I don't think Centreville would have a problem playing of any of those teams. The only one on the list OS played was Lake Taylor and they blew them out 42-2. Since you predict the score between OS and Cville to be 21-20, then how would you come the conclusion Centreville wouldn't want to play LT?

Fan's point was that OS has played several subpar Div 4 and Div 5 teams that probably padded their numbers. Not counting LT, OS played Div 4 teams with records of 1-9, 2-8, 4-7, 9-4 and Div 5 teams with records of 1-9, 5-6, and 2-8. Again, not counting LT, that's 7 games outside of D6, and only 1 had a winning record. Does that make OS battle tested? The reason VHSL ranks Centreville higher than OS is because Centreville's schedule was harder.

Not taking anything away from OS. They are a great team and Cville will have to play a near perfect game to beat them.

Lax transfer rules down in 757 make one or two teams really good and the rest so so. Hope they can live with their conscience.

The kids chosen were better! Who would you have replaced with a Westfield kid?

"The kids chosen were better! Who would you have replaced with a Westfield kid?"

Coach Fairfax,

Tyler Sevener at DT, Sayvon Martin at DE, Connor Rogers at LB, or Donteiro Moore at DB, should be on that list. Those are who I'd replace them with!

My point was if you have a defense that ranks #2 in the region, played some pretty good competition, but only had 1 player make it on the 2nd team, that seems to be a bit odd.

The victories don't happen without great players, that's a fact. Please don't think the system the’re in has anything to do with it, it's the players.

It's funny that year in and year out Westfield seems to have some pretty solid team, plays in a pretty good district, but has players that get overlooked. I believe the 6A North championship game was the 40th game in the past 3 years the Bulldogs played in, 35-5 during that period.

What what,

Thanks for seeing my point of view, I don't think anyone Oscar Smith played Centreville would be afraid of. I've coached and watched a ton of football in the Northern Region dating back to 1983, I can't remember a team from this area as solid as this Centreville team. Does that mean they'll win tomorrow, who knows, that's why they play the game. I was just merely pointing out a potentially soft schedule, not by overall record of teams played but size and quality of opponents. I also think it speaks for itself that only 1 beach team is playing for a championship tomorrow, that would tell me maybe the rest of the state has some quality players as well!

Coach Fairfax,

I've got no problem with the kids on the 1st team list but to have at least one of the kids I mentioned above not on the second team is a joke. Once again, you can't have a defense that was as solid as Westfield's and not have quality players. I'll leave it up to you to decide who'd they replace, I'm not big into embarrassing kids publicly which is what you're asking me to do.

Westfield has been a top team through the years as they should be; they have more students to choose from than any other school in Fairfax County as well as the necessary demographics. I'm sure the coaches from WF are good but I wonder how successful the coaches from the larger schools would be if they had the lower enrollments and challenging demographics such as schools like South County, Hayfield or Yorktown and I am sure there are others. I don’t know who was selected as coach of the year but my vote would go to the South County coach.

If it was that easy with a large enrollment how did a great coach like Verbanic go 12-10 in his last two years at WF? A huge turnaround with Simmons.

Verbanic had mentally checked out, apparently was pissed that he didn't get the AD job which is why he bolted for Flint Hill. Became football and baseball coach, assistant AD with the plan he'd eventually take over.

Large enrollments don't necessarily equate to great football programs, T.C. Williams has more students than Westfield but haven't been relevant in regard to football over the past 10 years or so prior to this season.

That's exactly what you have done, in saying that the kids you mention are better than the kids chosen by the Coaches of the area. So Man Up and tell me who you listed should replace the players the COACHES picked.

Am down at UVA already. Just had chicken tenders at Canes with EasternVaFan. He is a trip--goes to BCS title games every year. We both said we wouldn't be surprised if either CV or OS wins. It's wet here and temps are dropping to low 30s with rain/snow for tomorrow. If you are coming, bring rain gear. I see both games as being close with the outcome turning on just a few plays or drives. I just can't see where any of the four teams is so much better that it will dictate to its opponent tomorrow.

