A 55-year-old Upper Macungie man locked his wife in the bathroom for more than an hour Saturday night while he sat outside drinking beers, according to court records.
Thomas Kutzura, of 6535 Tilghman St., shut the bathroom door behind his wife, propped a chair against it, and then sat down on the chair drinking beers so she couldn't budge the door open, according to court records. His wife managed to escape after he passed out from drinking so much.
According to court records:
Suzanne Kutzura told Berks-Lehigh Regional police she went inside the bathroom 7:30 p.m. and heard the door slam shut behind her. She tried to open the door, but could not. She said she could feel something propped up against the door, keeping it shut.
She told police she yelled "let me out" several times, but her husband was sitting on the chair and would not allow her to leave. At one point, she smashed out a bathroom window and yelled for help.
She told police she was afraid because she did not know when her husband would let her out.
At about 8:50 p.m., she was able to push the door open because her husband had passed out from drinking a large amount of beer. She grabbed some items and was about to leave when police officers arrived.
Thomas Kutzura was charged with unlawful restraint, simple assault and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned before District Judge Donna Butler and sent to Lehigh County Prison under $10,000 bail.
