gets there early. CV doesn't manage tickets very well and the ticket line was ridiculous last week, will be worse this week. Gates open at noon.

The line was horrible last week and if you were at the end, you missed much of the 1st Q. For what it's worth, they are pre-selling tickets in the cafeteria at Cville from 11:15-1:00 today (and yesterday) and I heard Westfield is doing the same thing. For this game, there will be an extra "exact change" line at the gate as well. Parking is going to be a big problem too, so early is a good idea.

Hey Centreville fans, get ready for a beat down on Saturday!!!!! The Westfield Bulldogs will win 56-12, NO DOUBT! Centreville is overrated on the defense (Chad Wiggins) and the Offense side of the ball.

WF 56 CVille 12
Westfield RB (Gray or T-W) 25-234 6 TD's
Westfield QB 6-7 100 2 TD

Centreville offense chokes; 150 yd's total offense

Cville is going HOME!

Please make a note for Saturday:

If you are going to watch the North Stafford/Briar Woods game it has been moved to John Champe High School due to the conditions of the field. Don't show up at the wrong high school, you will just feel awful.

Secondly, the Centreville/Westfield game is at 1:30 p.m. as had been agreed upon and reported all week. Just to shut the rumors down.

Also, the Altavista/Haysi game has been moved next door to the stadium belonging to the elementary school due to conditions with the field. In case you feel like a long fall drive...

Excuse me sir, but you are a fucking idiot. Such an idiot that it make me want to beat you so badly taht your face will resemble that of a derrange monkey. But sadly your face already looks that way. Turf drains pretty well, and the rain is supposed to stop by early morning. By game time the field might be a little slick with temps in the 40s. Not bad football weather. Should not impact either team in a huge way. Westfield will probably mostly run the ball anyway. If Centreville can shore up their run defense they should probably take this game 35-21.

I don't think Westfields D will give up more than 28, just my opinion. That's the most they gave up all year. They did a very good job shutting Lake Braddock's high powered offense down last week.

Because the coaches are God awful here. The Northern Virginia teams are absolutely terrible mostly because of the vanilla offenses they run. I would list Virgina in the bottom 10% in the country however, Virginia Beach is much better

SC football is all about O, for sure. Last year, Byrnes came to Chesapeake and ran away from O. Smith, 42-21. The thing that surprised me was how wide Byrnes' spread was and how often it ran from that set. Good O line and receivers that beat Smith to spots. Also saw the AAA title game--open Os that dictated. Even though it's mostly a power game here, Westield's Glennon is throwing in the NFL, Renner had a few good seasons as UNC's QB before injuries this year, and Stone Bridge's Burns is a freshman at Stanford. These Os can give small quick teams a better chance to beat bigger teams as WaPo pointed out today in the article re what Baylor's coach did in Texas high school FB.

Oakton runs a multiple set option offense with a ton of read option plays. They did not have a great season this year, but still ran the same things that have made them very successful the past few years. They started running that stuff in 2008 with Chris Coyer at QB. Last year Kyle Downer did it and they shocked everyone by winning the region for the 4th time (more than any other school in The northern region since 2002).

ESPNU has virginia ranked number 8 in high school football. Northern Va schools have produced more number 1 recruits in the country than the beach. Overall, it is pretty close for total college football players from each area. If you check out the numbers you will see how far off your opinions about VA football and their coaches really are.

For the first tine ever USA football and their heads up programs partnered with one school district in the country this year...FCPS. Why not Texas, or The 757?

Per capita FBS recruiting stats for 2008-2013 rank VA 16th and VA trails 9 states with schools in the SEC. LA, Alabama, FL and GA rank 1 through 4. Not saying this is THE indicator; it's just another factor to consider in assessing variances by state. In terms of gross numbers, CA, TX and FL still lead for what I'm told. www.footballstudyhall.com.

The partnership between USA Football and FCPS is driven by safety and the sheer numbers of youths and HS teams playing in the county. That was pointed out in press releases, etc., when the partnership was announced. There were already 1900 youth programs doing Heads Up and FC was a national leader in that. Neither Texas nor the 757 has the density we have and all 3 areas have D1 cred.

