try it, or "use it" first hand at all.

It's actually only an oversized iTouch, it doesn't have phone capability. It looks neat but isn't portable unless you carry a man-purse... at least a smaller ebook reader could possibly fit in a large coat pocket. You know those PADDs in the later Star Trek series? They should have been that size.

Lets see...
1. No camera.
2. It may not be able to use Flash, which shuts out almost all streaming video used today.
3. It uses MAC OS so development is going to be annoying.
4. No USB ports, so no syncing with a phone, camera, USB device, external storage, etc.
5. It only has 64 GB of storage. Less than HALF of a netbook.
6. The battery CANNOT BE REMOVED.
7. You cannot upgrade RAM.
8. There is no SD card slot.
9. Adding 3G support costs an extra $130 for the 3G chip that costs about $7 normally.

So for $499 I get, basically, a big ass iPod with 16GB of RAM. I can dock with a keyboard that I also have to buy. And for an extra $130, bringing the lowest cost model's price to $629 I can use a 3G network. Oh, and I have to decide to buy the 3G version first because you can't add in 3G later.

Want 64GB of RAM? That'll be $699 or $829 if you want 3G. Not counting, obviously, the service plan on whatever 3G network you're using.

The sad part is, people are going to buy this piece of shit, but I suspect they'll buy only the regular version and not the 3G version.

In a year it will be less than $200, where it should be. I think at that price, it might be a nice gift for friends or relatives who read a lot.

There is no chance that the price will drop by more than 50% in a single year. Apple is already making very little profit, or losing money, on the 16GB on 3G version, which is why 3G costs an extra $130.

iPhones started out at $600. Within a year, Apple had slashed the price by several hundred dollars. I think the same thing will happen with the iPad. Even more so, since the economy is much weaker than when the iPhone came out.

Yep, people said the same things when the iPhone came out. The price on this will come way down and the features will increase. Apple actually wanted for it to have more capabilities, but was forced to hurry it out the door because of the growing demand for ebooks, which is what it's really for.

It it NOT meant to be a computer or laptop. It's simply a device for entertainment and presentation. If you want a laptop, get a laptop.

The next generation iPad will have camera (front facing) and other teleconferencing features and a whole bunch of other stuff. One rumor is that the next generation might be solar powered. Apple has been working on solar for the iPhone for a while, so it might be true. Is this device for me? No, but I know of a lot of other people that have been waiting a while for this type of device. If I spent a lot of time on airplanes or train, I would love to have something like this.

BTW, they already have a lot of accessories for it, including a laptop type of case.

For movies, internet and email its fucking cool.

I will wait for it to get jailbroken and at that point aint nothing stopping people from fucking with it.

Jobs was right about one thing.
Netbooks are not good at anything.

My wife loves her Netbook and loves to read, so at the right price the iPad would be perfect for her. And per Numbers' observation, this isn't meant to take the place of a laptop. It is Apple's response to the Kindle and other "readers." It just happens to combine a Reader with the functionality of a Netbook.

It was released over the summer, at $599. My old phone broke right around Labor Day, on the same day Apple announced they were dropping the price by $200. So I said "fuck it" and bought one.

When the iPhone was launched everybody was falling over themselves to get it. A friend and I went to the Apple store on launch day just to see the ruckuss... they could have charged admission for all the people lining up just to wind their way through the store and try it.

With the iPad, many in the technical communities and consumer electronics circles are panning it as just not that earth-shattering. The name alone has way more jokes circulating than positive comments. I think they'll make money on it, but I also think it will end up being more of a sideshow product like the AppleTV instead of their main revenue sources of Macs, Macbooks, iPods and iPhones. One could argue it is a neat device and somewhat interesting as a novelty, but I don't see how anyone can argue that given the hype leading up to the announcement that the unveiling wasn't a flop by marketing definitions.

I think it is more than a novelty, but I also think it is way over-hyped. Apple obviously took technology it had already developed for the iPhone and simply wrapped it in Kindle packaging. I do think there is a market for this, but it needs to be priced competitively (which it isn't). The money will be made from iBooks, not on the device itself. And I agree, iPad sucks as a name. They would have done much better calling it iReader or something that defines it better in the minds of consumers.

Are you seriously trying to tell me that Apple's attempt at competing in the eBook market, which isn't *that* lucrative of a market, is to release a $521 (with tax) eBook reader? You don't need 64 GB of RAM for an eBook reader, and even if they dropped the price by $200, it would still be more expensive than the Kindle, which likely will go down in price in the next few months if Apple's new tablet shows strong sales.

Part of this, and I suspect it'll come out in the coming months, is that this isn't a product that Apple needs to sell right now. They have tens of billions in cash reserves, so why release what appears to be a half-finished product? They could easily spend another few months adding in the things they're missing (usb, flash support, camera, etc.)

I suspect they're using it to prototype some new hardware tech (Apple bought a small semiconductor company a while back) that may be the precursor to them breaking away from Intel as their CPU supplier.

