bought a lot of yogurt today
Posted by: Mr. Misery ()

so I was in the grocery mart, and they had 10 Yoplait yogurts for 5 dollars; now, I know a deal when I see one; they call me 'good deal McGillicuddy'........sooooo, I decided to go for it: I got the 10 yogurts for 5 dollars. The thing is, I can't remember the last time I even ate yogurt. What am I going to do with 10 yogurts?? They'll probably go bad before I even get a chance to eat them all. This is why I never buy milk, or cheese, or bread, or mayonnaise. I never get around to eating it.

SO, long story short: I blew 5 bucks on 10 yogurts today.

The key to getting a good deal is to walk around the grocery store and eat the food you want, and just walk out.

I don't care for the Giant housebrand yogurt I think they've changed the mix and made it a lot more liquidity(?) probably some money saving scheme by the assbags who run Giant these days

They had a show on the other week about coupon clippers - people that spend every day of the week clipping coupons, getting coupon packets from coupon clubs, scouring weekly grocery ads and then bombarding Safeway, Giant or whatever with $1500 in groceries and eventually paying less than $25.00 for the lot.

It can be done if you only shop sales and do not care about product loyalty. You also are essentially focusing your shopping on packaged items (meat and produce is almost never priced to be free).

What was appalling was then seeing these people's basements. They had enough toothpaste, Kraft BBQ sauce, deodorant and Wylers lemonade to last - literally - two years.

Why dont some of the local food banks hire these folks to be their shoppers? A year's worth of toothpaste (for free) and a year's worth of deodorant (for free) would go a long way for the homeless.

I've seen stuff like this. Some woman showed how she could buy a couple hundred bucks worth of groceries for less than a buck. They made her out to be some kind of genius, but I thought it was bizarre. Spending that much time clipping coupons seems obsessive. And when they showed her pantry, you realized her entire family was living off shit like canned soups, mac & cheese, rice a roni, and Chef Boyardee microwave bowls.

I recently read something like that too ITrade about how people can buy their groceries for <$25 or something for a family of 4.

I think it's pretty impressive but this is what I figure - there is an opportunity cost to searching and scouring all these sites and driving to different places etc to get these deals - maybe they have it down so it's seamless. I'd imagine there is a learning curve to it all and that keeping track of all the deals requires time. If you're not making money or are a very low-wage earner I could see the case for it. Me, I'd rather just go to one place, get my stuff and be done. Sure I'd like a good deal, but I'm not willing to schlep here or there to save $3 on 12 packets of bagels.

I value my time.

I value my time with virtual dollars.

I value my time at least at $60/hour (a real wage I made more than 10 years ago as a W2 contract programmer that I've instantiated as my "cost of time" ever since because it's easy to split into minutes!).

When one values one's time, taking time to do something takes on real cost.

Driving the extra 5 minutes to the Korean market instead of stopping at Giant costs me $10 (bidirectional, NOT counting the 50+ cents/mile of driving). If I'm just trying to get some eggs or milk or bread there is no way I'm going that extra distance.

Cutting out coupons takes a LOT of time; we rarely use them (in fact, I can't remember the last time we did use one). I'd rather buy what I want than what the coupons say I can buy (big exception - Costco coupons; we use them a lot, however you only need ONE coupon to buy any number of different items on coupon-sale so there's no searching for/cutting out coupons - the saving is automatically calculated for all different items at the register).

I saw that! My wife commented about expiration dates on a lot of that stuff. There was one family that would buy 2-3 months worth of stuff at a time. I guess it saved them money, but it was all spaghetti and shit. You know they have to shop for meats and veggies like the rest of us.

One guy had such a huge order he had employees helping him get his 7 carts of shit around and then had a special order of like 1000 boxes of Total in the back. He paid under $100 for about $1500 worth of stuff....and a lot of it went to his church's food bank. I think for him it was the thrill of the kill so to speak.

