Did you know- about the "Virginia Defense Force" ?
Posted by: curious ()
Date: December 18, 2010 09:08PM

I'm not even sure how I happened upon this group- about a week ago I was looking through the virginia.gov site and I found this-

Virginia has a kind of citizens militia group that is not connected to the larger military at all- they're all volunteers and can join or quit at any time. Ostensibly they were formed to look after Virginia National Guard bases while the troops were deployed, but now that we have a professional military (and by that I mean not drafted) that job is redundant . . .

So basically, there are a bunch of pseudo-military VA gun nuts running around and training (on the weekends) for the opportunity to become a real militia . .

Here they are doing "riot training" with pool noodles wrapped in duct tape :-)

As far as I know, they are unarmed and answer to the governor. Basically glorified boy scouts.

THe real psudo-military gun nuts you have to worry about wear badges and occasionally shoot unarmed optometrists.

I met a couple of these guys about three years ago and thought they
were both insecure types who were looking for an identity. One explained
to me that one of their possible duties was to direct traffic in times
of emergency such as an evacuation of the DC area. (as in if the "dirty bomb"
goes off) They also struck me as the stereotype "wannabe" cop or soldier
but for some reason couldn't make the grade. (I noticed one woman in
the video who was just too fat to function) After looking at a couple of
the other YouTubes on this group it seems they may have a useful function
such as search and rescue. I don't perceive them as anything to worry
about and they're essentially harmless unless fully lubricated with
alcohol. When I spoke with the members about the traffic thing, I told
him that I have my own evacuation plan and would not follow their orders
in times of emergency and would go as I pleased, not as I'm directed. I
also threw in that I would be heavily armed myself and would refuse to
surrender my guns under any circumstances. He really didn't respond to
me on that one and I suspect he was in touch with his "wuss-factor" well
enough to know that I meant what I said. Here's another short video
that explains more:

"I don't perceive them as anything to worry

Haha, could be said about many people . . .

Yea they are officially unarmed, but I'm sure that's just on the job-

"They also struck me as the stereotype "wannabe" cop or soldier

the video who was just too fat to function)"

That's kinda sad, I think a real group of normal Virginia citizens could be a great VDF group, but it always seems like these things tend to attract freaks-

I'd love to play around with a boat or go up in a small airplane for the state of Virginia!

Would you please define "normal"? If I look around at the local
Home Owners Association members I don't see many that I'd want
on my flanks in a firefight. I once belonged a a Neighborhood
Watch group in Arlington and it turned into a constant squabble
over bullshit issues. One woman got so angry and verbally abusive
at a meeting she had to be ordered to leave. She refused and
declared herself President of the group and told us she would
sue us all in court if we didn't recognize her. End of group.

If you join up I'm sure they'd let you. The vid says they only get a few
dollars for fuel on authorized training exercises. I'm sure they'd welcome
your contributions.:)

There is absolutely no reason to join. You don't get paid like you do in the Guard, and you have to buy your own uniforms.

The only reason someone would join is if they were National Guard rejects and they wanted to play soldier on the weekends.

I don't see anything bad about belonging to the VDF, especially in the
search and rescue function. They could be sitting in a bar watching
the tube and getting sloshed but it's their choice. I joined a search
for a lost child several years ago and the stereotype who showed up was
a "good ole boy" in camo hunting gear, a pickup truck, and a hound dog. I noticed there were no BMW driving yuppies around. Some more "official" help would have been nice. BTW, the kid was found safe and sound sleeping in a
neighbors barn.

Dear Wally Cox,
I'm sorry to hear of your misfortune-

"Would you please define "normal"? If I look around at the local

on my flanks in a firefight. I once belonged a a Neighborhood
Watch group in Arlington and it turned into a constant squabble

Groups tend to do that- why, I really don't know.

As for "on your flanks in a firefight"– don't worry, I am a good shot. I'll try to help out the best I can.

"I noticed there were no BMW driving yuppies around." – They don't tend to help people much do they . . .

