McLean Brats Attempt Music

What the hell is this?

The worst part about this is the $20,000 their parents invested in this crappy video for a bunch of talentless 12-yr-old brats.

I wonder where they attend now. Langley? McLean? Flint Hill?

I can get behind the message of this song, but the delivery lacks oomph.

There is more production value in that video than necessary.

Well, let's be fair here:

1. I'm sure some sound quality is lost when uploading to YouTube.

2. The actual recording quality is pretty good; all the instruments are crystal clear, not fighting with each other, etc.

3. The actual delivery is the artist's job. Telling the artist, "that delivery sucked, do it again" is the producer's job. The sound engineer's job is to put the mic in the right position in front of your face.

I worked in one pro-level studio before, and the engineers were pretty open about the fact that, if they don't like what you're doing, they'll tell you everything sounds great all the time. When they like what you're doing, they'll help you from the production side as well.

4. Everyone involved in making this video and recording that song, except for the kids, is a cruel bastard.

I may spare the sound engineers, but I would smash their soundboard...

The website hasn't been updated since 2006, so this video is at least three years old. The tone quality of the lead singer was awful; lets hope is voice changed.

The title is not original and, well, is something I hear every night around my kids' bedtime. Inside the lyrics there are no words leading to an epiphany or original creative thought.

It' pretty complicated and time consuming. If you are willing to go through the process, you cut the code on youtube next to the word "embed" located to the right of the video, then you paste it in the box on this forum. Real pain in the ass.

For starters, these kids didn't do anything other than "sing". I'm pretty sure the parents wrote it, played the instruments and probably recorded it on their PC.
I can guarantee this wasn't recorded in a real studio.

Mephisto, this would have been a very easy mix. I'm thinking there are only about 8 tracks used, including the drum machine. As far as I can hear, there are no clever studio techniques employed and the lead guitar sounds pretty ugly (more likely the musicians fault here though).

All in all though, these kids probably are pretty popular at school and will start bagging chics soon. Who knows, one day they might actually learn to play the instruments themselves.

I gave it a sincere watch. I tried to be fair and open minded and I don't want to be mean, but I want my 3 mins 20 back.

OK, so production quality was lost in the Youtube upload a few years back. That still doesn't explain why these kids didn't push the thing. Some showed talent, and I do not like calling the lead 'singer' out, but he was flat.. Very very flat. A monotone singer ought to explore other areas of music. Somehow my life is less enriched now.

It reminds me of an old mall thing I saw before where for 20 bucks, one could do a vanity music video, except this did use a bit more money.

If the kids in this production read this, understand that my critical post is mostly disappointment as with the resources you apparently had, you could have done so much more. It came off more like a private joke.

And you are stupid.

Very very stupid.

The lead singer has as much rock 'n roll attitude as Mick Jagger would have had at 11 years old -- probably more!

Granted, he doesn't have Meat Loaf-type chops, but does he need them?

I don't think so!

Video Games elicits laughter and nods of recognition each time a new crowd hears it -- from kids as well as their forty to fifty-something parents. This comic ballad mocks the stereotype of today’s youngsters as spoiled rotten video game addicts. Both parents and kids alike relate to the song's portrayal of the obsessive gamer and his exasperated parents. It's all clearly tongue-in-cheek and these hard working boys appear anything but spoiled.

It's not just the song's send up of the video game craze that is driving its popularity. The boys clearly work well together and kids respond to their energetic delivery. Hunter Watson's engaging performance is Mick Jagger cool despite a refreshing absence of explicit lyrics. But what really makes the song stay on replay in the listener's mind is the up tempo pop-style melody, reminiscent of the best of the Monkees and other 60's groups but with
an edgier sound thanks to its rap influenced rhythm.

Dig the boys giving the late, lamented Ramones a run for their money (yes, they play all their own instruments):

You fail to recognize that the crowd is laughing AT them. People like you will never understand the difference. It really doesn't matter though, as long as you have enough money remaining to buy them a law degree.

Which also explains the lack of live performance videos.

So which one of these untalented brats is yours?

I hope you play this video at his wedding (I'll bet you will too).

