China is now spending more on internal security than on defense. There were something like 200,000 protests in China last year. The reason why America will succeed and China will ultimately fail is that America doesn't fear its own people, China does.

Tell that to the people in Wisconsin who are having their freedom to organize taken away. Forget any free expression when your employer can fire you willy nilly. Freedom of thought and creativity---hah! And to the above poster: Internal security could become a problem here. Remember when Nixon feared his own people. Don't think it can't happen again. It is true that we will eventually win and have our freedoms, but there will be instability on the way to that end and it could go on for a LONG time. The working class will suffer as a result of the decline of unions---and that will mean people who are not in unions as well as union workers. And it's not about wages---it's about power over the workers. It's about who makes decisions in this society---will the workers have a voice or will the CEO's and Wall Street get even more power (and become even richer)?

That's bullshit, America is constantly watching it's own people and there is a strong element of fear in that. In fact I hope that America fears the people to a certain degree, just as safeguarding principal, much like you would monitor your health for fear of cancer.

In America today, the government spies on all your phone calls and emails and internet browsing habits and what you buy with your credit cards. The president can declare you to be "an enemy combatant", deny you the right of habeas corpus, imprison or torture you idefinitely, and even have you killed if he really wants, especially if you're outside the country and you wear a beard.

Now, of course, this crap isn't widespread right now, but when push comes to shove, the US government officials will get every bit as nasty as any other tinpot dictatorship, and will do so with the support of much of the population, who tend to have very nationalist views.

Well, because of powers obtained under the BUSH Administration, the constant watching is true. That said, Americans don't "disappear" like they do under despotic regimes. I don't think the U.S. government fears Americans. At least not in the way the Chinese regime worries about its people.