My comment is that is looks great in theory, but those people spend a lot of valuable time planning out their shopping. The question is how much is your time worth? I'm content to save 10 - 15 bucks in coupons once a week and be home in under an hour so I can do other things.

I don't think I've ever used a coupon. I'd say my time (to me) is probably worth $100 an hour. If I were buying a TV and could save 100 bucks by driving out to Reston (1/2 hr) and back, I'd do it. If I had to go Warrenton (1 hr) and back to save that $100, I'd just buy it local and not waste the time.

It has been said that Bill Gates would be wasting his time to reach down to pick up a $100 bill he sees on the ground. Doing very quick rough math on an estimate of his net worth, say, $30,000,000,000 then we can say that anecdote about him is pretty much right on the money; it would "cost" $100+ for him to pause to reach down and pick it up.

I don't know about your yogurt, but a lot of the brands use corn syrup, I don't know how safe that is for a small animal like a cat.

I'm this way a lot too. If I go on holiday and my final destination requires a bus trip or taxi, I'll see if I can just get a helicopter or bush plane. It may be a couple hundred dollars extra but it saves having to mess about for hours getting to your spot. And like you said, I'm impatient and don't like wasting time especially for inefficiencies like that.

A friend of mine in Reston actually flies out of BWI rather than Dulles if he can get a ticket for ~50 bucks cheaper. I never understood that. He lives ten frickin minutes from IAD, but will drive 45 miles out of the way just for that cheaper seat. Some people don't mind the inconvenience I guess, but I'll never understand that.

Man, I was looking for a particular CD once and was convinced that McKay's Used CDs/Books would save me a few dollars. The problem is that McKays is like a pawnshop, so you never know what they may have (this was when they had the Centreville location). I must have stopped by 5 or 6 times with no luck. I then realized with all of wasted gas, I probably spend the equivalent of 3 full priced CD's. And let's not even consider the amount of time wasted. Idiot. Never again.

Well, there are other reasons for using a particular airport. If he's looking to score upgrades and he has low elite status on United, flying out of BWI will probably be a better bet than Dulles given that everybody and his brother is United elite at Dulles.

I remember I had one flight out of Dulles to the West coast last year and the "standby" list to upgrade had over 100 people on it. I trumped them all because I decided to use miles.

That I can understand. If I could upgrade and enjoy a business or first class seat on a long flight, yeah, it would be worth driving to BWI. But this dude was trading a ten minute drive to IAD just to save a few bucks. Having to leave an hour earlier and drive, plus the risk of getting stuck in beltway traffic seem like too much of a hassle.

I once went to Iceland via Icelandair out of BWI...left my house 4 hours early...you'd think an 1-1.5hrs would be okay to get there. It took me 3hrs to get to BWI! Had to beg and plead for them to hold the gate - which they did thankfully. I hate that airport. Tis a joke to call it Baltimore-Washington too. It's on the bloody doorstep of Baltimore, you can see the skyline from there. But then no one would want to fly there if it were just called Baltimore Airport.

On a similar note, I had a friend like yours Meeper - he lived in NW London so it was like 20min to Heathrow, but he found a cheaper ticket out of Gatwick which was like 1.5 hrs away and he ended up spending more getting to Gatwick than the difference of the ticket...but he just wanted to be able to say he got his flight for $X I suppose...I don't know. Doesn't make sense to me either.

The only reason I'll fly out of BWI is to save on flight time. For example on a recent trip I found could get to Tampa direct by departing from BWI. I couldn't find a comparable flight that didn't leave at the crack of dawn from IAD or DCA. Total flight time was about 2.5 hours. If I left out of IAD or DCA it would have involved a connecting flight with a total trip time of 5.5 to 6 hours. Fortunately traffic cooperated and I made it to BWI in just over an hour.

Yeah, but if you live in the eastern and northern suburbs of DC it's the most convenient airport. When I lived in PG county there was no way I'd drive all the way out to Dulles. It was either BWI or National.

Does seem kinda far though when you live on this side of the Potomac.