Well, none of the kids involved in this farce are mine. Mine has a voice that he chooses to use for speaking, with no misguided aspirations of being a rock star. If you appreciate flat 'singing' more power to you. As to attitude like a rock star, youtube is full of no talent people who have fun showing rock star attitude. It still does not make them a vocalist of any substance or measure.

Having the ability to post ones vanity videos for the world to see is valuable for many reasons. As a proof of talent simply by posting or spending cash, I'm afraid not.

On the money spent, it was the choice of those involved to invest their money so I won't judge that motive directly, yet I will say as an investment for fun and expression of their kids, very good. If a serious attempt at reaping a financial gain, sorry, no.

As you guessed, I am not living in a box, but that is irrelevant. I got where I am by making wise choices rather than spending on folly.

I didn't say these kids are spoiled, but defending that point to me when I didn't suggest it indicates you fight that accusation a lot, so logic dictates they may indeed be spoiled. I don't know them and do not care to know them, so it matters not to me.

Ever think that there is a mix of appreciation in those who have actively gone to see them perform? I am certain there is laughter both kind and cruel. Nods of recognition? Of what? Just the obvious statement about video games?

Frankly, I dislike that I saw this, as it is tough to be honest and not sound cruel.

It must be--actually, it is--my class hatred bubbling to the surface, and I know that this video is several years old at this point, but I actively loath these three little twats (especially Tab) and their helicopter parents---nice shout-out to the parent's huge home, ability to rent a limo and the State Theatre, and wrangle the children's prep-school toadies to appear in the video...

And that cut-and-paste defense of the "band"....

"Video Games elicits laughter and nods of recognition each time a new crowd hears it -- from kids as well as their forty to fifty-something parents. This comic ballad mocks the stereotype of today’s youngsters as spoiled rotten video game addicts. Both parents and kids alike relate to the song's portrayal of the obsessive gamer and his exasperated parents. Dig the boys giving the late, lamented Ramones a run for their money (yes, they play all their own instruments)....."

PUHLEASE!! "Video Games" was an unintentionally ironic train-wreck, but trying to perform "Blitzkrieg Bop, and for someone to actually attempt to defend them ("Dig the boys...") by parroting their website, I'm almost shorting my last gulp of scotch through my nose....

How sad, the rank heresy of "Tug" Hunter, on his way-expensive guitar (what happened, dad, you never could be a musician, but you found some way to make money and live in McLean, and transferred all your foiled dreams on your spawn?).

You want to hear real music? From a real band not much older than these rich toads? Try the LA's, or the Undertones. The Undertones weren't much older than the Black Out Band, came from Derry, Ireland (in the midst of "The Troubles"), didn't have any rich parents to push them from behind, yet managed to produce a classic album for less than Tab's guitar cost...

No doubt Tab will abandon his erstwhile bandmates as he ages, and will somehow (because his parents will browbeat every hapless teacher into giving him better grades than he deserves throughout his entire high-school career) get into an "easy" college, and will make his way into a fraternity, only because he's a "legacy," thanks to his father being a member of the same greek organization during his own madcap "double-popped Polo-shirt" days. Then, no doubt Tab will slip a Roofie into some unsuspecting girl's drink, strangle her while attempting sex for the first time, and will somehow manage to beat the rap, although the lawyer's fees will bankrupt his parents...

Strong statement to follow...

The lead singer of Black Out Band has an older brother who is also a "singer" for a "band" called Tenby. Let's just say singing doesn't run in the family. I think it's fine for parents to support their kids even if they honestly suck, but they way these kids' parents pour thousands into their vanity projects is disgusting.

Well, I guess I should say thank you to WTF??? for linking the big brothers myspace page. I took a stroll through the music. Not terrible for actual genre arrangement, and singing was mostly needing voice lessons, I'd say.... But.

In the first track listed, "Look Who's Alone Now" at 2:45 there is the worst harmony of voices. It was like hearing several cars screeching to a crash. What was a mediocre non hit song was suddenly a failure. Seriously, go check it out. While there, read down the right column and note they are unsigned. No kidding. Muahaha. Now I am getting somewhat mean, but honest, and I like alternative genre music.