In 1990, the Virginia General Assembly launched an investigation of its state defense force on reports that "a brigade was saving money to buy a tank and other units were practicing ad hoc drug raids," according to a 1991 article in The Nation.

"We were getting complaints," said Gladys Keating, a former Fairfax County, Va., delegate who led a reorganization of the Virginia Defense Force. "We had one guy walking around thinking he was a reincarnation of Patton."

But the problem was mostly lack of oversight, Keating explained: "Nobody had come down and given them a good explanation of what they should be about."

They're part of the military's "14th and I" contingency plan. They're only called up when the invading force has made it to 14th and I Streets downtown.

No, not really. If these people wanted to join the military but didn't want full time commitment, they could have gone in the Reserves or National Guard, it's not that hard.

In a real domestic situation that would require the involvement of the National Guard, the last thing the Guard commanders would want to contend with is a bunch of poorly trained, poorly equipped and clueless civilians pretending to be the military in the midst of a crisis. The Guard would have enough problems on its hand without a bunch of well-intentioned but stupid "Barney Fifes" running around.

Their ranks are a joke too, there is no reason for a Major General to be in command of only 1000 soldiers. In the real military, a Lieutenant Colonel or at most a Colonel would be in charge of a group this small.

Looking at their pics, it's full of majors and above, on the enlisted side it is full of First Sergeants and Sergeant Majors. It looks like they hand rank out like candy.

Once again a lack of research leads to vigorous stupidity.

The Virginia Defense Force falls under the 2nd Amendments "well regulated militia" clause and is within the state's constitution. Given the federalization of the National Guard, it remains one of the only resources available soley to the Governor. When military budgets were slashed in the 1990's to create our mythical balanced budget, that decision put Reserve Units and State National Guards into a new role. The previous model had these uniformed resources replacing active duty personnel stateside; two wars and a full combat role depletes their ability to perform the stated mission. This has hit the National Guard hardest and makes state militia's like the VDF essential during local emergencies.

The recent weather event in Tidewater serves as an example of a typical deployment. VDF personnel augmented the National Guard and state law enforcement in dealing with transportation and logistical challenges 8" of snow created for the area.

All of the members are volunteers, fully trained for their limited role, prohibited from carrying weapons, about 30% are prior military and law enforcement (retired and currently serving), and are just looking for avenues to serve. I would think people giving back to their state and community out of pocket would be welcomed in this culture of entitlement.

Next time get it right before you engage in flights of fancy. Perhaps a debate on the federalization of the National Guard would be a great place to start.

Former Coast Guard Officer and VDF member.

I'm curious,

"The recent weather event in Tidewater serves as an example of a typical deployment. VDF personnel augmented the National Guard and state law enforcement in dealing with transportation and logistical challenges 8" of snow created for the area."

What, exactly, did the VDF do in order to assist the citizens of the tidewater region with their 8'' of snow?

Also: "vigorous stupidity" is the unofficial motto of fairfaxunderground.com

In latin: Strenua Stultitia (Perhaps someone could give me a better translation)

What exactly is "fully trained"? As far as I can tell from VDF's website, when you join this organization, you receive an orientation pamphlet and some sort of mentorship as training.

You don't go through basic training like Guardsmen or active duty/reservists...what about your officers? Are they trained on the same level as military academy/ROTC/OCS grads?

As I said in previous posts, if you want to join the military and don't want full time commitment, you can go Guard or Reserves. Your organization is about 1000 people strong, I hardly think that is enough to manage a statewide emergency.

What good is a militia with no arms? What's with the cammo uniforms? And why does a state government need the federal 2nd Ammendment to authorize it to raise it's own disaster relief force?

I appreciate a detailed response that can be answered.

1. (when you join this organization, you receive an orientation pamphlet and some sort of mentorship as training). Each individual receives a minimum of 2 types of training - everyone goes through boot camp within one year of joining. As a former DI, it is not the "real thing". But these are not warriors and the needs are very different. The second type is for a specialty which is all on-the-job training. It is much like a MOS in the Army or rating in the Navy or CG. Half the rates in the Coast Guard are strikers - no classroom - all on the job training, so this is not unique. There is also training programs and certifications offered by FEMA that are mandatory by position.

