That notice is clearly for a capitation tax (flat tax per person) and not a property tax.

Adjusted for inflation, that's about $26. Hard to believe you could run much of anything on that.

Oh, I know that.

I understand copyrights for "money making" pictures, advertisements, etc.

But I would suspect there is a difference when somebody posts a picture they found of a 1938 bridge over some creek, for the purpose of spurring discussion about how Fairfax County looked at one time, and trying to add to that discussion, vs. a "profeesional effort" or, advertisements.

Hence the use of the term "Ansel Adams". That was a PROFESSIONAL effort, vs. "Hey, look at this picture I found (or have) of the old tree at the corner of elm and main".

I would suspect the money making ability of these pictures, if they ever had any, is LOOONG past.

And, If you are going around posting stuff on facebook, etc, to "Share", I don't think many of these people have money-making aspirations for these pictures.

Consider the purpose...just to share old photos about FFX co and talk about them. SHARE might be a key word.

Not to make pictures that hang in people's living rooms or make coffee table books about.

Pretty different.

Sure, it can be. But de facto there may be copyright involved, so from a strict interpretation, you can't just take something and reuse/repost it.

OTOH, everybody does!

The old Fairfax Theater was converted to a Toyota dealership back in the early 1990's, and the Holly Hill Motor Lodge was razed to build Brown's Lincoln Mercury in the mid 1990's.

When Brown's closed the Lincoln Mercury Dealership, Ourisman moved the Toyota auto sales portion down the street where there more room to operate, and the theater location became a Toyota parts warehouse to service the Fairfax/Chantilly locations.

65 years has allowed a lot of trees to grow up to maturity, but the lot sizes seem too small to be Pimmit Hills. At least the parts I'm familiar with tend to be small but sturdy homes on relatively large lots.

You are correct...it is not Pimmit...I had my files mixed up from 2013. It is Bel-Air neighborhood in FC.

Those Linen Post Cards are pre WWII

I have no Image of the back of the card but I have information suggesting that it was produced 1930 to 1945.

Homes built in the late 60's had/have asbestos siding. There are still homes in my neighborhood with the original asbestos siding. Most people have just put aluminum or vinyl siding directly over the old asbestos siding as it is expensive as heck to remove/dispose of the asbestos siding.

Asbestos is a wonderful building material. The only thing bad about it is that whole cancer thing.

Perfectly safe in place if you are not working with the drawn out fibers. I would rather not burn to death in my pajamas at 5 then die of lung cancer at 80.

I wish there was a images page that had all the images from this thread without the text, but with a link back to the post the image came from.

Great photo that has been posted before, along with others taken from different angles. They have the same people in the median strip, and that cop leaning against the road sign post.

The Grand Union and Safeway would be built on the land shown in the left side of the photo.

What would be even nicer is if someone would put together an index of the photos by page. It's almost impossible to find a photo even though I know it's somewhere in this thread.

Yea!! I grew up in the Westlawn area and I remember that shopping center well. I never noticed the G and U on the railing though. No doubt for Grand Union. My Mom didn’t use that hairdresser, but I remember there was a S&H Green Stamp store there.

Thank you Sleepy. I have saved 98% of these pictures on 2 different laptops just in case Fairfax underground shuts down. I have learned so much about our local history from this forum. Many thanks to everyone who has contributed and/or commented in a positive way!

Fran Conia, I totally missed the Landmark picture.

What a mess at the light from eastbound 236 into the mall and the intersection at 236 and Van Dorn got to be a nightmare too.

Loved S&W, I could never figure out why cafeterias aren't more popular like in the South. Good food and its ready to eat, a real win with having unruly kids to entertain while you wait for dinner.

Yes. Before Springfield mall was built Landmark was where my family shopped and we hit up the old S&W quite often. Somewhere in my basement I have a couple S&W coffee mugs. Landmark was really nice at Christmas time when you had to go out in the cold to go from store to store, the place was decorated up for the holiday season bigtime!

Blanche, Did you go to the Cafeteria at 7 Corners also? My Mom hated to drive, so it was Seven Corners/Landmark/Loehmann's Plaza/Westlawn...that was it.