Congrats to Centreville. They played a nearly flawless game and powered their way past and over Westfield with a convincing win.

Surprised Westfield stuck with their usual plain vanilla offense almost every play of the entire game. WF went 3-out their first 4 possessions iirc. WF defense on the field seemed like nearly the entire game. TOP must have been like 32-16.

Walter vs. Scoville was in my mind the biggest difference between these two teams. WF QB not only can't throw - can't run either... averaged 1.8 ypc for the season.

Centreville's defense will have their work cut out for them - but if CF can hold OS to 17, well, I think Centreville can also.

Good Luck next week.

Ok I give, Centreville is a better team this year (but this year only). What peeves me though is the conservo way Westfield coaches running the game today. Of course Thrasher Walker out, of course the QB is not the greatest this year but there is no way we were going to beat Centreville without some spicing it up with trick plays or more Devon or something. Running up the middle right into Centreville linebackers everytime is not going to get it done.

Loosen it up boys next year.

I saw Smith in its opener and C'Ville today. Both teams have good lines and playmakers. C'Ville will win if its OL executes and its LBs make quick reads. Smith loves to test LBs--shows run then throws behind you or throws under and makes you chase. CF showed that you stop Smith with speed-to-ball and pressure; game today was 10-0 until the TD in the 4th. On D, Smith's focus is the LOS. It also better cheat up on #23; otherwise, he will make you miss. This is not 2011 and an easy win by either team would surprise me.

Congrats to Westfield for a good year that included beating a 12-0 team and hanging around today against a very tough state finalist.

Well hsfballfan here, as you can imagine happy as a cat. In fact here is a shout out to the boys from CVille, they did it 14-0 and on to states. Cue the speakers....

Back in black, I hit the sack
It's been too long I'm glad to be back
Yes I'm, let loose
From the noose
That's kept me hanging around
I keep looking at the sky
'Cause it's gettin' me high
Forget the hearse 'cause I'll never die
I got nine lives
Cats eyes
Usin' every one of them and running wild
'Cause I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back
Yes, I'm back
Well, I'm back, back
(Well) I'm back in black
Yes, I'm back in black
AC/DC - Back In Black Lyrics

Now on to more serious analysis. Indeed the game went as most people expected. In fact I remember saying 28-14. Always better to be a bit conservative so am fine with the 35-14 final. Random thoughts:

* Defense came back ready to play today. Only two plays concerned me for Wfield offense the entire game....great throw and catch to Burns down at the 1 and then the run around the left end for a TD that was in reality a missed assignment by Centreville defense.
* I respect Westfield. Of course big rivals and great to beat them but good job yelling "USA USA" Westfield fans when the old timer veteran came golf carting around the track. Also good job playing a disciplined, tough ball game.
* I think Centreville is a superior team but I would not say vastly superior. Agree with previous poster newgatedenizen that big difference in QB play between the two teams. Plus aggressive defense just kept Westfield from sustaining much all day long. Also have to shout out to Taylor Boose. I know that Turner and Tutt get a lot of press (and deservedly so) but that kid Boose is da bomb. Great strength and agility.
* Centreville fans and especially the students. Good job coming out of hibernation with the blue out and the balloons. You are on your way to being a real great cheer section but please turn out next week too.
* I know there has been a bunch of pooh poohing about Fairfax County and the turf fields. But that is a bunch of bullshit. Can you imagine this and other games being played on a muddy December field instead of on the turf? I did not see one player slip or anything even given the terrible weather yesterday.
* Overall a good crowd turnout but a bit surprised to see about a third to half of the visitors side open. Thought Westfield traveled a bit better than that especially being so close and given the rivalry? But I also wonder if the third party (other teams and coaches) attendance was down given the loss by Braddock (i.e., people expected Centreville to win without Braddock involved so why show up....)
* Another point there, I think Centreville should be really commended because the hardest way to win is having the pressure that everyone expects it. People have been expecting this result since the beginning and lo and behold they delivered it. Congratulations.
* Next week against Smith. I think the pressure is off now. People expect Smith to win so if I am Haddock I just tell them to roll the dice and see what happens.
* Hope Tutt is not too hurt, noticed he did not play the last half.

