That is a 1959 Chevrolet Station Wagon, and backed into the driveway is a 1957 Ford Fairlane.

The TC by Maserati in the picture would date this between 1989 and 1991.

Joe the painter got the message out for a song back then , I would rather see the extra 1000 spent go to were its needed most then glory on car doors. Look at The Virginia State Police , other then the fancy silver paint that comes with the cars their decals are still fairly spartan to save money . People are such drones today no wonder government is so screwed up

Thanks

I remember the way Shakey's was back in the late 60's and early 70's. Long wooden tables, kinda dark, kids everywhere, music, and it was festive.

Kids standing on the bench watching the pizzas being made. Dad loved the black beer.

Then we went home in our wood covered Ford Country Squire Station Wagon.

Route 1 at the Occoquan bridge looking north at the bridge going into Fairfax county. No date given but it had to have been before hurricane Agnes destroyed the bridge in the summer of 1972.

Every by passer and of course cops saw them holing up in the winos nests that were on the right side along the wooded fence line of that Mt Vernon drive in pic and left them alone often happily waving at them as they waved back as they were not bothering anyone .

What a good place to collect empty bottles of Boones Farm , Richards Irish Rose, Ripple, T Bird and other excellent fine wines back then along with Giant Brand and Colt Malt Liquor Bull beer cans, if the bounty on them was a nickel each I would have made my first million much sooner by buying more land in Fairfax County at dirt cheap prices

"Where are we trick or treating tonight Ken" "Well Karen were 18 lets try the winos nests at the drive in maybe they will give away some wine and weed "

On the north/west side of the bridge is a field where one summer late 80s they had jam festivals. Is that what we called them?

Colt 45 Malt Liquor had a horse. Schlitz Malt Liquor had the bull.

All I remember is hiding out waiting for you to come down that hill to the bridge too fast with your VW bus filled with weed smoke or a car filled with beer cans and liquor bottles , sorry that was the 70's with that weed bus

I think that was on the NW corner of Bevin and Rt 50 a/k/a Fairfax Blvd. Across Bevin from the now TD Bank. At that horrible no-right-on-red light. It faced 50 and sat back from the road. Unless I’m mistaken.

The building was torn down around 1980, and it was located very near Kutner Park close to the Lanier Middle School ball fields.

This was the first McDonalds in the area and was on the corner of Commerce Street and Brandon Avenue. The low structure to the left on the other side of Commerce street was the Howard Johnson's motor lodge.

Anyone remember this Chevy dealer?

From what I have read, Aero Chevrolet sold the first Z-28 Camaro in the U.S.and it was run at Daytona and other tracks.

It was sold to Joe Heishman the VW Dealer.

The Camaro was "Discovered" during restoration, and it was brought back to it's former glory as seen in the last photo.

A small slice of automotive history
Alexandria Times, December 15, 2016
https://www.alexandriava.gov/uploadedFiles/historic/info/attic/2016/Attic20161215Aero.pdf

Back then, Aero Chevrolet was on King Street. The article says it was at the corner of King Street and Henry Street. I thought it was farther up than that, near the Coca-Cola bottling plant. I can't remember a lot of things now.

I'm not going to quote the whole article. Here's a little bit:

>>>>

The all-new Chevrolet Camaro reached dealers in September, 1966, including Alexandria’s Aero Chevrolet, which had stood at the corner of King and North Henry streets since 1920. Seen in this picture taken September 27, 1966, 16-year-old Mary Jean Austin — who must have truly been the envy of her friends — took delivery of the first Camaro that Aero sold.

Not content to challenge Ford’s Mustang only in the showroom, Chevrolet began making plans for a racing version of the Camaro. While sportier versions of the car existed from the beginning with special engines, suspension and tires among many options offered, a new model was developed that was intended to be a race car and was not initially sold to the general public. The first Camaro Z-28 rolled off the assembly line on December 29, 1966 and was shipped to a dealer who had a special customer waiting to take ownership: Aero Chevrolet in Alexandria.

Aero’s anxious customer was Hugh Heishman, who owned the Volkswagen-Porsche dealership in Arlington and had been actively involved in racing for many years. He had seen a Mustang perform at a track in Virginia, and was interested in the Z-28 Camaro as an exciting new competitor. In January, 1967, Heishman took delivery of this first-ever Z-28, though he didn’t know that it was the first one at the time.