I used to have Apple a lot in terms of computers (Both at school as a kid, and at home (Even though my first Computer was an IBM on MS-DOS) ), and I have the 3rd Generation iPod (Which I still use, and it works better than anything else in regards to Mp3 music). However, despite my interest in the iPhone, they don't have it on my carrier, so I went with the Hero (OS is Android 1.5, soon to be 2.1). I can't say enough about the Android OS, it's amazing. I love how it's open source as well, and you can pretty much develop Apps. anywhere, on any device. Apple on the other hand really annoyed me with their Apps. protocol. I was interested in creating some iPhone Apps., until I found out that I needed to buy an entirely new CPU (Apple of course), and when I attempted to rent one, it seemed like extortion. They attempt to completely Apple-fy you, and force you to buy all of their products, in order to develop and profit off of programs meant for their devices. Android is light years ahead of Apple in terms of developer/programmer friendliness (In my view), and flexibility (I can even root my freaking handheld device, and make it do just about anything within its hardware capabilities). Not to mention the fact that Android had 8,000 Apps. back in October/November, but as of December/January that number had already jumped to 10,000+. Apple has around 100,000, but Android is gaining, and gaining fast.

I fully agree. While I have become completely accustomed to my virtual keyboard on the Sprint Hero, I would absolutely abhor such a thing on my laptop/desktop. It's next to impossible to satisfactorily type on a virtual keyboard while not staring directly at the screen and/or keys full-time while typing. On my hard keyboard, I can look away and watch tv while typing. I can also type much, much quicker on a real keyboard.

The best thing would be a HW keyboard that slides out, and can be bent to an angle, while a stand pops out the back of the monitor. If they were serious about not making this simply an "iPhone on Steroids", they would've thought of such details.

Because it is meant to be used in an easy chair or on a couch, like Jobs demonstrated. With a folding keyboard mechanism like you described, it wouldn't work on someone's lap. And you couldn't hold it ant type on it... too heavy and two awkward an angle to do it. And if you are going to use it on a desk they you'd be much better off with a laptop or netbook. And adding all of that would add to the weight, which is arguably already too much for gaming purposes.

Better to allow use of the Mac's wireless keyboard over Bluetooth for those that really want to use a physical keyboard with it occasionally.

And an opener of 300k doesn't mean that is sustainable. I'm not saying it is or it isn't, but if the device ends up sucking people won't buy it. If it ends up rocking, then all of the people who were waiting on real-world, real-user reviews will buy it up.

I'm sure that it is great for what it is meant to do (except for the lack of flash support), but I'm not going to buy one until it is more of a netbook and less of an oversized iPod.

to be fair, large sites have started supporting html5 video playback. safari is based on webkit which is implements many html5 capabilities. hulu isnt as popular as you may think but it's probably going to start supporting html5 as everyone else has begun to do. most small video sites use the open source flash player JW Player so it's goes to reason an open source html5 video player will/has been released soon/already and they will use that too.

video playback isnt going to be as restricted as you think. im hoping many people turn away from flash because they player is proprietary and has yet to be properly implemented via open source and probably never will be.

BTW, Flash is nearly dead and will be no longer be needed when everyone starts using HTML 5. YouTube and most of the sites that use Flash videos have already started making the switch. I believe that by the end of this year, Flash will be mostly gone.

absolutely not. flash will live on for a long time. do you know how many online games are written in flash? "but why," you ask. the answer is because it's has much better tools to make it and is much faster than javascript (the counter part to actionscript) which is slow in every browser except chrome (v8 js engine ftw!).

there is also the issue about support. html5 does not have full support in any browser and IE wont be supporting it until IE9 which is likely to dawn in say... 5 years.

flash is alive and well, it's not java.

Nobody knows, Jobs apparently thinks there is an unseen demand for something between a laptop and a smartphone.

I don't think there are as many "blindly loyal" people as you think. The reason people like Apple computers is because they work well and are generally more reliable and easier to use than windows based machine. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

As far as mp3 players and stupid shit like that, people tend to gravitate towards the iPod because of the name more than the manufacturer.

The iPad is not something I'm interested in, but I know lots of people that are into ibooks and it's great for stuff like that, which is who it's aimed at. It's NOT meant to replace your laptop or desktop. It's simply an entertainment device and maybe also for presentations.

You guys make it seem like your offended by it somehow. If you don't like it, don't buy it and it will go away.

All the complaints about no keyboard crack me up. You all sound like dinosaurs. A lot of people prefer the touch screen keyboard over a traditional one. Certainly easier to clean. :-)

Like many things, the first generation of the product tends to fall short of the goal. It will be interesting to see where it goes. I know people that computer geeks and old farts that can barely figure out how to start AOL that went and bought them. It's a new toy. People loves new toys.

the hardware itself is decent though underpowered. however, the software sucks and onscreen keyboards lack tactile feedback which is a large problem if you want to type fast.

the best way to utilize this device would be to have a stand for it, wireless keyboard and replace the OS completely.