In sum, congrats Wildcats, savor the victory, and let us see if we can bring home more next weekend!

Peace out.

Stay classy Fairfax Underground.

Signed, hsfballfan

Yes a big sigh of relief from this CV fan. Great job by Haddock et al to have them prepared.

What a LAME turnout by the Westfield supporters. Everyone on the CV side was surprised. They are a bigger school and if anything should have had the same size crowd we did if not more. Schools are only 10 minutes apart. Feel sorry for the food vendors clearly they were expecting more people.

Anyone know Tutt's status? He is the one player they can least afford to lose other than Scotty. Thinking he will match up against Jaylen Bradshaw (VT commit).

Who is pooh-poohing the turf fields? Heck the Briar Woods game today was moved TO a school that HAD turf. I think it's great that the schools in FX have pretty much done it on their own. Look at PG County the schools there want the state to pay for them.

Anyway, great job by the CV players, yes a couple big plays by WF but really the game was never in doubt.

CV CAN beat Oscar Smith. Heavy underdogs, but this CV team has more speed and balance than the 2011 CV squad. Just need Tutt to be there. CV doesn't get much pass rush, so Mitchell will have time to throw to Bradshaw, just hope Tutt shuts him down.

Long range forecast for next Saturday in Charlottesville: high of 38 with some snow...

WF had a "mandatory-to-attend" band concert in late afternoon. And while a nice crowd I'd say C'ville filled 2/3 to 3/4 of their side.

Clarify that for me... The biggest game for Westfield and a band/pep band isn't travelling to support the football team? Crazy.

They had a pep band. Westfield has a huge band program - 3 of their 5 bands had a concert today. Not saying that was the only reason for light attendance. I suspect weather (cold and windy) another small factor. And perhaps only having a small chance of actually winning the game... who knows...

Congratulations Westfield for a solid season, no shame here. Plenty of lessons learned in prep for next season - should do better next time.

And congratulations to Centreville, will be cheering for you well-trained animals in the state final! Go Wildcats WOOF!

Westfield has a huge band program, Holy Shit and that's what you are blaming the lackluster turnout on? How about I have band program today and Centreville is going to kick our ass and I don't want to be a part of it. Could that really be how it went? I think so!

There is a question that begs to be asked regarding the Westfield/Centreville game. That is, why did Westfield stick with their conservative game plan when CVille was crowding the line of scrimmage, their passing game was not working at all and their defense was getting worn down because of CVille's ball control during the first half. Specifically, why didn't they try an on side kick after Evans broke the 60 plus run in the third quarter. Because they did not kick to the deep backs all game there would have been around a 20 yard difference in field position even if it was not successful. Sure, it would be risky and would potentially would have put the game out of reach if they gave up a touchdown, but they were already down 28-14 and lacking enough consistency on offense to overcome a 2 touchdown deficiency.

Because Westfield's coaches are too stubborn to change anything, period! Their offense was abysmal the first time the 2 schools played, it's been pretty mediocre all season, other than Thrasher-Walker & Gray's running it just hasn't had any punch. Westfield's best bet would have been to run the wildcat ALL game long, Burns as the QB. Run the option heavy out of it, worked pretty well for SOCO and Stonewall. Burns is so electrifying, especially with the ball in his hands in the open field, why not run it?

The offense coordinator did zip, zero, nada, as far as game planning went other than to run the same old plays they've run all season. Are you kidding, Centreville’s coaches and players are too good, that wasn't going to work. Look at Oakton last year, mediocre season, makes the playoffs, coaches move some players around, add a few plays, and they win the region. It's called good coaching.

Anyone who watched Westfield this year new the defense is what kept them in the games they won. However, against a talent laden offense such as Centreville's, the offense needed to step up, they didn't. Centreville's defense outplayed them just as they did the first go round.