Together with his service manager and fellow racer, Alexandrian Johnny Moore, Heishman prepared the car to race in the new Trans-America Series events, with the first being at Daytona, Fla. on February 3. Rule changes for competition were due to take effect the following year, so after just six races, Heishman sold the car to the letter carrier who served his dealership and bought another Camaro.

What about Dick Blanken Ford in Arlington near Mario's Pizza in Clarendon?

They sponsored youth league teams in Arlington for Basketball and Baseball and purchased jackets for the teams that won the Championship of their league. Sold a lot of cars from that location.

Koons Ford at 7-Corners was also a mainstay, who started the Koons family auto empire that we know today all around the DC Metro area.

The family lived in the Mt Eagle Area of Fairfax Co. in a small home , then in 1955 moved into Alexandria City into the Clover neighborhood

In 1974 when President Ford took office suddenly after President Nixon's resignation he was still living at the Alexandria City home until he could move into the White House and Alexandria police aided the US Secret Service protecting him. Ford also attended a city police crab feast and supported the Alexandria police as President

His sons went to TC Williams with a future mayor of Alexandria. Both former homes are on the US national list of historical places. DAJAX

KLINE Chevrolet was the dealer at Edsall and Van Dorn. I think an NTB is in there now.

There was a Buick Dealership on the corner down the block, which is now a BMW franchise.

Aero Chevrolet was at Van Dorn and Edsal in the picture above. It has been several car dealership iterations before becoming NTB which is what I believe it is now.

It was one of those charity fundraising Haunted Houses when Mr. Blanche and I were "courting."

The Buick Dealer was Temple Motor Co. at 499 S.Pickett St. The company started over on Diagonal Road in the 1930's and they also sold Pontiac brand cars.

Can't find any photos of Temple Motor Co. at either location. Can anyone confirm the 1930's start of business?

Temple Motors is in the background. When you go to the link, you can see the Pontiac sign.

Out of the Attic
Upper King Street
Alexandria Times, May 21, 2009

Image: Looking west from the 1600 block of King Street, ca. 1935. Photo, Office of Historic Alexandria. his photograph, looking west from the 1600 block of King Street, was likely a personal snapshot centering on the George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Taken around 1935, just a few years after the memorial was completed, it captured one specific area that played an important role in the leisure activities of Alexandrians.

On the right, where the billboard-covered walls are visible, was Baggett’s Stadium, a baseball park where local teams competed for 20 years. Shortly after this photo was taken, the ballpark closed and a cinema was built in the 1700 block of King. When the Reed Theatre opened in 1937, it was the largest movie theatre in the state, able to accommodate 1,400 guests, and a nearby parking lot could hold hundreds of cars.

Several commercial sites are visible in this photo, including a Sanitary Grocery at 1630 King Street and the Dixie Café at 1640 King. The Sanitary Grocery Company was a regional chain of food stores that was acquired by California-based Safeway. By the mid-1940s, a larger Safeway store had opened at 1747 King and the old Sanitary Grocery became an Acme Market.

At the time this photo was snapped, several auto-related businesses were along Upper King. Service stations operated on both sides of King Street, including one visible on the left at Diagonal Road, where King Street Gardens is today. On the right, there was a used car lot and on the left were the Alexandria Motor Company, a Dodge and Plymouth dealer and Temple Motors, which sold Pontiacs and Buicks.

To learn more about Alexandria’s automotive history, stop by The Lyceum’s “Old Cars in Alexandria” show on Saturday, May 30.

Great photo - Interesting facts and history about the F-32 and Universal Air Line System. Both Short lived.

They only manufactured 10-12 of the F-32s in Fokker's factory in New Jersey. The engine design proved problematic, and was the cause of a crash on Long Island.

Universal started around 1928 but was swallowed up with about 80 other small airlines by American Airlines about 1934.

Below are a couple ad brochures about Universal. They don't depict the F-32

The U.S Army looked the the aircraft, but decided against the design.

Here are a couple screenshots I took off a old home movie of Springfield Virginia dated 1972 to 1973. Village inn pizza and 7-11 that I think was on Backlick road across the street from the Dauphine steak house.

