Expiration dates

When something has an expiration date,for example: December 13 2010
Does that mean it will last that long even once its opened?
Also, what's the difference between something that says "sell by" as opposed to something that says "Use by"? Will it last longer if it says "Sell by"?

Here in Fairfax County, the dates mean nothing. Sniff it, or let your boyfriend try it first to see if it makes him sick.

The expiration date is a "recommendation" or simply to insure its maximum freshness, use by that date. Most canned goods are only good for 2 to 3 years. After that they start to break down and lose their flavor, texture and quality.

And if it smells of skunk shit like someone's mother that you've been banging, throw it out...lol
