Always happy to see attacks on these social networks. Where is the civility now days is a popular question asked as of late. How about etiquette and protocol?

I noticed awhile back when in social settings with several people, diner, parties, gatherings of any type, there could be a conversation going on then 1 2 or 3 people would suddenly pull out their phones and start texting or what ever. I was taught that it is rude to whisper in public and I see no difference here. I remember a time when at dinner or whatever if you took a phone call your assistant, butler or server what ever would pre screen it and only if it was important you would excuse yourself from the group and privately take care of what ever business was at hand return and say thank you to your guests for their patience and understanding. Now it's just a given that at anytime anyone can be off in their own little world. What? Are we all just going to turn into a bunch of animals with heard mentality?

Lots of folks need to enroll in a good finishing school and be taught manners all over again if not for the first time.

All things in moderation. I really like Facebook. I don't have that many
friends (60) on my list, at least nothing like my kids who have hundreds.
They are a collection of childhood friends, Army buddies, college friends,
former co-workers (we're all retired now) and some relatives. Out of that
group only one seems obsessive but we all enjoy watching her posts anyway.
If you don't like someones posts you can always block them but I've only
had to do that once with a high school friend who has become a religions
fanatic and posts prayers constantly. Facebook can be a lot of fun if you
manage it moderately. I have no desire to get a Twitter account. I don't
text and I have a plain old basic cell phone that I only use for incoming
and making calls and only carry it when I'm out of the house.

I also find it not just annoying but downright sickening when some of the self righteous get on and post little tidbits of what they think is profound wisdom that we must read and they are the only ones enlightened enough to bring us to the light .Like;

"There comes a point in life when everything revolves around someone other than you, when "fun" no longer means drinking too much and clubbing but instead it means board games and bedtime stories, and sleeping in means 8 am. Becoming a parent doesn't change you, realizing that the little person you made deserves the best and all of your free time does! Re-post if you are proud to be a "boring" responsible parent!"

Then the people that are sure they care about whatever more than most anyone. They'll post some bullshit then dare the rest to repost or run the risk of not being nearly as caring as they are.

I started FB when I was in college and was for college students only. And it was actually fun and useful at the small school that I went to. It started to suck when they opened it up. I stopped using it after I repeatedly saw people post photos of their operations and gruesome injuries. (for real.)

Social networking is beneficial if you use it properly, such as keeping in touch with friends who live hundreds/thousands of miles way or that you just don't see too often. I've found it helps keep those friendships going and when you do manage to get together, you can sorta pick up midstream and there's not a lot of catching up. But if you start posting every random ass thought that comes into your head and commenting on other useless thoughts it loses a LOT of purpose.