2. (what about your officers? Are they trained on the same level as military academy/ROTC/OCS grads?) 30% are prior service or law enforcement, so that covers boot camp or OCS for 1/3 of the VDF. Everyone else goes through basic and for officer commissions - in the past it was based on factors like college degrees, work experience, etc. Today your officer rank is also based upon prior service - if you held the rank of 03 (Capt in the Army, Air Force, Marines or LT in Navy and CG), you start there. For both officer and enlisted there is a structured process for promotion that resembles active duty and reserves. Addressing the issue of "is itlike OCS or ROTC"? Of course not, we are not asking these individuals to led people in combat or into extremis. The training they receive equals the mandate of the VDF.

3. (As I said in previous posts, if you want to join the military and don't want full time commitment, you can go Guard or Reserve). These people choose not to take advantage of that option. I served both on active and in the reserves and run a fast growth company. I cannot be at the mercy of government bureaucrats - been there, done that, last time it almost bankrupted us. Additionally some members are to old (26 is the cut off for active duty) and now have the flexibility to volunteer. Because they choose to receive no pay, buy their own uniforms, and pay for travel makes their service less honorable?

4. (Your organization is about 1000 people strong, I hardly think that is enough to manage a statewide emergency.) I addressed this in my original comment - a 1,000 people makes a huge difference when the National Guard has been federalized and is over seas. They are stretched very thin and appreciate the help.

5. As for your donut comment - try this one - anybody who has not served in uniform is a parasite on the nation? A rather unfair comment but in the same tone.

VDF Officer Sir,

Could you answer my previous question as to what the VDF did specifically to assist the citizens of Virginia after the snow in the tidewater region? Thanks-

Edit to add:
Also, don't bother answering remarks like the doughnut comments. On the internet these people are known as "trolls" because they are trolling (like fishing) to make other people mad. Just ignore them and they won't come back.

No, it doesn't. I understand that it is strictly a volunteer organization. However, you have a group of people that drill and dress in BDUs that obviously want to be soldiers, once again, you can go Reserve or Guard. If they want to be police officers, then they could go that route, hell, even police departments have reserve officers and auxiliaries.

Since your organization has little to no weight or physical fitness requirements and training standards compared to the military (yet strives to emulate the military), you have to wonder if it is full of people that couldn't cut it in the military. (I heard your 30% were former police or military comment numerous times.)

Someone joining the VDF is analogous to someone that wanted to be a police officer all his life and ended up as an $8 an hour security guard.

(What good is a militia with no arms? What's with the camo uniforms? And why does a state government need the federal 2nd amendment to authorize it to raise it's own disaster relief force?)

First, take up the "no weapons" with state government - previous versions of the VDF were armed, This is not up to anyone in the Chain of Command. The challenge would be who issues the weapons and conducts training. Given the uniform situation - most people would find purchasing an AR-15 or M40 price prohibitive.

The VDF needs a uniform so they are authorized to wear prior Army utilities. The current Woodland camo was military issue 2 versions ago. Remember these people pay for all of their stuff and buying surplus uniforms makes economic sense.

Your question on the state not needing"authorization" is correct, I simply added it to make the point that the VDF is in full compliance with both the federal and state constitution. I agree with the premise of your statement.

The VDF Signal Battalion, which has several police dispatchers, deployed a mobile command post that integrates audio, visual, and text communications. It is especially useful when traditional communications are down - i.e. cell phones, internet, etc. We were handling emergency requests for assistance and directing resources.

I'll speak for myself - I don't want to be a cop or a solider, and have served both on active duty and reserves. This fits my flexibility. Two examples to make my point - we have a medical unit which consists of doctor's and nurse's. They can't take your route and pursue their professions. Our MP unit consists of cops and state troopers who cannot serve in the reserves or National Guard and keep their day jobs. 20 years ago this was possible - today these guys are in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But don't think the pictures posted in this forum represent what the average VDF member looks like. It is a reasonable cross section of the state and most are more fit than the average couch potato.

