I was watching the "Movie Channel" (20.2) on tv the other night and they were showing "Lilith," about a girl in an asylum in Rockville. There were some cool scenes of the inmates playing around Great Falls, from the Virginia side. I had heard about it but never saw the movie. Jean Seburg played Lilith.

There was a large house painted white that was along Burke Rd near where the 7-11 is today, it was moved about 1976 down the road to the other side not too far from the tight turn , it was or still is a place selling garden things and plants , it's still there . When it was moved it was a big deal in the paper as it was such a big house, there's a picture of it here in old picture. The house now has got to be about 120 years old . It's across from the Roy Marshall house who was a founder of the Burke VFD and Fire chief in the 40's 50's who died about 1973

Looks like Baileys Crossroads off Leesburg Pike. I googled "Hechingers Falls Church" and it came up with an old address: 5516 Leesburg Pike Falls Church, VA 22041. Then proceeded to move around w/ google earth and view until I found the buildings in the background.

If you were to head down the hill to the left, you would go past where Myer-Emco used to be and where REI still is. The building on the corner with the "fabrics" sign is now a Vitamin Shoppe. The dumpster has been moved.

Great photo Fran!

The barn shaped building on the right is Vincent's Hardware. This site would later become Gulf gas station.

The building in the middle is Vincent's Diner. This site would later become the location of Sambo's. Because of issues of the name it would become a Denny's.

The large white square build to the left of Vincent's Diner is the Fairfax Theater the opened circa 1947/1948 and stopped showing movies around 1974. It be came the "Northern Virginia Rock Centre" 1975, and the a auction house around 1979.

The theater sat vacant for a few years, except for a barber shop and another small business, until it was bought by the Ourisman Auto Group and turn into Ourisman Toyota.

The building on the far left is the GM Training Center that closed just a few years ago.

Thanks for a great photo.

Happy Thanksgiving to all from Old Iron.

Was that up at Bailys near the REI spoken about in this thread . Dixie Hi Fi the place in the 70s where they had sales on stereos and speakers and hundreds of people stood in line all night for nothing as the good stuff was gone in a flash as soon as they opened with the first 2 people getting a deal and the rest getting to waste the sunny weekend day sleeping in

With the name Dixie they would have a fire sale today after being burned and looted by Democrats just due to the their name only, shows the real hate the Democrats have brought to America today

Pretty sure the Vincent's Hardware location turned into a women's clothing store, then later into a Fuddruckers. I remember shopping there, then eating there years later. Not sure what was there in between. Last time I drove by that location, the building was still standing but in very poor shape.

A little love for Arlington. Fowler Carbonics which later turned into the Cherry Smash bottling plant. Last pic is a W&OD maintenance vehicle "hybrid" which ran on rails or tires with the Fowler Carbonics building in the background.

In photo #1 tucked on the left side is a Little Tavern Hamburger stand. Is this the same Little Tavern that could be seen from I-66 for many years?

5 cent hamburgers was a long time ago.

No. The one you’re thinking of was at Lion Village where Spout Run meets Lee Hwy. Next to the Pawn Shop.

^ This area, once called Dead Man’s Hollow

Below is an excerpt from a news article posted at https://ghostsofdc.org/2014/05/15/dangers-dead-mans-hollow-near-rosslyn/
describing how the area looked in 1906,

"Dead Man’s Hollow,.... Ensconced between two high hills on the Falls Church turnpike, on the main road to Fairfax Court House, it presents a forbidding appearance to the wayfarer after dark. The hills, rising from the road, are covered by deep gloomy woods, and rank vegetation that shut off all light of the sun in the day and the moon and stars at night."

The parking lot wasn't any too crowded even then.

I have driven by the building between the Toyota and Subaru dealerships a million times and I couldn't tell you what is in there! Hahahahahaha!

Next to Toyota, is the Verizon )formerly Bell Atlantic/Chesapeake and Potomac) telephone company central office. They also own(Ed) the smaller building on top of the hill behind the CO.

Is the Subaru dealer still next door to the other side? I thought it was another, or maybe an index?

Interesting thread. Too bad it's not moderated.

I'd post a lot of NoVA digitized 35mm negative and slide images from the 70s through 90s, and digital images from the 2000s... Except there's too much trollish inflammatory baiting, personal insults, and far too much off-topic diatribe and vapid political rhetoric here.

Forty+ years of Nova and Fairfax County, ranging from Great Falls, Lewinsville, SpringHill, Pimmit Hills, McLean, Falls Church, Alexandria, Lorton, and some from surrounding areas like Arlington, Loudon, Woodbridge, Occoaquan and DC, Tysons Corner as it developed over the years, including winter holidays from 72 through 85. Initial construction and dedication of McLean Community Center.

If I post or link them, it will be some other venue, not here. Maybe Pinterest and Imgur. Such images would probably end up here anyway, given the large number appearing here that were lifted from elsewhere.

I started in photography as a child about age 6. My grandfather was a photographer in the early 1900s, including WW1 Europe. He taught me early on in the 1960s with old portrait equipment. His father was a photographer too. It became a hobby and side profession for me. I have thousands of 35mm print and slide images made from NoVA.

I remember it, but have had no luck finding anything about it online.

I used to go there in high school to get film from Fuller & D'Albert, before they opened their Saratoga store.