Good luck to Centreville next weekend, beat Oscar Smith and bring the 6A championship back to Northern Virginia!!

Sorry, "knew the defense is what kept them in the games they won." is what I meant, still half asleep. I guess the point I was attempting to make is that Westfield would have been much better off trying anything other than their standard, conservative offense.

After last week’s victory over Lake Braddock, even the LB coach Proythess? said if he were coaching Westfield against Centreville "I would run #1 out of the Wildcat all game long or it will be turn in the gear time"! Sounds like a pretty smart man!!

Sorry I took a look at the CV side from the concession area and it was mostly full. I'll grant that any non-partisan fans probably sat on the CV side. But still if some band members had to go to a concert, that doesn't explain the lack of attendance by non-band members. I know lots of CV kids couldn't make it due to basketball, track, etc but still we had a great turnout.

Huh? CV has nearly all their playmakers back next year. We will miss Wiggins and Smith, and Heiner. Yes the game is at WF and yes it will be fun to watch CV beat them on their home turf, I believe CV has not won a regular season game there. WF better find a QB next year. The game will probably be a good one, and from the looks of it they again will be the top two teams in the region. But CV will be the favorite.

Glad to hear that. The Post this morning mentioned a muscle spasm? I give WF credit they play hard, tackle hard, and we probably have some sore players today. Just hope that we are 100% on Saturday.

This post is spot on. First congrats to Centreville. We'll be rooting for you to bring the State title back to Northen Va.

Westfield's demise the last few years has been its conservative and unimaginative play calling. It was the same old thing yesterday. Not having Thrasher-Walker was a killer but all the more reason to mix it up a bit. This type of play calling was also a problem in the Northern Region championship game last year. Last years team had an athletic QB who could run and throw and they never deviated.

This is a good coaching staff, they tend to get the most out of what they have but they need some more variety in offensive play calling.

Good luck C'ville!

The aggressive game plan that South County used is probably not appropriate for WF because they are too conservative to be comfortable with that approach, but I do agree that the wild cat should have been used more to compensate for the missing play making ability of Thrasher-Walker.

I am sure Westfield noticed South County taking it to Centreville a couple weeks ago; everyone else did. I just don't know that, even if the coaches had had the will, if Westfield has all the parts necessary for an effective triple option attack like South County has perfected. Some would argue that Westfield did, but there are a lot of moving pieces that need to be perfected, especially starting with the QB in the option. I think Westfield's Burns is a great pure runner and receiver, but not as good at making decisions and being versatile with the ball as a QB. South County had a very big, physical, fast and surprisingly elusive QB who above all else was smart with the ball, and distributed it very effectively in the option, also usually passing well when needed. South County's offensive production speaks for itself. They are still ranked #4 in the state. Sure, they had some weak teams on the schedule, but so did Lake Braddock and Centreville, and South County put up 35 on Centreville, one of the best, if not the best, teams in the state. If the Stallions had had their defense from two years ago in the 2011 state championship run, there is a good chance they would be headed to UVA next weekend. Not bad for a small school (< 2,000 students) playing in 6A with the big boys.

Listen, Centreville's the better team. But in HS football when your best player is not on the field, of course it matters.

Concur Thrasher walker prob would not have made much difference. Also it is hard to all of a sudden changefrom one type of offense to another. If you dont work on it all year long you are not going to become a zone read or triple option offense in week14

That 2011 SoCo team had really good D. In playoffs, it shutdown 10-0 SB and 12-0 Yorktown and then gave Phoebus fits at UVA before losing 20-10. Yet the D has been down in playoffs since then, giving up a combined 103 points in losses to Yorktown (2012) and CV (2013). This year SoSo's O gsce CV big trouble, it also lost to Chantilly and gave up 45 to LB. As good as SoCo's option has been, Its tough to go far when you give up 55, 48, 45, etc. The more good programs see the option, the better they will adjust, too. SoCo's record the past 3 years is 26-13. That sounds about right for its size and schedule.

Yes they have taken their fair share of transfers over the years, but apparently this year of the 22 starters the only transfer is Brown.