(Someone joining the VDF is analogous to someone that wanted to be a police officer all his life and ended up as an $8 an hour security guard.)...simply a bullshit answer, no response required.

Yeah, because there is no such thing as reservists or Guardsmen in the Medical Corps, right? Is that what you are telling me?

You are bullshitting as I have known reservists that were State Troopers that were called up for deployments. Their position with the State Police will still be waiting for them when they return home. Anything else would violate various laws that protect reservists and Guardsmen when called up for duty.

> we don't

So.....you are para-military in organization and structure, complement the National Guard, you boast that you are a genuine militia, yet have no weight or physical standards for your members? How is that working out?

eesh - lets see, I will slow down and write slower

In the National Guard and Reserves, you will be deployed. If you are in the VDF, you will stay here. Therefore if I want to serve and not go away for 12 months, I can do the same thing - only for no money in the VDF. Some make that choice, others don't. Also you have the age issue, if are over 26 for active duty and reserves, over 40 for National Guard - the option is not available.

As for the para-military organization and weight and physical standards, other than MP's - it is not essential to perform most roles. When it does, we deploy people who are fit. Given the slovenliness of the average American and that fact we are a volunteer organization, it is indeed not pretty, but We make it work.

Does that cover it or am I confusing you with facts?

LOL, now you are resorting to personal attacks when called out on your lack of knowledge and the fact the VDF is a playground for people that were rejected by the military.

Again, you say that weight and physical standards aren't necessary, yet you pride yourself on supporting the National Guard and police agencies.....which do have weight and physical standards.

I love your statement "When it does, we deploy people who are fit." That's a pretty pathetic mentality; out of your 1000 available bodies, what percentage would you say are fit for duty?

Are you in this picture "VDF Officer"?

eesh, not sure what you want to hear. I have responded to all of your questions. Given I have only 13 years active duty, 4 years reserve time, and 1 year in the VDF - you're right - I am sure compared to your extensive knowledge of all things military - I don't know anything.

Most of the VDF members were not rejected by the military, it is a choice they didn't make. Now they have and are proud of any contribution they can make to Virginia. If my unit is representative of the entire 1,000 force, 50% would be considered civilian fit, 25% military fit. Our problem is not the VDF member, it is the physical condition of society. We don't have a farm where we grow our own, we get people who represent the entire population and make it work.

As for my picture, that is not my unit. However if you would like to go one-on-one in the next triathlon, let me know.

Unless you are willing to post your DD214, I take your statement with a grain of salt.

That's an interesting number of years in service with the Coast Guard, especially as an officer. You see, Coast Guard has really high retention rates, especially officers, and if you had already done 13 years, why not just finish your 20?

My guess, one too many shitty OERs kept you from advancing past O-3....right? I think you have proven my point the VDF is for people that can't hack the military.

Enjoy your career as an officer in the VDF, your commission is worth about the same as the printer paper it was placed on.

Actually, I'm quite okay with fewer people in government uniforms carrying weapons, in my opinion we already have more than enough of those. Armed private citizens, on the other hand, I'm cool with.

To chime in... I first learned about the VDF in the early 90s at AP Hill of all places. IIRC, they were helping to run radios. "Who the hell are you guys," was my question. The way they explained it was that in times of extreme crisis and manpower problems, they would help work comms, staff NG armories & depots, and backfill more administrative jobs. It's sort of like members of a Volunteer Fire / Rescue Squad that don't fill the line jobs, but volunteer to do paperwork and run bingo night... douchebags like eesh may laugh at that, but that sort of volunteering does free up the front line guys to do their jobs. If the VDF's model for service parallels that, then good for them.

That said - and I don't mean to besmirch the organization as I can see them filling useful roles in the state's overall emergency management structure - I had to laugh at tomahawk's comment about them being Civil Air Patrol wannabes as that was my original impression of them. They struck me as being sort of like the CAP minus (1) any focus on physical fitness, (2) the dedicated SAR training, (3) aerial patrol capabilities and training, and (4) the valuable active duty / academy recruiting angle for youths. Overall they struck me as less paramilitary and more like the local CB clubs that volunteer at large public events.

