my water runs hot for ten minutes
Date: October 19, 2011 10:27PM

is there a way to adjust the heater/tank/whatever so it runs hot longer, or am I retarded for thinking that's possible? I just moved a month ago and ten minute showers are not my thing, but neither are cold ones. I do have my own water tank in my place if that makes a difference. I don't like this...help.

Sounds like there may be some energy saving device on your
tank.
Have you looked around it to see if there's something like that?

I don't see anything that looks like that, but then again I don't know what it would look like.

It may be called "Enertrol"....or something like that.

Have you called your landlord?

Get a bigger water heater tank, or one of those "on demand" types of heaters.

Or get one of those shitty water-saver showerheads that everyone hates.

I just moved. Moving is the worst and I'd rather eat glass than do it again any time soon.

It says on the heater that it uses 5000 kwh/year, whatever the hell that means.

you could always soap and shampoo before getting in. save time and energy. oh and dont take any advice from conie. energy saving device.... really? 'yeah mos def a faulty ESD you should check it'. great advice there bro.

is the shit old? (if so it may have sediment)((mineral build up))

how may gallons?

how far away is it from your shower?

all these may be factors in your lack of warmth. oh and still dont take advice from conie.

If it's fairly new and not full of the crap left behind from our lovely modern water supply, it may just be set too low. Check the thermostat.

Just keep in mind the higher you set it, the faster scalding water is going to attack you in the shower so adjust your settings accordingly.

Higher water temp in the tank equals less demand to maintain a temp you're used to in the shower. It also means higher utility costs. Your tank wont recover any faster but using more cold with the hotter water will make what you have last longer.

If you own the place, I'd suggest installing an on demand system no matter what. One of the few things that came out of Europe worth keeping.

I bet you have a broken dip tube. Drain it then pull the T&P valve out and inspect the dip tube with a see snake. The dip tube should be 3/4 of the length of the tank.

I understand the electric ones don't work well. Don't have natural gas

The electric ones work if they are properly sized. But the problem is that a properly sized electric on-demand heater would require three 50A circuits for a total of 150A.

Well that sucks. Although I can't imagine that the electric ones haven't kept pace with the gas fired models in improvements since they hit the scene. The gas models went from zero to hero in the first two years.

You may have a water heater in your apartment, but it sounds to me like other apartments must be using it, as well. Even a small one should be able to handle more than a 10 minute shower.

If it's electric you might have a bad heating element. Usually there are two, one high and one low, and if one is out then you run out of hot water pretty quick.

I had a dip tube issue with my hot water heater (covered under a defect issue), its suppose to send the incoming water to the bottom of the tank to heat up, else the incoming cold water cycles back out the tank w/o reaching the bottom... unheated...

Which one of these issues is likely the culprit if my water does get hot, but cools off after the bathtub is like half full?
