Democratic presidents have no problem dropping bombs or using guided missiles to take out terrorists. A hell of a lot better strategy than sending in a 100,000 or so US troops to be shot at and blown up.

Obama tried to renegotiate an extension. The original status of forces agreement called for the US to leave at the end of year if the Iraqi government didn't grant US soldiers legal immunity.

Maybe you should do look up history. He did nothing more than continue a program already in place. There have never been plans to go into pakistan.

the Obama administration changed the definition of "militants" so they could bomb all civilians in an area deemed under the control of the insurgency thout having to report civilian casualties.

IN case you haven't noticed Bush invaded two countries in the name of stopping Terrorism. It cost the taxpayers trillions and over 4000 US citizens/soldiers killed.

In contrast Obama's policies have used surgical strikes and taken out many of the top enemies of the US including Bin Laden.

You can argue if Bin Laden, top Al Quada aids and Gadhafi were significant in stopping terrorism. IMO they were significant kills with little loss of American life.

We need to stop invading countries thinking we are the great democracy of freedom.

Its looks like the Obama administration my have jumped the gun in declaring Abu Yahya al-Libi dead. Al Qaeda has released a statement indicating he may be alive. It wouldn't be the first time the US has been wrong about this sort of stuff.

As deadly as drones are they can't collect DNA samples. You need boots on the ground for that. Still, I give it a 60/40 that he is dead. We shall see.

I think the Pakistan and US intelligence confirmed the kill. I think some in Al Qaeda also confirmed his death.

Look I hope your right. I read something yesterday on The Long War Journal blog suggesting that he may be alive. Without getting into too much boring detail, AQ's media wing referenced him such a way that they would NOT have were he dead. They said "may allah protect him"(way they refer to living operatives) as opposed to "may allah have mercy on his soul"(way they refer to "martyred" operatives).

Of course this statement could have been recorded/written before the death making the parsing of words a moot point.

Al Qaeda NEVER lies about the death of their operatives. At least they have no confirmed history of having ever done so.

Its debatable as to how important this guy was. He is a Libyan which gives him credibility with both Zawahiri's Egyptian "nerve center" brought in when AQ merged with EIJ (Egyptian Islamic Jihad) and the "rank and file", made of primarily of young jihadis from the Gulf states. Without getting into too much detail, this guy was able to make these two groups put aside their grievences and jealousies(Egyptians and Saudis within AQ were known to have grievances along national lines).

As to the impact of his death (if he is in fact dead); in my opinion it will certainly have a short term impact operationally on a local level. But the more I read the more I come to believe that AQ (especially their Afgani-Paki-warizistan branch) has a virtually UNLIMITED bench coming from Pakistani transnational (or "far enemy) oriented jihadi groups operating with impunity and not being targeted by drones, as they are protected by Pakistani state sovereignty and do NOT share the AQ name.

To make matters much worse this hit (if it did kill al-Liby) will do NOTHING to weaken AQAP's capability to launch military operations against the west. When trans-atlantic flights fall out of the sky I can virtually guarantee you that it will be the work of AQ's Yemeni branch (which now effectively has its own state from which to operate). Of all of the AQ divisions they are the most "far enemy" oriented, most versed in using encryption programs for communication and possesing the capability to produce liquid explosives which can NOT be detected by X-rays.

IMO, AQAP is by far the greatest threat to the US homeland. They operative independantly of "AQ Core". (Afgan and paki AQ) and its just a matter of time before we get hit, IMO.

For those that actually follow this stuff closely, it has still not been confirmed that that al-Libi is dead. 18 days after the strike, AQ's media arm released another video of him and referred to him as if he were still alive by saying "may Allah protect him" as opposed to "may Allah have mercy on him", which is what they say about dead "brothers".

Of course the content of the tape where al-Libi is speaking mentions nothing after June 4th, thus offering no proof that he is still alive either.

The real news in The War on Terror is the Yemeni govt crackdown on AQAP and Ansar al-Sharia. Nobody in the western world seems to care though.