For $10 you can watch it here:

Not sure what Gameday (www.gamedaymagazine.com) is doing, they usually have a day pass option too. Don't know if they have rights to the final though.

I will be at UVa...forecast is for showers, ugh.

Thanks VTboy. I wonder if it's the same feed. Gameday streaming quality is not that great and they were charging 14.99 for the semi-final game.

Thanks for pointing out the facts. Somebody who posts that "...all the good players from Oscar Smith have come in from other schools" doesn't know much about VHSL or beach football after the cleanups of 10 years ago. Heard the same complaints about up here about SB when we won 7 of 10 NR-D5 titles and also when we beat Westield twice. Didn't hear it this year when Westfield beat us. This year CV can play with anybody in the state and I think we will see that at UVA. Smith struggled on O last week and might have trouble stopping #23 this week.

It's just FB, and almost every team and its fans talk smack. You've seen it on here all year with CV, Westfield, LB and SoCo fans trading barbs. Losing to CV this year won't shut anybody up; CV has beaten every team it has faced ultimately by a big margin. So losing to CV is no shame. CV has speed at DB, a good OL, a marquee back and an ability to go on tears such as beating SoCo 27-0 in q4. Plus Smith is very beatable anyway with a young QB and an OL that isn't as strong as the one at 2011 UVA. You just have to do the short passes early and often before 3rd down to counteract its DL.

Last years D6 Championship (Bird/OLakes) is on Youtube, it looks like a VHSL Production and nothing to do with Gameday. The feed is from a different website than Gameday so looks like it's totally unrelated.

The 2013 football season is sadly over for most of the local teams, so I wanted to take this chance to rank all the local teams this year based on how good I thought they were (based on only the thoughts of just a random guy in the stands who doesn't know a damn thing about football, me!). I included all teams from Arlington, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William... Feel free to pull and poke at this list however you like...

#1. Centreville (6A, Clifton) ... State champions? No one has slowed them down even a little outside SoCo.
#2. Briar Woods (5A, Ashburn) ... also playing for the state title, don't talk about how they are a smaller school.
#3. Westfield (6A, Chantilly) ... the playoffs proved that they belong at this rank. Luck or skill, you decide.
#4. Lake Braddock (6A, Burke) ... the coaches choked, pure and simple, so they fall a little in my eyes.
#5. C.D. Hylton (6A, Woodbridge) ... Impressive performance this year, too bad they are in the south now.

#7. Stone Bridge (5A, Ashburn) ... still wondering just what happened out there this year.
#8. South County (6A, Lorton) ... A beautiful offensive attack, but they still need other elements of the game.
#9. James Robinson (6A, Fairfax) ... a team that turned out to be the real thing. Keep an eye on these guys.
#10. Forest Park (6A, Woodbridge) ... Feeling sorry because they had to go to ROANOKE for 1ST ROUND PLAYOFF game.
#11. Washington-Lee (6A, Arlington) ... They finally got that weight of Yorktown off their back this year.
#12. Stonewall Jackson (6A, Manassas) ... I still don't know a damn thing about this team.
#13. T.C. Williams (6A, Alexandria) ... Nice play, they make the playoffs for the first time in how many decades?

#20. Woodgrove (4A, Purcellville) ... Farm... Forest... SCHOOL?!!... Farm... House... see I can do this all day.
#21. Tuscarora (5A, Leesburg) ... when you play 3A schools, you end up not being ready for a 5A playoff.
#22. Battlefield (6A, Haymarket) ... A good quality team like they always seem to field.
#23. Falls Church (5A, Falls Church) ... another fun team on the rise, can't wait to see what they do next year.

