Why take auto mechanics?
I cannot say why some do, or many don't, but will share why I did...
Having always been fascinated by mechanical devices and machines, I was bored with most electives. Already took wood shop, twice. Photography, art, and others. Bored, I needed something more.
I signed up for auto mechanics, which was two periods. Learned about how engines worked, cooling circuits, brakes, and electrical systems. It was all very exciting stuff, and even had a muscle car my senior year, as a project for class.
Never became a mechanic, and have no desire to ever work on anyone's cars, except for maybe my own.
I've saved a ton of money over the years, being able to perform basic maintenance, and even swapped the top-end of another car, for performance. Saved thousands of dollars.
I think back to when I save on repairs at a shop, as I don't get pushed around, or sold on gimmicks for service, etc., and am thankful for taking auto mechanics.
Anyways, that's my story on that elective. Time well-spent, and an investment which continues to pay dividends. Your results may vary.
