Wait, what? So everybody's okay with Fat Rob's choice of hairstyle for his wedding?

I don't work in an office, so I forget how that might have been a tad embarrassing at the moment the wrong coworker or boss walked by. If the comment had been that he was personally offended by it, I wouldn't have moved it.

Today LFF told a story of self control. Carla told him at Costco that he was allowed to get any dessert item he wanted as a reward for doing well on his diet. He picked up a cake but ultimately did not fall for the trick, and put it back.

Then he got a berry sundae. Self control.

Months now of not drinking, eating what his child bride tells him, limited moderate activity (still probably an improvement), and he still looks like this? That drastic of a lifestyle change equals "a pound every other week"?

Very good comments. The show would be MUCH improved if SOMEONE would disagree with Fat Ass. You would think Oscar would do it. Rob is simply incapable of it. His ass-kissing is too much for me to listen to. I had to tap out.

It sounds like they're about to lose a sponsor too. Today they all but begged us to get friends and family to visit their site and click through to stamps.com. It was a regular promo, but with language about how they're so loyal to the show so they want to give them a leg up. Sure, guys. We totally don't know that you're trying anything to keep those tens of cents rolling in.

They won't lose the "sponsor", they just need money, the 7% from Amazon sales must not be doing it anymore. Take a look at what stamps.com pays. Mike says they are loyal to the show when in actuality anyone with a website can get a link and get a commission for new customers.

This picture is safe for work.

Hmm. I guess no one will ever accuse me of being a super genius. But I learned something! It's a good day.

In my defense, I knew none of these deals or whatever are exclusive to this show. I just didn't realize what a total available-to-anyone, no brainer, no actual contact thing it is to set these things up.

Just like the "TMOS Exclusive" Hulu Plus trial offer... Even Man Grates might have a "sign up on our website" affiliate program. They have very few traditional advertisers. It's one of the things I find most annoying, the implication that stamps.com, vistaprint or amazon even ackowledge the existence of the Failcast beyond cutting an automated check. Sleep Number Bed I'm not sure of. There's no way they're generating that many sales of mattresses. One or two a month at most?

Yeah, the book world doesn't really work like you might think it does.

A smash hit, A Dance With Dragons (book 5 of A song of ice and fire) sold 650k copies.

That is Harry Potter numbers.

People don't read any more.

I assume that book was published under a non-house publisher, so if those fucksticks get 5k sell-thru, they will get another (much bigger) book deal. 5k from an indy publisher is a huge, crazy insane deal. That just doesn't happen.
If it does, they get a big (like 7 figure) book deal.

The big books that you are thinking of: 50 shades of grey, etc aren't selling that well.

Young Adult sells better: Twlight, Hungry Games, ... because people are dumb

If an indy non-fiction, non-lit book sells 5k copies on amazon.

Uggg they will get a great deal

But if this was the case, why wouldn't every podcast or satellite radio show just keep churning out horrible books? Are the Nerdist, Smodcast, Carolla, This American Life, Radiolab, all of which have 10 times the listenership doing the same thing?

It's pretty clear they're bleeding hardcore klubbers. There used to be almost 300 (still a terrible, not worth the return on investment number) ustream viewers, now it's 80 at most. The YouTube views are around 300-400, still a miniscule number. There are 1K klubbers in the OG FB Klub... seems like 5K sales would be at the high end.

I can't believe the lengths Mike will go to avoid admitting that his morbidly obese body is a large part of his problem...He wouldn't even admit he was too fat to fit in the tube...He said his shoulders were to wide...And Carla was going to let him eat a cake for supper...That's how you quit drinking and start getting outdoors and still maintain such an unhealthy weight...Hell, he could lose a hundred pounds and still be morbidly obese...Rob too

Is Mike seriously getting people to buy from his affiliate programs by insinuating that if people don't buy from them, the "sponsor" will pull their support? He seriously cannot go 5 minutes without being deceitful. I'm beginning to wonder if he even knows he's doing it. He may be so narcissistic and insane that he doesn't even know he's lying to his "fans" to squeeze every drop of blood out of them. Such a despicable human.

Or just plain ignorant. Revealing little conversation yesterday between Oscar and LFF re. aspects of TMOS' tvarying shares of proceeds of the different formats of book sales via Amazon, as well as plans for audio book. Oscar was stunned LFF didn't remember these things, as they had been the topic of several recent "business meetings." Oscar ended by saying something like, "Geez, I think you only listen if you're the one doing the talking."

The commercial yesterday was normal until the end, then Mike decided to add to it by saying that they were such loyal sponsors that it was time to give them a push for sticking with TMOS for so long. So tell your friends and neighbors, and random people you meet, but make sure they use the link so stamps.com knows where all the new orders are coming from.

My favorite part of that conversation was when Oscar was saying they get credit(paid) when people buy either the book or e-book and Mike's question was how could someone read it without buying one or the other. Oscar's answer, "I'd rather not promote ways we don't get paid for."

If I didn't already own a kindle, I'd seriously think about buying it just to not give TMOS anymore money.

wrt books

I think Nerdist, etc want to put a good product out in the world and not simply make $. So, that is why I don't think they churn out books.

Adam does churn out books. His books are basically a re-hash of the material he does during the podcast.

So, if the LFF sells, say 7k copies of his book and say 8k were printed. He made $60k for the publisher. So, a real house would give him $15k to write another book and they would print 3k of them and hope to end up selling 6k thru 2 editions.

If the book sold 40k copies, he get an advance of like $100k and a real house would pimp the book (today show, etc) and they would want to sell like 75k copies.