#25. Dominion (4A, Sterling)
#26. Hayfield (6A, Alexandria) ... Welcome to the 6A, you gotta play with the big boys now.
#27. Oakton (6A, Vienna) ... They will get back on track next year, you can count on it.
#28. West Potomac (6A, Alexandria) ... Liked their football better when they were Groveton High School.
#29. McLean (6A, McLean) ... It's probably better that they missed the playoffs, it might force some changes.
#30. W.T. Woodson (6A, Fairfax) ... Probably should go and stick to the basketball season.
#31. South Lakes (6A, Reston)
#32. Robert E. Lee (5A, Springfield) ... Honestly, they are worse than this ranking, but they're mine!
#33. Potomac (5A, Dumfries)
#34. Loudoun County (4A, Leesburg)
#35. Freedom (5A, Woodbridge) ... Why are two schools so close to each other named the same damn thing?
#36. Kettle Run (3A, Nokesville) ... Patriot's little step-brother?
#37. Osbourn Park (6A, Manassas)
#38. Potomac Falls (5A, Sterling) ... They appear to be a program on the rise, but they have quite a way to go.
#39. George Mason (2A, Falls Church) ... Yes, they have a football team, and yes, they were in the playoffs.
#40. Mount Vernon (5A, Alexandria) ... Made the playoffs, but then again, so did everybody else.
#41. Herndon (6A, Herndon) ... Looks like their team is holding together for next year, experience helps.
#42. Thomas Edison (5A, Alexandria) ... My 9-year-old cousin's flag football team plays a better defense.
#43. Thomas Jefferson (5A, Alexandria) ... Launched a satellite, still needs to launch a football.
#44. West Springfield (6A, Springfield) ... This is me being objective. They beat my Lee, else they'd be last.

#46. J.E.B. Stuart (5A, Falls Church) ... not much football right now, just money laundering.
#47. James Madison (6A, Vienna) ... needs all the help they can get, it is like a circus over there.
#48. Park View (4A, Sterling)
#49. Heritage (4A, Leesburg) ... barely missed the playoffs, but did upset Loudoun County.
#50. Gar-Field (6A, Woodbridge) ... I'm probably dating myself, but I remember when these guys were GOOD.
#51. John Champe (3A, Aldie)
#52. Annandale (6A, Annandale) ... classless team, classless coach, classless school, fire everyone.
#53. Wakefield (5A, Arlington) ... at least Annandale actually won a game.
#54. Freedom (5A, South Riding)
#55. Manassas Park (3A, Manassas Park) ... There are two teams worse than this one? Can I call it a team?
#56. George Marshall (5A, Falls Church) ... If I can actually say one school is worse than this bunch.
#57. Brentsville District (3A, Nokesville) ... they win the distinction of being the worst area thing... Hurray!

Wow. You didn't miss a team.

I think I'd swap Langley and W-L.

Good points. Maybe switch #17 Yorktown and put it ahead of #16 Fairfax. Yorktown eliminated Fsirfax in playoffs 12-7 and didn't even have Stewart.

@ newgatedenizen -- A good case for Langley. My reasoning behind moving Washington-Lee higher was due to the historic nature of this season to that program by winning the district.

@ OneSBfan -- A good point yourself. While Fairfax was defeated by Yorktown, I see Fairfax as a program on the rise this year, while Yorktown suffered a black eye against their crosstown rivals and stumbled through a little.

Ha, Yorktown over Fairfax bc Y earned more power points in reg season (despite the loss to WL), earned a higher seed and then beat Fairfax in playoffs w-o Stewart. Y also beat 'Tilly w-o Stewart. I thought you'd bust on me about SB sliding this year, haha.

Nat4lee, that's an awesome assessment of the season. I like that you integrated teams from across the area and different classes. Your assessment of Robinson is excellent--that team had one really bad game vs CV but otherwise was tough. It passed the eye test for sure. The same for how you assessed SoCo--great O but D gave up points in key games. I saw Langley-SB and was impressed with the Saxons OL and RB, despite the loss. Also saw Yorktown beat Fairfax on a punishing late drive all on runs between the tackles by a backup RB. So I like Yorktown over Fairfax. You had to be there. More confusing, how did Chantilly, which lost to a team Stewart-less Yorktown, beat SoCo? Was it poor ball handling and penalties or did Chantilly stand tall?

Sorry. Been away for a while. Looked at a lot of Centreville and Oscar Smith games. To me, this comes down to Centreville’s pass defense.

