The Lighter Side Of War/Military

Post anything that shows some of the better, less visible aspects of life in a war zone, or even the Military in general. Good moments, humor, etc.

Here's the first, courtesy of bored Marines manning a checkpoint in Iraq (Route Bugg, S2 (I initially thought the "S2" referred to Marine Intel., but a Jarhead over there who served with this guy said it's for-

"1/1 Bravo Company
3rd Platoon, Second Squad
Sierra Deuce – Suicide Second"):

I wonder if "The Taliban Times" has humorous cartoons in it. The lighter side of insurgency, with Predator jokes.

I was in Germany with an intelligence unit. Our Colonel was "parade happy"
and every Saturday morning we had to pound the pavement for officers
photo ops. We had a WWII vintage Howitzer on the parade field that was
fired for special occasions. This one was for officers pinning medals on
each other for being there. The MP's were in charge of firing the cannon
and they would load it with a blank round the night before the parade.
Someone got ahold of a dead cat that was really "ripe" and shoved it down
the muzzle of the cannon and nobody bothered to check it out in the morning
before the official firing. When it went off, it sprayed dead cat all over
the bleachers where all the big brass and their cronies were sitting.
Nobody ever found out who put the cat down the barrel.:)

Bwahahahahahhaaaa.....Good stuff, if true.

There is a ceremonial gun on most all war ships. Some COs like them fired more than others.

I call bullshit on the cat howitzer story. I don't believe they would leave UXO unattended in a loaded howitzer overnight. I don't believe it would be pointed at the bleachers whether a blank or a cat-round. I think somebody would have gotten seriously fucked up by the cat shrapnel if true and that base would still be on lock down to this day until they caught someone.

Bullshit legend.

Sorry Bounce House but I'm going to have to call you on this one. I was
there and saw it from the middle of the parade field. This was an
intelligence outfit at the time and not artillery. The muzzle was pointed parallel to the bleachers but it spewed to the sides as well as in front.
As far as the MP's not checking the barrel (which was capped after loading
the blank) they thought it was perfectly safe because it was only a few
yards from the MP Hq and nobody would mess with it. Wrong. They
started loading it the morning of the event after that.