Nobody really reads any more. Selling low thousands of physical books is kind of a big deal.

The klub may have 1000 members, and I could be wrong, but probably only 400-500 of those are interested enough to read the book.

And a good proportion of those will probably just borrow the free kindle copy.

I can't imagine this book doing much in the general, non-listening public.

It will wither and die, just like everything else Mike touches in his life.

First of all, I would be willing to bet that Mike got some sort of discount in trade for the commercials on the "show." Secondly, Sleep # beds have a referral program, and that's why he always says "tell them Mike O'Meara sent you," not TMOS or the Mike O'Meara show, or whatever.

All InnerCircleSM benefits can be found at sleepnumber.com/innercircle. When you refer friends and family who purchase a Sleep Number bed, you earn Reward Certificates toward future purchases at Sleep Number. Referral cards with your information will be sent to you in InnerCircleSM promotional mailers and with Reward Certificates. You can also print or email them by registering at sleepnumber.com/innercircle.

Referrals must present your referral cards, the member number on the referral card, or identify you by name to qualify as your referral.

They said on yesterday's show that it was self-published through Amazon.
Quote

CreateSpace. This is Amazon’s print-on-demand service for indie authors. It lets you sell a paperback copy of your book either on CreateSpace.com or directly from Amazon.com. All you have to do is upload a PDF based on their specifications and set how much you’d like to make. (They give you a base price; you make the public price something over that.)

You don’t pay for book printing – you simply collect a commission whenever it sells. You’re in charge of the price and associated commission as well. When you upload your book, Amazon tells you what their costs are — $2.50 for example, for a 150-page book. From there you can price your book at anything higher, say $9. Under that scenario, for each paperback sale, Amazon keeps $2.50 and the shipping costs that it charges the buyer, and you keep $6.50.

I'm not buying it. Especially since Oscar mentioned that every day Mike was in the studio a couple weeks ago, he'd leave food wrappers behind.

Mike's such a slob, he can't even throw his trash in the trash can.

I loved Mike's attempt at making excuses about them...The long commute prevented him from picking up after himself?

I'm surprised he didn't try to blame his slovenly habits on genetics...You know his father used to leave a trail of food wrappers wherever he went too...

Can anybody who has read the book shed any light on the forehead to the ground worshiping they are doing at the feet of Mike's sister??

As far as I can tell it is nothing but her being mean and has little to nothing to do with the migration from Terrestrial to New Media.

Just listening to the opening from today's show...can't believe he read my review...I can believe he couldn't read it well though...There were not two utters back to back in my review, but it's not like he is a professional broadcaster with a degree from AU so I'll let it slide...

FYI....the real reason Mike didn't read the other 2 reviews is because they were too close to the truth...They can laugh at me for suggesting you would be better off just burning your $, but M.Dawson points out how they just did it to fleece their Klubb and Mike suggesting a contest built around people buying multiple copies reinforces that theory....That's why he didn't read it.... I'm very impressed that Mike read negative book reviews on the show. That sort of attitude is very unexpected. My internet is running slow today, so I haven't finished the vignette, but he seems to be having fun with it. Smart, funny and ballsy.

Kudos, Mike!

This sort of thing completely takes the piss out of everyone who complains.

Side-note: I don't think Mike remembered the suitcase story at all. He seemed to think that was a random reference to something about the poster.

I don't mean to say that they did take the piss out of this forum. I'm saying that if they had a more self-effacing, less (self) ass-kissing attitude when preparing for a performing the show, it would assuage a lot of our issues.

This was a blip. A positive and funny blip, but I doubt this is a sea change.

Mike can laugh about it all he wants, but it doesn't mean he isn't an abusive, miserable person....Reading book reviews won't change that...He's read plenty of negative letter/facebook posts before....Did that change anything?

Old Mike would never do this. Good stuff. It wasn't good just because of the text of the reviews. Mike and Robb had some good lines in there. Hell, if everyone of their vignettes were this good you wouldn't have so many people skipping them.

Mike narrowly avoided extended gun talk, but then ran headlong into playing racist Asian music and accents.

Is this evidence of show prep??? How did he know that the motorcycle seller was Asian? Was that just a Suzuki joke?

Plus he read my review and took issue with my inclusion of 'throw a suitcase at my pregnant wife.'. Well Mike, I imagine your pregnant wife took issue with a Samsonite flying at her face...

My only problem is they were trying too hard to have that "this isn't bothering me" tone, which was just as fake as their "ignore anything negative" MO.

They are NEVER real.

I'm with those who think it was a smart tactic for LFF to read the awful reviews. It's disarming, and makes it seem like he's a big boy who can take the heat as well as laugh at himself. (We know that's not true, but still). Kimmel does something similar with celebs reading nasty tweets about themselves. Funny bit. And today's opening was the best TMOS segment in a long, long time. "Set your Kindle on fire" is still a fav.

Oh sure. I bet anything this is Oscar motivated. I enjoyed the fact that I got a zing on Mike that he acknowledged.

I'll listen to it again but my impression was that he certainly got the reference. I'm certain he remembers making the "suitcase may have been thrown" reference on the show (a year ago?), so I thought it was all part of his new Magnanimous Mike character.

On a review of the video, maybe the person who grabbed the reviews didn't fully read them or didn't get the reference? It's hard to read Mike conclusively. Could go either way, but Peekza's point is well-taken.

As for the suitcase at pregnant wife one (my fav) I circled it in red, meaning this was one he absolutely could not cut. You'll notice how much he squirmed as he read it. It's Pavlovian; he can't help doing so every time I bring it up.
