Is that the old "Long Bridge" heading in to DC, by what we now know as Crystal City? If not, please share where that is. I love old pics of this area, and one of my favorite spots these days is the "new" Long Bridge Park, where the original Marriott Twin Bridges used to be

My bad, should have clicked on the link, looks like that is what I was asking about. That swampy area has some history, I might be wrong but that area used to be land for freed slaves (can't remember the name of the neighborhood) before the Pentagon went in, and farther up the shore Rosslyn was know for it's "bawdy houses" and gambling boats. Please correct me if I am wrong.

The Freedman's village in Arlington was appx where the Netherlands Carillon is now (near Iwo Jima). However more to the point of this website, these tiny Freedman's communities existed all over Fairfax County. One such village off Rt 606 in Herndon was stil populated by a few families until quite recently. I remember as a kid wandering over the bike path from sterling on a sunday morning and seeing 20 or so well-dressed older african american folks heading to an old baptist church in just that area. It was a strange experience. Unfortunately for my curiosity, in the intervening years the small community sold to a developer and is now overpriced town houses (though I believe the church is still there).
and each one of the bridges has it's own name even though we call them all the "14th" Street

@all looking for more info on the village - http://www.arlingtoncemetery.net/freedman.htm - the community's "remnants" are actually Arlington View, which is across directly across the interchange from the Sheraton over there.
@everyone about the pic - yeah, it's the long bridge like facebook said. That interchange between the airport and the bridge kinda conforms to the 395/GW Pkwy interchange. The hump bridge over the channel would be just to the left of the photo and current National Airport (see what I did there? lol) would be to the right.
are those wooden thingees next to the bridge today the same ones that are that pic? I wonder..........................

I just love this site! My husband and I have lived here most of our lives. I am 64 he is 61. Love these pictures. We were just talking about some of the old places last week and I decided to see what I could find on line. I love it!

The "wooden thingees" are there to protect the bridge from boats,barges,debris etc. most bridges have them.

The "wooden thingees" are there to protect the bridge from boats,barges,debris etc. most bridges have them.

BTW, the earlier post about the guy on Pickett Road in the 70's that used to wave at cars?
I was 4 in 1971, and I remember my mom making special trips that way to wave at the guy. Too frikin funny.

I remember that Pickett Road guy, that was back when the road bent in a different direction past the City Shop. It was always a big deal for my mom or dad to drive that direction and have him wave to us. We must have been going to MEMCO.

Anyone have any pictures of the old Gino's restaurants? I know the Popeyes in Chantilly was a Ginos and was never torn down/rebuilt. There was one at 50 and 123, which is now a CVS or other drug store, but that was torn down when it closed as a Roy Rogers. Any others out there I am forgetting?
Gino's was the only place to serve Kentucky Fried Chicken and Roys for awhile there.

My recollection was that Gino's, Hot Shoppes, Junior Hot Shoppes, and Roy Rogers (all owned by Marriott at the time) all served "Pappy Parker's Fried Chicken".

Remember Tres Amigos in FFX City? It was started by three Redskins and had at least two locations (the other being in Springfield). I think it was near the new shopping center that has Taco Bell, Sweet Frog and Starbucks is, which was actually where the old Scott's used to be. I know Shakey's was on the corner where the Hampton Inn is, then car wash, then Anita's, then.....Scotts?

This was one of the houses on the Sully Plantation complete with slave quarters. The exterior walls were brick, two feet thick for extra insulation.

@Imamoron, when: nope, no idea about that pic - was looking for another unrelated pic (LoLz) when I stumbled across that one. HAd NO IDEA that the railroad crossing even existed here.
@Shirlyh - the pic looks early-mid 60ish to me
@blanche - was the Gas Building taken over by Rosenthal? That's the only thing I know it as. It's was always their "extra car lot building" to me - been abandoned at least a decade and a half by them. But I may be thinking of another building correct me if I'm wrong - thanks.

