Students are not taking auto tech anymore
Posted by: Former Steger student ()

I am not an old guy. I am young male. I graduate from Fairfax High School back in 1993. I talked to Steger the other day and he told me enrollment in Auto tech has been going way down. Why are students not taking this beautiful class? Are they all too rich now and mommy and daddy will pay for them to get a new or calll someone?

No, they added another required course called Personal Finance. All of the requirements leave little time for electives.

My mom would kill me if I took that class. I'm taking pharmacy as an elective, hoping to get accepted to UVA as well!

I had Steger too.

Why are you even asking this question though? Take a look around. Fairfax kids are not fixing their own or friends cars. Mommy and daddy are paying for repairs. No one is going to school for a trade in whats become a pretty urban area since you and I were in school either. People dont like to do things for themselves or get dirty around here. They pay Mexicans to do those things.

That is crazy. When I was there the classes where 30 students each class. Last school year he had two auto tech two auto classes with 19 students each. and one auto tech 2 an 3 classes with 15 students. not sure why Pharmacy is an elective but oh well

One reason I have heard is that anything beyond the basic level is a two credit course. Given other requirements and electives that can be hard to fit into a schedule.

It's really a shame. Once you get your certs you can earn $40K per year to start. Not much, especially since you have to provide your own tools at many places. But in four years if you are competent, that rises to $80K. Stay there as long as you want, then move into service ticket writing (a sales job) or management.

Edison has Auto Tech, we fought for all 3 years of it for our son, Ironically the teacher was one of my classmates at LB.

How much do service writers earn at your typical car dealership? Anyone know?

I took Auto Shop in HS back in the 70's.I didn't get hired as a mechanic afterwards.Back then you had to have friends in the biz to get hired.
I did learn a lot about how to fix a car and how to spot a used car that needed work.Definitely worth it.

I graduated from Robinson in 2006 and Had Mr Galliot as a teacher. He was awesome. He made the learning fun and never made fun of you if you could not figure it out.

Also, a service writer for Sears makes average about $30k per year when I was there. Rosenthal Honda's service writes made $55k and now that I am at Audi in chantilly on the weekends, most of the full time service writers makes over $6t0k, one of them makes almost $85k.

Service writers get commission? Is that why they push BG products that no one needs or earlier than the manufacturer recommendation?

when eventually you are too educated to have a fx. co. dipshit gov worker insisting you listen to them repeat the contents of a highly mediocre and much padded and overprice book ... notice the test questions have more mistakes than the book does ... and are keeping in mind the county supervisor's kid didn't read and will get the job and lie about being qualified

maybe you'll understand

i'm an eye witness

sharon bullova has been using county funds to train mexicans for free at fx co facilities (not the schools) and gving them certificates of "authenticity"

they also are using funds to direct democrats to get the fast pace into the city (gov) jobs - giving them free schooling that gets paid back with 3x paychecks (taxpayer get's fucked 2x over) - and hiring these people even if they failed

to get rid of republicans and what they stand for, in this area and (same is happening in Richmod city) - all of VA - long a staunch republican state - now overthrown using money laundering by the obama democrats

"fast tracking"

that's what the democrat sacks of shit call what they are doing. hiding jobs and ushering democrats into them if they qualify or not

while using police to harass republicans, HERE, in fx co

You did not know this?

Mechanics too, for "diagnosing" that you need all those fluid changes.

Although the polite phrase is that they only get paid for the work they do.

fx co is "fast tracking" illegals and DC people at the sully police dept

sully distric manager is holed up in offices there - protected and surrounded by weapons

it used to be illegal / frowned up for county supervisors to be in military protected offices

gee i wonder why sully wanted it that way ?

FAST TRACK

for illegals etc getting jobs, anyone but that is is a republican denizen, are in other parts of bullova gov as well. schools. you name it.

let's see your ASE's or work. you couldn't turn a dime in a "willing customer, willing buyer" customer pleased and safe, environment i bet

let's see you get them fast as i did.

--------------------
my last workplace i worked overtime every day sometimes too much for FAR less than min wage paid for even 8hr/day min wage: they fired all but 1 real mechanics and good employes, all replaced with mexicans and maybe a couple asians and muslims

there is one guy, only guy they couldn't fire that stayed: they had $20k worth of tools for they told me is dead - likely tools sold by now who i dunno. still cannot find his obituary. fx co police said they didn't care

because the fx co bitch is helping the do all ^^^^ is why

the replacement workers, i believe i could show on paper and have a right to say

rip off customers "or your fired". that's fx co for you.

continually ripping of the company they work for with fraudulent warantee orders

unsafe work environment and practices

and i've seen safety stickers put on cars that should fail, and bullshit answers as to why

ties to county gov workers - married in

Why take auto mechanics?

I cannot say why some do, or many don't, but will share why I did...

Having always been fascinated by mechanical devices and machines, I was bored with most electives. Already took wood shop, twice. Photography, art, and others. Bored, I needed something more.

I signed up for auto mechanics, which was two periods. Learned about how engines worked, cooling circuits, brakes, and electrical systems. It was all very exciting stuff, and even had a muscle car my senior year, as a project for class.

Never became a mechanic, and have no desire to ever work on anyone's cars, except for maybe my own.

I've saved a ton of money over the years, being able to perform basic maintenance, and even swapped the top-end of another car, for performance. Saved thousands of dollars.

I think back to when I save on repairs at a shop, as I don't get pushed around, or sold on gimmicks for service, etc., and am thankful for taking auto mechanics.

Anyways, that's my story on that elective. Time well-spent, and an investment which continues to pay dividends. Your results may vary.

Short and simple answer is kids are lazy as fuck and don't want to get dirty these days. I would imagine it's somewhat looked down upon by all the yuppie parents in the area.

Many of you would be surprised at what service writers and competent mechanics make per year, especially those at high line dealers and shops. Think 6 figures.
