Just like the other thread, this is all part of my attempt to make my newly-purchased back yard less shitty. There's a ~30-year-old gas grill in the back yard with a gas line going to it from the house. It's a piece of shit. I want to get the line capped off & terminated safely at the house - I can do the digging to physically remove the pipe. Anybody have any suggestions for plumbers/gas

Mullen & Jamie - many thanks. That's exactly what I was looking for. Ryno - Do they really, or are you pulling my leg? I feel like a dummy asking this.

Well, yeah. And that's the big irony in this story, in my opinion - I don't think anybody really knows "The rules" when it comes to who can "officially" use the study rooms and when. I guess it'd be better to say that it's, for the most part, CONVENTION to leave people's shit in the study rooms. Most people don't mess with other people's bags or laptops or etc., but there are exceptions. The

I'm trying to dig out an irrigation system and need small rocks/large gravel to fill in the trench. We're trying to aim for a French drain type of deal. Anybody have any gravel or rock supply suggestions in Loudoun?

That's a pretty wild culture shock. I guess it figures that somewhere along the lines, somebody decided that "Indian style" sitting was offensive enough to pretty it up all PC-style. Ugh.

I think there were snaps floating around here on FFU of a Fairfax County BMW convertible coupe police car (might have been a hard top.) There's a much longer thread with pics of Fairfax cop cars somewhere around here, you'd just have to dig for it.

I absolutely love that this is genuinely ruffling enough farty trolls' feathers that they feel that they need to grumble on about teachers' salaries and students being young punks who never go to class and etc. Wake. The. Fuck. Up. And. Open. Your. Eyes. Truly intelligent people spend enough time considering different schools of thought, methods of government, scientific pursuits, etc. to be a

Yeah, that's the way I see it. But the homeschooling dude above said "Is it (it = public school) where they learn tolerance of other's beliefs as well? Cause I think you might have missed that part." You can't teach your kid to be intolerant in a home schooling situation, then go around claiming that people are intolerant of your beliefs for choosing to do so. Y'can't have your cake and eat it

"totally against homeschooling" nailed it in his first post. In fact, public schooling *IS* where a lot of students learn a whole damn LOT about tolerance - tolerance of other people's beliefs, acceptance of other people's economic status, race, gender orientation, etc. (for better or for worse.) When you immerse a child in a gender/race/status/orientation melting pot like public school from

To be fair, if you're referring to 101 out in CA, I think it's fair to refer to it as THE 101. That road is beautiful.

I love it when parenting, teaching and education advice comes replete with grammar and punctuation errors. It's deliciously ironic.

Horrible story, but this line made me re-read it twice: "The gunman had already fled, sparking a massive search." I could have sworn I read "The gunman had already fled, sporting a massive sandwich."

Amanda, here's another way to think about it: Part of what is being taught here is time management and task completion skills. I remember doing gifted & AP programs back when I was in middle & high and, yeah, the workload sucks, no questions about that, but part of the idea here is to teach the student how to decide what to tackle first - do I plow through my Algebra first? Do I jot down

Is your child in any advanced or gifted classes? Usually the work load in those classes is higher because it's expected that the student will be able to plow through the homework without issue.

I am honestly going to admit that I don't understand enough about the decision-making process that goes into when the HOV lanes should be open - what times, what days, etc. - but it would seem to me (and maybe this is naive) that just doing away with the HOV lanes would, albeit temporarily, do away with at least some of the traffic problems on 66.

I do have to second the whole "SGA is useless" thing. I went to a FC high school, I've watched my brother go through it, two cousins...any stories about the student government are always associated with an eyeroll and a shrug. What profound effects do they EVER have on anything in a high school? I mean, the greatest thing I remember the SGA doing at my school, years ago, was adding a PowerAid ven

Anyone else hear a series of dull thuds this morning around like 8:00am - 8:30am in the Herndon/Sterling area? A few actually shook our house - could hear the china rattling in our dining room. I'm assuming it may have been blasting or drilling nearby, but I figured I'd ask.