The Washington Gas Service Building in Shirlington was used by car dealerships for repairs and car storage after WG moved to Springfield in the late 60s. I believe that the train brought pipes to the pipe yard for WG to use in their construction projects. There was also a cement factory next to Four Mile Run and Cherner Lincoln Mercery dealership before they moved out to Little River Turnpike near Annandale.
The building that Washington Gas is trying to sell now is the one in Springfield. I remember going to the test kitchens in Springfield to work on my cooking merit badge in Girl Scouts, a million years ago...
The highrise is the building in the picture is the one that is next to the Army Navy CC and next to the Glebe Road off ramp from 395 (Shirley Highway) as you are going south. I don't know the name of the street it is on.

I worked in the old WGL building in '71-'72. It was indeed owned by Rosenthal Chevrolet and was the new car get-ready department as well as a new car storage lot. The car carrier trucks unloaded the new cars there and they were parked there until they were sold.
The showroom would call down and order the car, we would clean, undercoat, and do the service and the car jockeys would run them "up the hill" to the showroom (Glebe and the Pike) for delivery.
Rosenthal also stored new cars at the old Cherner location. Until Hurricane Agnes came through in '72 and washed a couple hundred down Four Mile Run.
Another incident was when they were painting the overpasses at Shrlington and the silver paint drifted over and speckled all the new cars at the WGL lot. This caused the formation of the "Silver Paint Crew" that toiled for months getting the spots off all those cars.
I don't remember a cement plant, but there was an asphalt plant there that stunk up the place with that heavy oil that they mixed with gravel to make asphalt.

Remember before Metrobus there was the Shirley express?

Before Metrobus there were three private bus companies serving the DC area.
DC Transit, WV&M, and AB&W Transit Co.
I believe AB&W Transit operated the Shirley Express. Look at the lettering under the rearmost window of the bus in the picture.

The drive-in and the airport were there at the same time. It was quite a hairy landing having to make sure you missed the theatre's screen. There were landing lights on the Burke and Herbert bank building over on Seminary Road at one point, they might still be on the building.
The land for the airport is where the Skyline complex is located by NVCC-Alex. The owners leased the land and bought/built the same sort of private/small craft airport that was in Woodbridge until a few years ago.

There was another gen-av airfield where Loehmann's Plaza is now. And another in Hybla Valley where Beacon Mall is.

There were actually two in/near Hybla Valley...one at Beacon Mall (named after Beacon Field) and about 1/2 mile south, (which is actually Hybla Valley) down Route 1 on the same side, where Lockheed Blvd is now.

There is an Asian market in Fairfax Circle that was a Gino's, on the side where Lee Highway merges with 50 ("Fairfax Blvd") going west.
There used to be a Gino's on Rte. 7 in the Tysons area, my Mom took us there after my horseback riding lessons at a stable that was west of the Toll Road.

Tornado damage to the Pine Spring Apartments in Merrifield, Virginia, April 2, 1973. The tornado first touched down near Manassas, Virginia then tracked to just north of Falls Church, Virginia. It did serious damage to the Pickett Shopping Center and Woodson High School in Fairfax, Virginia

I remember that tornado. It ripped the roof right off the Levitz furniture store in Merrifield. I was just a kid and we lived near the intersection of Gallows and Old Courthouse Road (there used to be houses there) and I remember driving through the area and seeing the mess everywhere.

When those apartments were new, did people think they were fancy nice and/or homey? When i was younger, it seemed like anything built in 60's, 70's and 80's was old, drab, outdate and generally 2nd class even after a year of being built.

Willie Harlow. He lived on Jackson St, he had a nice little house there. I ran into him while working at Commonwealth Care Center (the old Commonwealth Hospital around 1987 88) he died shortly after, but what we as teens saw in the 70's really cannot compare to his actual life history. And WTH didn't the bus driver slam on the brakes and whup the asses of those shit-faced kids? They could do that in those days and then send them home to their parents for some real discipline.

Burke United Methodist ChurchDescription
The Burke United Methodist Church opened in a former Southern Railway train station in 1929. Former school teacher and neighborhood handyman, Willie Harlow, made the steeple and the cross, although he did not attend church services there. The congregation moved to a new location in 1979, and the former depot and church became a commercial building.
General J.E.B. Stuart had raided the old train station in 1862, and a historic marker denotes the event.