I do have a question for VDF Officer: as you explained it, you have to pay for your uniforms and are not permitted to bear arms while serving in a VDF capacity, yet I could have sworn that at the last few Nations Gun Shows at Dulles, the people manning VDF booth were shouting, "get a uniform and a gun," as their pitch. I'm pretty darn sure that they had a sign indicating that, too. Does that sound kosher to you? Additionally, is the description I was given over a decade ago accurate: that you all help guard depots if the NG is deployed?

All of your questions have been answered, some several times - you just don't like the answers. Interesting canard to make the validity of your argument my career and the posting of a DD-214. In none of our exchanges have you offered any facts, just opinions. It would leave one to believe your thinking is emotionally based.

The choice is simple, accept the VDF as an avenue for people to serve the State of VA, or not. It will continue to function regardless of your derision.

Observer of Things

Thanx for the comments. The services provided by the VDF range from doing paperwork (can't escape it anywhere) to running sophisticated communications equipment that the National Guard doesn't possess. In some places we are just replacements, other places we are at the center of the action with unique capabilities - just depends on the function.

As for CAP wannabes, the VDF has an Air Wing - not much wannabe there. We also have a River Unit that has similar capabilities as the Coast Guard. I would put that function above the Auxillary and below the Reserves.

Your comment about the CB Club is not far off in that most of the members of Signal (communications) have ham licenses and are authorized by the FCC. The communications function is critical and we try to find people who have technical expertise in a critical function and willing volunteer.

I like the gun thing, we deal with this all time when people express interest in joining. The comment about "get a uniform and a gun" is not kosher at all. Given the physical standards issue debated here already, it is too dangerous for the state to put people into roles that require the use of firearms. Can you image running it like 1770, when the original VDF was formed, giving members a gun to take home and put over the fireplace????!!! The lawyers would have a field day. What would happen in a state emergency are the law enforcement members in MP Units would PROBABLY be permitted to carry their service weapons. I don't know if that has happened, but can see where it is possible - I would not hesitate to issue that order. With guns it is all about maintaining control.

That being said, if you randomly selected 10 VDF members and had access to their personal arms, you would be impressed.

Most VDF units muster at NG Armories, so that is one our roles to secure and manage in their absence.

I think that answers all of your questions, if you have anything else - I'll be happy to share what I know.

Seriously, you guys are a bunch of posers. You have no authority or responsibility to do anything. If there ever was a civil uprising, you would be more of a hindrance than a help.

I kind of have a funny vision of this bunch also. I used to know a guy who was into police scanners and radios and was a wannabe to the first degree. Wanted to be a volunteer fireman but with his nervous twitch and stuttering problem, he just "kept f-f-f-flunking that d-d-d-doggone t-t-t-test!" He was mocked mercilessly, who knows whatever happened to him, probably in the VDF for all I know.

I'll give these VDF folks a break, they're trying to do something, whatever that something is.

Well.......in your post, the one where you claimed you would never post again, you said that "attached is a much more accurate photo - what happens on our off-hours." Don't try to change the story just because it was discovered that you lifted that pic off a Czech airsoft forum and then renamed the photo "offduty VDF."

Really, so the Virginia Defense Force now has Steyr AUGs? Because those are clearly what they are in that pic.

I hope Major General Taylor doesn't read your posts and sees what a bullshitter he has for an officer.

Not to worry. He doesn't understand the interwebz; he's too busy playing with his scanner, waxing his mustache, and shaving the sides of his wierd haircut.

Lt. Stansbury's kind of cute. Never cared for girls in uniforms, though.

Pics 1 and 2- Shit, they've already infiltrated!!

Pic 3- Otter and Flounder join Delta HOuse

Pic 4- Headly has got it going on with the exotics

Tomohawk is right,Stansbury is cute, but the rest of the pics are boredom.

Seriously, I'm sure there are some wannabes, flunkies and goofballs in the ranks, but if everyone of these people are volunteering their time and energy, good for them and thanks.
