Camping, 89, believes the Bible essentially functions as a cosmic calendar explaining exactly when various prophecies will be fulfilled.

The retired civil engineer said all his calculations come from close readings of the Bible, but that external events like the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948 are signs confirming the date.

"Beyond the shadow of a doubt, May 21 will be the date of the Rapture and the day of judgment," he said.

The doctrine known as the Rapture teaches that believers will be taken up to heaven, while everyone else will remain on earth for a period of torment, concluding with the end of time. Camping believes that will happen in October.

"If May 21 passes and I'm still here, that means I wasn't saved. Does that mean God's word is inaccurate or untrue? Not at all," Warden said.

I always laugh when someone who survives a catastrophe says "God saved me".
But at the same time , others died and were hurt, or rendered homeless.

To get the word out, they're using billboards and bus stop benches, traveling caravans of RVs and volunteers passing out pamphlets on street corners. Cities from Bridgeport, Conn., to Little Rock, Ark., now have billboards with the ominous message, and mission groups are traveling through Latin America and Africa to spread the news outside the U.S.




So what is going to happen when May comes and goes, and they are still on Earth? Will they feel like idiots, lose their faith, or just act like it was a miscalculation?

Lets hope no politicians buy into this silliness.
People that believe this sort of thing are more likely to do something about it and that's pretty disturbing.

It also says in the article that one of the women is going to Iraq and hasn't bothered making plans to return. I can respect peoples' faith and admire people who have the courage of their convictions, but that is just stupid and irresponsible.

As far as what 'ProVallone' said, Just because someone feels like they have been spared a fate, does not mean they think that God favored them over anyone else. It simply means that we live in a world where we all die and that God and HIS plan have spared them. As in; the flood took out the houses on the other side of the road because that was in his plan, you were just the benneficiary of said plan.

Eesh has it right, there is always someone somewhere proclaiming the end of times - been going on for ages. I remember in the 80's watching programs about how Nostradamus predicted the end of the world sometime by the early 2000's...we're still here. Islamic nut jobs are constantly chattering on that such and such an event means the imminent destruction of non-believers - we're still here.

The next big loony one imo will be the Mayan end of the world scenario which is coming up I think in 2012.