I totally agree, Democrats have turned into the enemy within especially over the last 4 years with their hate, their only saving grace is all the immigrants votes who never could take care of their family who depend on their welfare assistance when our ancestors never got or wanted a dime of welfare as they earned what they had, plus the young hopelessly brain wiped by liberal patents, liberals and leftists in schools and colleges , their social media and Democrat loving mainstream media plus subliminal Hollywood leftist propaganda all fully biased and pushing them into the mold of a liberal to leftist Democrat follower, all of this is being done by people of far above average to great wealth who are the worlds worst hypocrites

Our nation is now hopelessly divided, while only 7 % of our young people today raise their hands and swear to support and defend the US constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic , the huge majority today from America loving conservative family's who are moderate Democrats and Republicans Independents and others

A nation divided can not stand said Lincoln of the Republican party and he was right in time we will all pay for the progressive spread of a disease known as liberalism that was designed to soften up America to the point we lose all resolve to survive as the United States can never become a globalist communist nation the now Democrat party leftists want , with too many of them "Americans" in name only as they twist our constitution to suit their needs and threaten to take constitutional rights from the people by force if needed not amending and ratifying the 1st and 2nd amendments insuring the rights of freedom of religion and the right to keep and bear arms while they falsely call violence "peaceful assembly"

It won't be long enjoy the good times your had here as a American in a land of personal freedom that will be slipping away

I have posted many old pictures regardless and I invite you to do the same, one needs thick skin to live in our times and continue to enjoy our nation while we can and our memories of those good days that once were. When I was young and forever so long after I never gave a thought to anyone political feelings , but todays Democrats have changed that in the last 4 years to the pure negative. I am far from alone

Preferred the Peppermint Lounge/Alexander's around the corner. Ate my way through college at Mason by buying a beer and eating off their happy hour buffet!!! Cheaper than the meal plan. Good times....gooooood times.

Of outrage against the political party of pure hate that has divided this nation in the last 4 years , a weak peoples party of welfare checks and SOB stories, a party that panders to minorities only for their vote , a party who supports illegals entering and overcrowding our communities across America only for a vote A party of hate that goes back to the days of slavery they fought to keep in place

The Democrat party of ruin , when this nation falls it will be the fault of the weak Democrat excuse makers who can never lead whose political policies are unAmerican pandering and disastrous as they attack the very constitution this country stands on. Who saw the post which got your pants wet who agrees that Democrats hate has killed the USA , were all living now on borrowed time from China along with the money they loaned us we cant pay back because of your vast over spending on welfare for Democrat votes , don't say anything about Covid why did you throw race cards when Trump enacted a partial travel ban why did you not do something to try to stop Covid from hitting us in Jan Feb March 2020. WHY did you do nothing to only blame Trump 250K dead and trillions in debt was a small price to pay to get JOE in is the answer. Democrats in the US House did nothing when it counted so much to save American lives , to hell with the loss of money but that still is a huge debt we never needed as Nancy padded the bills with your prog pork programs that had nothing to do with economic relief like a swindler and a blackmailer of the people who needed the money so bad they were so desperate to get it at any cost pitting people against one another for a Democrat vote

Enjoy the time we have left at your weak hands and STFU as China builds the worlds largest navy while your pants stay wet with PC , climate change and pandering blasting the police blaming them for thug criminals actions as you try to destroy our health care our elections and our constitution which is our nations life blood that kept America free for 244 years

(1) And he pandered to get the votes of those groups then as always left them to to fend for themselves with out creating the jobs and skill opportunities' they needed to give them the self respect they deserved as President Trump was trying to do without their help , he took their votes like all Democrats for granted saying to them , "if you don't vote for me you ain't black" and continued the empty promises his party had been promising them for the last 60 years while the welfare checks rolled out into their decaying areas just as it had after every election when a Democrat won instead concentrating on more political correctness and pandering to try to keep the vote rolling in by the new all mail in voting scheme until a even more fraudulent way could be found to increase their votes after telling the American people he would heal the nation to national scoffs . "like Hitler healed Germany" as he was determined to break the constitution to appease his leftist wing of communists who filled the comment pages of the Washington Post with insane hatred of their own nation without reason and posted here on Fairfax Underground as you may plainly see from your future historic point of view as you research what went so badly wrong in the most free nation on earth , an experiment of freedom and liberty in mankind for 244 years

Before there was Memco there was Gemco , you can tell a old Memco store by the M design on their store front , they had a secret cost price code which had something to do with the actual price on the price tag they also had a grocery store in the back which made one stop shopping easy at a Memco store which had things from sporting goods including seasonal items guns and footballs to clothes watches jewelry sewing machines TVs appliances and rugs and garden items plus car parts tools all kinds of things packed into those store and a snack bar with rest rooms in the front Memco's were at Fairfax Circle Annandale Alexandria Camp Springs Maryland and later Reston plus some more . They shut down suddenly in 1982 and are still missed by long time residents of Nova . The Fairfax Memco had The original Charlie The Watch Repairer with his counter of watches and tools and workbench near the front of the store on the main aisle and a second Charley nearby sitting in a chair by his trailer on the Pickett Road hill happily waving at all who went by

We used to eat at Pizza Kaezano every week. Inside the mini mall where A&P, Dart Drug, and Trak Auto were. I remember “Trampled Under Foot”, “Fame”, and “The Energy Crisis”. Being on the jukebox. Thanks for the memory!

@ Guessing Game, The building that you have labelled "Movies". I think that was a bank. First Virginia perhaps. I believe the movie theatre was slightly east of the photo, and may be slightly newer than that.

Bill N...you are correct and I believe Kerlin's was the other side ...the older building where Rustler/Ribsters was. Also that's Burger Chef...not Burger King.

Bill that is correct

The First Virginia Bank was on the corner of Backlick Road and Little River Tnpk.

The movie theater was further down just past the Giant. In later years there will be a Jack in the Box, Pep Boys, and The Old Spaghetti Mill opened close to the theater