The Colonial Forge game was a mudder. Not the type of game plan Smith will likely use on the UVA field. They’ve seen Centreville’s weak secondary and probably know it’s their vulnerability. I’d expect them to go 5 wide and Spread most of the time, with the occasional I-formation for select downs, with both run and pass as options in the I. I’d expect quick shots to eventually open something deep. From what I’ve seen of most of C’Ville’s secondary, they will not be able to cover man, and don’t do zone particularly well. Washington-Lee was able to pass on them, almost at will. (W-L just didn’t know how to score.) Oscar Smith is no Washington-Lee. They have several Division 1 level receivers, in Zack Jones, Jaylen Bradshaw, and Melvin Vaughn.

I’ve looked hard at C'Ville's secondary, and they, like most DBs today, pride themselves on tackles after the catch. Newsflash folks, tackles after the catch mean you just gave up 10-20 yards for a quality team. That means points in bunches. Congratulations on a tackle after you just gave up 20 yards and a first down seems pretty ridiculous, but it’s the in thing to do. (Although self-congratulations at all levels for what is a failure is common at all levels now.)

Shon Mitchell, the OS QB, is not the run of the mill NOVA QB. He has the athleticism of Stroman at Stonewall, but is very good passer. He can move, which will keep C’Ville’s LBs close to the line of scrimmage, and will help open the passing. And he is accurate. He doesn’t just lob the ball and hope for the best. He can drill it. He’s not a Div 1 QB (yet), but he is a better passer than anything C’Ville has faced. (Except possibly Appel at Washington-Lee, only in terms of passing.)

Smith’s screens in particular will be difficult for C’Ville to cope with. OS is disciplined and leaves very little to chance.

Unless the C’Ville secondary figures out how to cover in a hurry, or the C’Ville coaches rent some players who can cover tight and bottle up these receivers, this will be a long game for C’Ville. Frankly, and reluctantly, I don’t know that Haddock and crew can figure out this style of play, so I have to go with Oscar Smith, probably in a runaway. C’Ville might keep it close, but only if they match scores. Which will be difficult, as OS’ defense is very good.

Lastly, C’Ville’s passing game is pretty predictable. Tutt long, Tutt hitch, swing Turner out, put Turner as a slot for a wheel route, throw to the TE after a play action block. Frankly Haddock needs to open up the passing game early. If not, he will be opening it up late, when they are behind, possibly by a lot. And if Tutt goes down again, what next? OS will just smother Turner with coverage and C’Ville becomes very one dimensional. If the C’Ville coaches don’t loosen up, they may end up getting stuffed, like with South County early. But unlike the South County game, a comeback from a major deficit will be highly unlikely.

Sorry, just the way I am seeing it pan out. I hope I’m wrong.

Smith tests your LBs--short passes that make you play chase. Then they show you run and go deep to #4. IMHO, this Smith team is not as good as its 2011 team except on the DL. Yet CV is strong, has a marquee back and has beaten everybody it faced by a wide margin. If you're a Wildcat, you walk out on that field ready because you are battle-tested and don't quit after giving up a big play. You also pressure the QB and position your LBs to cutoff those short passes. Looking forward to seeing both teams do their thing.

Nova Fan - Are you referring to Tutt #2? I have not heard anything about a concussion. Please provide details.

Viking - Good analysis. I have been worried about CV's secondary most of the year but no team have been able to take advantage enough to win. Westfield should have during the 2nd half without Tutt. Not concerned about CV speed but size is an issue.

Expecting a good game this Saturday at UVA.

Question - is the field at UVA turf or grass? If grass, with rain in the forecast and the 5A game prior to CV/OS game, field conditions may not be ideal.

Scott Stadium is a grass field. With rain/sleet/snow a possibility and playing on a grass field right after another game, is that advantage C'ville or OS? While passing would still be a possibility, in those conditions it would seem the game could become one dimensional.

Muddy field favors CVille. Takes some of the uber speed and deep routes away from Oscar Smith. Of course Smith's line is stout but I believe CVille will be able to run some against them.