Coach Fairfax,

Been away for several days, so apologize for not responding earlier.

Sorry about mixing up the players. The Centreville players are definitely athletes, but I still have doubts about the coverage ability of the secondary. I think, however, that coverage is more about instinct than athletic ability. The issue may be moot, based on the weather. Not sure anyone will be able to run an effective passing game in freezing rain and snow.

Glad to hear you don’t think the OS QB is not as athletic as Stroman. That should help Centreville. From what I saw, I thought he was very good, but relooking at it, I think you are probably right. I do think, however, that he is a much better passer than Stroman.

Good analysis on what C’Ville needs to do. Seems very plausible. I hope it works out. Wish I could be there.

EasternVaFan/hsfballfan,

If the game does tend to focus on Centreville’s LBs, particularly due to the weather, then that should help C’Ville a lot. From all the games I’ve seen, C’Ville has two of the most talented LBs in the state. The LB pass coverage is good, not great, but Wiggins and Love have great speed, and are intimidating when they hit. They may be just what C’Ville needs to trap the OS QB and shake him up.

Novafootball13

While I agree that NOVA football has had a down year, I’d take issue with your characterizations of Westfield, South County (some, but not great, def), and Robinson. (To me Chantilly was better than it’s record showed, as well.) LB actually beat Westfield once, but just couldn’t close at the end of the play-off game.

Coach Fairfax,

Man up, what are you, 15 years old? Please, please, please, don't tell me you're an actual coach, I’m assuming you're not given your childish response. BTW, this thread has been going on for awhile now and there has been some good discussion along with disagreements. What sets pretty much all the other posters who have offered insightful comments and you apart is that we haven't made this a personal attack on someone we might disagree with.

If you are actually a coach from the region then you'll know all 4 players I mentioned from Westfield who were snubbed. All played a major role in helping Westfield get to the 6A North championship game. Given the conservative offense the Bulldogs ran all year only speaks volumes of how talented their defense was compiling an 11-3 record.

Please also don't think for one minute that because the kids on the list were chosen by coaches that they’re truly better than those that were not. I know for a fact there was an OT on the first team all Concorde list who had no business being on the list let alone starting for his team. You see, I am actually a coach who knows the Concorde teams and players very well, northern region kids for that matter. That's probably why I was so surprised that the team with the #2 defense in the region only had one player listed, and he was second team.

Coach Fairfax,

Oh, and in case I didn’t get my point across, listing the 4 players i thought had every right to be on the list is not embarrassing anyone of the players who made it. What would be embarrassing would have been me naming a particular player on the list and saying he doesn't belong. If you don't know the difference then I truly feel sorry for you.

Once again, this thread is so people may voice they’re opinions and whatever inside knowledge others might not possess. If you don’t agree then that’s absolutely fine, but state your case in a well thought, well constructed response, anything else only diminishes your point.

My early thoughts from the frozen stands are that both teams are doing okay with field conditions. L.C. Bird is hurting themselves with penalties and bad coverage.

Briar Woods scores an 80-yard touchdown on a 50-yard pass play to wide open reciever. (21)

So Bird gets the ball coming out of the half, and suddenly no one can stop Bird's #5 Hughes, and he keeps going through 4&5 defenders. Up until now Briar Woods was the only ones with long controlling drives, but now Bird does. Hughes scores for Bird. They are successful on a 2 point conversion.

With 8:36 in the third quarter,
Briar Woods 21, Lloyd C. Bird 14.

Briar Woods burns two of their three timeouts already on frivolous plays. Someone told me Hughes is in the top five rushers in all 100+ years of VHSL history. Anyway, he still cannot be stopped in the second half no matter what he does. Bird has all the momentum. QB sneak scores for Bird, expecting Hughes to get it maybe. Extra point no good AGAIN!

