John Lone played a somewhat asian man in Bernardo Bertolucci's very fine but fatally flawed feature film "The Last Emperor". Lone is not a 'full' asian man. And this is a problem that plagues the entire film in my opinion. Bertolucci could not commit to authenticity as a director on this project. Instead of filming the movie in Chinese, or the language of The Forbidden City, and in other languages, where appropriate, along with the use of subtitles, he took the easy (yet infinitely more confusing logically) way out of just having it all in English. So you have the Last Emperor, a little Chinese boy, speaking English. And when his British English tutor comes from abroad to teach the young Emperor English, of course, our titular her, the Last Emperor, is ALREADY SPEAKING ENGLISH. He's speaking English while supposedly being taught to speak English in the movie......that is simply too far a leap to make for me as a viewer....suspension of disbelief can only stretch so far before one inevitable begins asking the logical, simple questions that a skillfully and artfully made film might otherwise eschew......"why is the chinese boy speaking english?" "this film is set in Germany, yet Dr. Frankenstein is speaking English with a British accent..."


that is the problem I have with The Last Emperor. I've said it before, I'll say it again. The director did not COMMIT.

Like him or lump him as a guy, whatever-----but Mel Gibson COMMITTED when he made the Passion of the Christs and Apocalypto, two films that are in fact quite good, if you can look past the politically correct gossip rag fog that surrounded both films at the time of their release.
