Designer Babies

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. The rational side tells me It's ok. I know cloning wouldn't have worked in this case, but it seems like this is more disturbing than harvesting a clone... I don't think that makes much sense, though.

A couple grew 12 fucking embryos so it could find one that wasn't fucked up with a blood disease. They took that baby's stem cells to cure one of their sick kids. What happens to that baby? Is he thrown away? Is this more ethical than cloning? Less ethical?

It doesn't say what happened to the "saviour"... but I'm led to believe they're going to keep him and love him.

Maybe everyone should have designer babies... if the couple would've screened their first two, like they did the third, they wouldn't have gotten sick.

Should this become regular practice? Is it a slippery slope to a frightening world?

Is this old news? Does nobody have an opinion on this? Really?

Lemme no, fags.

"France’s first so-called "saviour sibling" was born in a hospital in the Parisian suburb of Clamart in late January, doctors announced Tuesday."

Now that the baby's been born, they can't exactly toss it in a river when they're done with it.

"Doctors feel confident that Umut’s sister will be cured with the cells from his discarded umbilical cord, and her monthly blood transfusions will be discontinued."

And they're not taking anything from the baby he's still using.

There is nothing unethical happening here, it's not like they will be disassembling the child for body parts, they are using the umbilical cord, which is normally discarded anyway.

The real ethical issue arises when parents want to actually design their children, like some avatar out of a game. Eye color, height, facial shape, athletic build, etc. It's very superficial of the parents to try to customize their children, and would create a future society like the one out of Gattaca.

They cultivated a child for the purpose of using its spare parts to make someone else's life better. It's not like they were going to have another child and thought, "While we're at it, let's use this baby's spare umbilical cord to cure our sick children". They grew him in a petri dish for the sole purpose of using his parts to cure ONE of their children. As it stands, it may not be so unethical, it is similar to a woman intentionally getting pregnant so her boyfriend won't leave her, but it is definitely not a clear-cut situation. It deserves some contemplation.

We are led to believe that the couple will raise this new baby and love it... but what if they decided they didn't want the baby? Would the doctors still have gone through with the process?

What about the couple's other sick child? Will they bring yet another "Designer Baby" into the world in order to cure that one?

What if these healthy babies go into mass production, y'know, to minimize production costs? Even if they're not killing the babies, they are still bringing children into the world without having the babies' best interest in mind.

Where is the line drawn between ethical and unethical?

If we have the ability to screen embryos for congenital diseases, wouldn't it be irresponsible to bring babies into this world without screening them? Is it a stretch of the imagination to see a world where these types of screenings become government mandated?

If babies are being born for the sole purpose of helping cure disease, why not use clones? Wouldn't having a limitless supply of clones be easier?

I'm not saying that I disapprove of these actions. I am actually leaning towards approval, but I think there are some interesting implications being overlooked.

You can argue ethics all you want Harry Tuttle, but if you ever need new eyes, heart, liver, spine, etc., I bet you wouldn't argue if the doctor said they can replace your organ(s) with new organs harvested from farmed babies.

Do you think doctors threw away all the research data from Nazi human experiments and the Japanese Unit 731?

Ah yes, the ancient Sanskrit/Buddhist symbol for good luck:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika

In a couple hundred more years (*) - a mere blink of Buddha's eyes - it'll get back to that meaning again.

Of course, throughout just about everywhere but The Western World the swastika never lost its true meaning:

NASA is built on Nazi data from human experiments, and the Nazi scientists that we brought over after WWII,,,,ethics tend to take a back seat when there's an advantage to be gained

I don't mind the idea of trying to prevent a baby from being born with an illness, because who wants their kid to suffer and/or die?

However, it is going too far when you begin choosing specific traits that have to do with cosmetic issues as opposed to actual health.

How would you feel if this type of screening became mandatory?

Isn't that an arbitrary line? What's the real the difference? Why is one better than the other?

The screening doesn't need to be mandatory, but it should be an available option. As for the latter, having brown eyes vs. blue eyes is straight out of some Nazi playbook regarding racial makeup. It has no bearing whatsoever upon someone's quality of life.

This thread reminded me of a similar topic, eugenics. I would hope one day people will look at the single woman at the bus stop with three or four children and wonder why that woman has the audacity to bring multiple children into the world when she cannot even take care of herself.

Long term welfare recipients, the chronically unemployed, violent criminals, people with below average intelligence, etc. should not be able to have children. The world would be a better place, and a good part of the cycle of poverty would be eliminated within one generation. Jail populations would also dramatically decrease within 20 years.

I agree... but what if the government decided it would be in the public's best interest to require these screenings? Or, an even more plausible situation, insurance companies denying coverage on unscreened children?

Just wait until the data from my latest experiment it released... I have proven, using real science, that brown eyed children are 72% more prone to pancreatic cancer than blue eyed children... It is a liability to have a brown eyed child...

Oh sure it will be - as noted in my post, my daughter doesn't have a clue about Nazis - or Communists for that matter - and neither of us could discuss the slightly-older World War I for more than a few minutes without running out of things to talk about.

Have the last World War II veteran die, have his kids die, Nazis literally will be a footnote in a history book somewhere and the swastika will get back - in the Western World - to what it's meant for thousands of years.

Check out the images link I gave above - BILLIONS of nonWesterners already know and respect the swastika.
