Too many Ford and Mercury units looked like that. To my failing eyes, I can't be sure that any of them are actually Pintos.

It looks like the Pintos have a county insignia on them. A good way of getting rid of those pesky government workers!

Wow! Not may folks remember the Safeway on that side of Fairfax. The Safeway closed around 1973 and became a carpet warehouse - Very close to the Hi Gear.

Evidently, the scions of political correctness at FCPS elected to implement the JEB Stuart renaming this summer. Even though we knew it was coming, it's still irritating. The nearby neighborhoods were opposed, alumni were opposed, and even the current students were opposed. Didn't matter, school board was determined to ram the name change through anyway.

Look out Lee and Woodson - they are most likely coming for you next. Madison and Jefferson will probably get new names eventually.

Sorry to say that pic is not the Grand Union in Fairfax. Remember is had a roof with a peak in it. I guess the angle was about 30 degrees.

The people who named the school in a day when so many US Army veterans who defended this county lived in Fairfax were not racists, only 1 was a native Virginian on that school board others were from the Midwest, New England and the West Coast.

The US Military Academy at West Point has long studied the civil war, they still do to learn tactics of war. Your a weak jerk caught up in todays liberal PC circus, where the hell was your fake outrage 10 years ago about Jeb Stuart parrot

Take your race card and shove it, that fake play doesn't work anymore and it sure as hell does not work on FXU

My guess on this photo is that it is from the mid 1960's, and it was taken at the intersection of Maple Ave and Mill St. looking towards Oakton.

Great photo, and I am going to guess 1978 because of the larger sized Ford Bronco that came out in 1978.

It is nose to nose with the green love van complete with airbrushed mural, and decorative side bubble window.

Looks more like Church and Mill rather than Maple and Mill to me. Facing Oakton would still be correct though.

The intersection if Mill and Church is missing a huge clue as to the exact location of the photo that the old photo has.

If you go to that area today the clue is still there.

First, they could not match the color of the letters. Second, the T being installed directly over a seam is stupid as it basically disappears. Third, I am curious why there is no remains of JEB STUART on the wall from sun fading. How did they manage that? And lastly, the kerning is horrible. Good job FFX County...good job. It looks absolutely horrible.

The dentist listed on the sign in the foreground had an office at the corner of Mill and Church. That and the Freeman house in the photo were the clues I used to determine this as Church St. What's the huge clue that's missing?

Actually you are quite correct.

After you mentioned the dentists, I researched Gerald Roberts DDS. He brought in Thomas Lenz DDS in 1988 to practice at the office at 138 Church Street shortly before his retirement.

Gerald Roberts DDS name can be seen in the old photo, and Thomas Lenz DDS can be seen on the modern sign.

The clue I used was the W&OD RR Crossing sign, and that matches both old and new photos.

Sorry for the confusion, but it was interesting.

Seems like that's the location of the Pennywise Thrift Shop today. Vienna Inn not too far behind the large pine tree. Whatever the building just across the railroad tracks from the Freeman house would have been just north of the old streetcar terminal, near as I can recollect.

Sounds great!

There are roughly 150 shopping days until Christmas, so there should be something there for the entire family.

It's the incinerator stack at the dump in Lorton.

The old Maplewood estate, destroyed in 1970. Supposedly it was located at 7676 Old Springhouse Road, Tysons, VA.

Maplewood was in the general area of where the Capital One building is now, in the Beltway/Toll Road/123 triangle. The Library of Congress website has some very clear pictures, for instance at https://www.loc.gov/item/va0435/.

Good match-up on the pictures. It’s funny how they keep/reuse the same old roads through the years.

I would suspect that the photo was taken in the early 1970's.

Look at all of those children riding in peril - No seat belts, and the stylish fashions of the onlookers.

Peter Pan was a great store for a kid.

Alexandria Hospital opened in 1862.
I guesss that picture might be the "new" building on Seminary Road circa 1974.

Current Alexandria Hospital is built on a former plantation, I’ll post more if requested, but it’s not Fairfax, I guess.

Also, they had Volvos as cop cars in Falls Church? I thought it was pretty much a rule that the cars had to be domestic, so taxpayer money wasn’t spent on foreign imports...

Do the Volvo cop cars have anything to do with Don Beyer being the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 1989 or his previous political activities?

Yes it is true. The Falls Church had turbo charged Volvos as patrol cars.

Earlier. I lived not far away. That building was completed and my mom worked as an emergency room nurse there in the late-60s - early-70s.

"The hospital broke ground on the new facility in 1959, and officially opened it in 1962; Vice President of the United States Lyndon Johnson spoke at the opening ceremony. The hospital transitioned its various units to Seminary Road in phases from 1962 until the Duke Street site finally closed in 1974."

Scroll down here and they have the same picture within the 1960s. The Mustang going by would put it at least 1965.

Yes, it had everything to do with him being the Mayor of the city of Falls Church at the time the cars were purchased.

He was never Mayor of Falls Church, and I think you are confused.

There was a robbery and murder at the Hunter Motel years ago?

I've found two different names for the 17-year-old that shot and mortally wounded Herbert C. Hunter at the Hunter Motel on January 7, 1976.

One source says his name was John Casanto, while the other says John Costanzo. His partner in the robbery was 18-year-old James M. Allen.

After Hunter died of his wounds at the Alexandria Hospital on January 28, the charges against the two were upgraded to murder, and the juvenile (Costanzo/Casanto) was certified for trial as an adult.

He plead guilty on May 5, 1976, and was sentenced to 30 years in prison on June 4.

McLean came from the name of the WashPo publisher who built the trolley line out to Great Falls. Old Dominion Drive runs down the old right-of-way. But trolley service meant that both the Lewinsville and Langley post offices were closed and replaced by a new McLean PO in the general store near Chain Bridge and Old Dominion.

Not doubting you, but there appears to be a rather large hill in the background of the photo. Where would that hill be?

^^ Agreed. No hill in that area today. Might have been leveled
with development progression in later/recent years.

Assuming that the view is to the west, the background could include the bowl through which Scotts Creek runs, and then the ridge on which the Tysons cell tower now stands. I believe that point is still the highest in the area. Building 267 through McLean did a number on Lewinsville, but by blowing up neighborhoods more than actually altering terrain.

The ad predates the relocation of the north end of Gallows Road. The "Vienna" Burger Chef was at what is now the intersection of Route 7 and OLD Gallows Road, quite a good ways from where 1529 Gallows Road is today.

The tooth was there well before the name Old Gallows Road became necessary.

That ad brings back memories of the Burger Chef in Annandale on RT 236.

First it was a Burger Chef, then it became a Arthur Treacher's, then a Jerry's Sub shop, now it is a Title Max.