With 11:57 left in the game, the score is

L.C. Bird's Hughes #5 was wide open again for a short touchdown pass and QB sneaks for a two point conversion... What a fantastic game this has become. The game is tied. LC Bird's D has arrived! They pick off the first throw made by BW and take possession again.

With 5:50 left in the game, the score is
Briar Woods 28, Lloyd C. Bird 28

Bird scores by AN ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL play by Hughes. He is amazing at getting around defenders. My it's all Bird now.

With 4:22 left in the game, the score is
Lloyd C. Bird 35, Briar Woods 28.

YOUR 2013 STATE CHAMPIONS ARE THE LLOYD C. BIRD SKYHAWKS!

This is the second consecutive championship for them.

The first and second halves were simply night and day. Bird was down 21-6 and stormed back to win 35-28. I personally believe that Briar Woods got away from containing Hughes, and Hughes beat them. Also, Bird's offensive line deserves kudos.

Bird dominated 2nd half with usual ground game; down 21-6 at half but answered with 4 TDs on 3 long drives and an INT. Tough loss for BW; its QB had a good game and made a bunch of plays on D .

McSorley and Briar Woods should have stuck to 4A. The big Vanderbilt recruit who "does it all" whiffs on a tackle giving up the go ahead Bird TD.

McSorley won't make it in the SEC, even at Vandy.

Yeah, sucks to be him. 3 state titles in 4 years, free ride at a good school, gets more pussy in one weekend than you've had your whole life. What a miserable life the guy's got. LOL

Now, I happen to agree with you, but why don't you think he won't make it?

Strong enough arm, not very big but solid, almost 6', and a very, very heady player. I happen to think the physical tools are lacking, but the kid is a winner and a competitor.

I wish him luck. Briar actually played better than I thought they wood. Guess Bird's schedule was a bit fradulent.

It's on TV up here. We can all see it. The run by Hughes was OK, but nothing great. He stopped and the defender, who was fighting off a blocker, over ran him when he cut back inside. If there had been ANY pursuit, Hughes would have been tackled. The announcer compared Hughes to Barry Saunders after that run. What a asshat, comparing Saunders - one of the greatest to ever play the game - to Hughes. That was a laugh out loud moment.

LC Bird played a great game today. Briar Woods had been the star of the show the last few years but got welcomed to D5 by LC Bird. In all reality, Briar Woods should be playing D6, they have around 2100 kids in the school. Another shining example of the VHSL and their ass backwards way of placing teams in respective divisions. Since I am on a rant here, why would they play the games at a college stadium? If you watched the game you noticed a majority of empty seats. Playing the game at a high school field with synthetic turf would have made the atmosphere more like a high school state championship. I remember when WT Woodson would host the AAA football state championships back in the late 70’s (Annandale vs Highland Springs) and it created a far better experience than a ¾ empty Scott Stadium.

EasternVaFan was right. This isn't Smith 2011. CV is blowing Smith's vaunted DL off the ball and its D has the young QB on his heels. CV looking great. Total rout at half 21-0.

OS body language tells the story. Their defense in particular. C'ville totally dominating this game. In fact, looks worse than the Westfield game.

If I might add, just like the Westfield game, QB Walter is the difference in this game. He has pretty much taken over and is controlling the game.

Waiting to see if OS outscores CV by 21+ in 2nd half like Bird did to BW. I can't see it though bc CV was so dominant in the 1st half.

With four minutes left in the third quarter, Oscar Smith picks off a pass to Nickens-Yzer in the red zone, but fumbles the ball snap on the next play, and Centreville recovers even closer to the goal. Wildcats score again on a QB sneak.

Centreville 28, Oscar Smith 0

I stand by what I said earlier: Oscar Smith had no idea what hit them. I'd say it is obvious the good effects of playing strong 6A competition all year had on this game, along with the excellent coaching and good sportsmanship of the Wildcat players.
