chuckhoffmann reminds you about weak passwords

Make sure you have a complicated password that includes a combination of letters, numbers and special characters. Rumor has it that chuckhoffmann is developing a script to perform dictionary attacks and is also considering use of rainbow tables.

You do not want chuckhoffmann to discover your password to your Fairfax Underground account as he is close to cracking passwords on the accounts of eesh, MrMephisto, Harry Tuttle, and Alias.

And what's fuckchuck gonna do once he has the passwords? All these accounts are linked to throwaway fake e-mail addys anyway.

If he is doing this though, Cary needs to drop the banhammer on fuckchuck's lame ass right fucking now.

My God! My e-mail is actually my social security number and mom's maiden name. Was it wrong to use those?

If chuck's hacking is anything like his net sleuthing and HTML use, I don't think anyone's got anything to worry about...

It's now a two word phrase, all lowercase letters...

I don't have much to worry about, as inkahootz still doesn't know my true identity, and plus, most of his threats of violence has historically been aimed at females in real life. (He's a real big man.)

Possibly, if Chuck were foolish enough to actually write a script to attempt to brute-force someone else's password.

However, such an attempt would be comically doomed to failure, as he would have to slow down the speed of his attacks to something that would not trip the rate-limiting measures Cary's implemented on this board. This would probably limit the number of guesses to one every 1 to 5 seconds.

Given that it would probably take something upwards of 250,000 guesses to successfully crack someone's password (and probably more for computer-savvy users like Harry Tuttle and eesh), you'd be looking at a script that would have to run for a week or more, nonstop, just to get a single password.

And as I user andfuckchuckisalame-o pointed out above, what would he do with the account once he had control of it?

Chuck would be better advised to write more lame articles on his lame wiki that no one reads.

cr3at1v3 pa55w0rd$ f0r th3 w!n.

The OP is a troll. I'm pretty sure such a brute force attack would be flagged as a denial of service attack and the IP address would be immediately black listed. At least they are on my system.

Rainbow tables? Does anyone here really think the passwords here are hashed? If you have access to the stored hashes, why fuck around with cracking forums passwords?

Harry gets the win! We would offer him some lovely prizes, but we are broke.

And while chuckhoffman did not start this thread, he did post in it, twice. (Well, three times, now.)

Did you spot the anonymous chuckhoffman posts?

Oh, and to Hank Moody- there is not enough hop in Northern Virginia to get Cary stoned enough to give me access to the MySQL database underlying this forum, so don't worry about it.

I got a couple reports on this thread so I just wanted to chime in and say that everyone's password is safe.

I use a combination of PortSentry, Apache's mod_evasive and custom iptables rules to ensure that one user cannot perform a DoS on the system or brute force passwords. Chuck's "AutoIt" scripts are usually not a problem as they only make a request every 5 seconds or so (just below the threshold) but he has tripped over the iptables "max connections per ip per minute" and mod_evasive "max attempts for the same page" triggers before.

Be sure to use a non-dictionary password of at least 7 characters and you'll be fine.

And yes, if I ever do see someone specifically targeting user accounts they are iptables banned (can't even access the server) immediately.

I noticed this after my successful DDOS a few months back which was preventing me from even viewing the site from one of my neighbors networks(the one which the DDOS was initiated). BTW you need change some of the parameters/modules in the kernel because it was somewhat easy to bypass. I was tempted to allow only my ip and block everyone else's ips from accessing the site but I thought better about it.

PS You might also want to take a look at (if you haven't already) the apparmor prog

apprmor do it