To the left of Esposito's towards FFX Circle - that building was torn down just a few years ago and now has a Pediatric Dental practice. There was a guns & ammo business in the trailer-looking structure between the two.

Unless I am mixed up, this distinctive architecture is of a restaurant chain called The Golden Point: an early national hamburger drive-in chain that failed in the early 60s, predating McDonalds. I think this one is still standing, but it's on Commerce Street in front of the Concord Shopping Plaza (across from where they recently demolished the parking lot / bank). It's not really across from Dauphines. 7-11 is confounding.) It is currently "El Paso Mexican Restaurant".

There's another one (still standing or maybe very recently demolished) in Baileys Crossroads: "Palenque" restaurant aka "M! Pueblo". Columbia Pike, near the German store, but on the right side outbound. Pic attached.

A third was near Parkington (Ballston) on the corner of Fairfax Drive and Glebe Road.

Nope, the Village Inn Pizza Parlor in Springfield was built as a Village Inn. Next door was Lums. Dauphines was located at 6315 Amherst Ave, not Backlick Rd. However, the 7-11 picture does look like the spot on Backlick Rd across from McDonalds and Mikes American Grill.

Yes.

Let's digress into this point, since everyone likes to talk about strip clubs! If people don't know what we're talking about: the club has been called "Paper Moon" for a pretty long time now.

Some potential confusion about the address is due to road names and routing. If you are driving down Backlick Road (i.e. from Annandale), then the road goes to the back entrance and parking lot of Dauphines. The front door and street address are on Amherst.

When I was a kid, Amherst didn't used to be in the way. So Backlick continued at grade across the way. (So maybe it's even possible that Dauphines had a Backlick Road address. And who knows where maybe the front door used to be. I dunno.)

Now, to further confuse things, where was a second location of Dauphines. Someone other than me will have to fill this history in - I don't know when this one opened. (I might speculate that it had something to do with business conditions or construction and maybe licensing or something.) Anyway, the other location was over in the Backlick Plaza shopping strip on the other side of Backlick Road, a few blocks away. It was called the "1369" (or whatever the address was, I forget). Same strip as Jersey Mikes and Tippy's Tacos (!!). It closed a few years ago.
So someone could maybe also get those two locations mixed up.

The titty bar in Brookfield plaza was called the 1320 club 2. The original 1320 club was in Alexandria I think. Anyway there is a short thread about the 1320 club here, http://www.fairfaxunderground.com/forum/read/2/2396403.html

Where was that at the Circle? Bob Ted Datsun location? I only remember HBL in Tysons. John's VW Service (I think that is what was called) at the intersection of 50/123 next to 29 Diner is the primary VW memory I have in the immediate area.

HBL started at Fairfax Circle selling VW's then moved to Kamp Washington near the Super Giant and Fairfax Honda

Bob Ted Datsun was the Circle, as was Renies RV

It was located just east of where Patriot Harley is now. Looks like it's a used car place now. I think HB moved to the Kamp Washington location soon after we got the 66 bug. The brush looks like an HB accessory that they gave out and not a standard VW item (at least from what I could find).

Through the power of the interwebs I was able to trace HB Lantzsch to its original location at 9711 Lee Highway which is now a used car lot, next door to a vacant rebuild of what was previously Bob's Beef House and then Mama's Italian Restaurant. I recall Renies RVs being primarily across the street between the hotel that was just torn down for the new WaWa and the old Rustler Steakhouse (now Advance Auto Parts) in the late 70s.

Those German style hairbrushes are difficult to find. Not many survived the war as the brush factories in the Ruhr Valley were favorite targets of the US and RAF Bombers.

I think this may be the Tastee Freez on W. Broad St. in the City of Falls Church. The photo is before my time but the nearby school could be St. James Catholic School. And the lot around Tastee Freez might have been undeveloped at the time of the photo, 1960. I heard that 3-story apartments were built behind the Tastee Freez in '59 or '60. That could be what the shadow is.

This was my Grandfather Hershal Blevins second store the first one was on Popeshead rd.. Later my mom Louise Blevins took over this store. Old timers would remember the turkey shoot down back of the store.
And if you look on the maps it is still called Blevins town because him and my Grandmother Bertha moved up her from Marian Va. Around 1910.