Also, another thought occurred to me last night. These youth have put themselves out for the world to see, and as such, there will be emotionally tied people who turn a tin ear and laud them highly. Others will be thoughtful but blunt and simply say "trash" or similar. If you ever have watched the opening shows for American Idol, you see early episode contenders here, maybe.

I will have to look them up on iTunes and see if they fall under "Free" music.

The album has 7 lifetime ratings, all from 2007 and all highly scored. I guess Tenby has 7 people who are emotionally tied to them, such as family or friends.

Did a quick google and went to page four and still saw no mention of Tenby. Odd since the myspace page ought to have hit the stats.

It's almost as if they did a cover of their own song. At least we know the singers in this last post created a farce and not some self indulgence vanity ploy.

There is a virtual cottage industry of tribute/cover versions of this EPIC song -- which, if anything, demonstrate what a clever, well-constructed and catchy little song it is!

Admittedly, the original is performed by slightly goofy 11-year-olds -- but how did your voice and/or guitar/drum chops sound when you were 11? More horrible than magnificient, I suspect, and certainly not within a quantum-leap of the coolness of this instant pop classic.

Haters, continue to hate... while the Black Out Band laughs, and heads straight for the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame.

Comparing these no-talent Momma's boys to Neil Young and The Ramones doesn't do them any favors.

The fact they made a video and posted it online made them fair game to be critiqued. At least a future employer can see something about their future hiring prospect. Unlike a beer bong image on facebook, this won't bar them from employment unless its in music.

Are you kidding me??

"Instant pop classic"?

Instant hater classic is more like it.

Do you hide outside in the dark and press your tear-sodden face (and other body parts) against the glass doors of the prep school hall when the Black Out Band plays--before security escorts you out...again? Do they represent some sort of man-boy-love ideal to you?

Or...are you a subtle genius, writing tongue-in-cheek, just for laughs?

"kid rockers who are quickly becoming one of the hottest groups around! These childhood friends light up the stage and get the people on their feet wherever they perform their danceable mix of original songs and well chosen covers. The band’s members, Hunter, Matthew and Tug are pre-teens, but their music appeals to the young and not-so-young alike without being the least bit cutesy.

Their single, Video Games, elicits the laughter of recognition from kids as well as their forty to fifty-something parents each time a new crowd hears it. This comic ballad mocks the stereotype of today’s youngsters as spoiled rotten video game addicts. It's all clearly tongue-in-cheek and these hard working boys appear anything but spoiled. Most surprisingly, Hunter Watson's performance is Mick Jagger cool despite a refreshing absence of explicit lyrics. But what really makes the song stay on replay in the listener's mind is the catchy pop-style melody, with it's wry references to a diverse group of artists, from Dylan and the Monkees to the Black-Eyed Peas.

When not making music or playing video games Hunter, Matthew and Tug are just regular kids who hate homework, vegetables and waking up for school, and love sports, movies, fast food and just about anything on wheels!"

from http://www.blackoutband.com/

"Like many of their friends, this group of 11-year olds; Hunter, Tug and Matthew - had each studied music for several years and decided to get together as a group in 2005, and were soon practicing twice a week.

The idea for Video Games came about when their music coach found the boys playing video games every time he turned his head. Probably in desperation, he told Hunter he ought to write a song about video games. By the next week, and with suggestions from his bandmates, Hunter came to practice with the chorus and first verse.

Playing together, they worked out the basic melody. But were a bit stuck for more verses. Hunter's Mom, Judy, heard the song and couldn't get the catchy lyrics out of her head. As the mother of two sons she had lots of experience with boys playing video games, so just to amuse her family she jotted down what became the next two verses and emailed them to Hunter's Dad. Everyone agreed the song had a certain something and it was pulled together into its finished form, appropriately names "Video Games".

Saturday mornings, as the sound rocked up the basement stairs, visitors just couldn’t stop humming the contagious tune. And soon the boys were asked to perform at local schools. As they started playing the song, kids in the audience were up and dancing and the teachers were caught up in the excitement as well.

Plans were soon underway to capture the performance in a music video so others could enjoy the show. It was made and is now in distribution.

They have recorded 4 more originals - Graffiti, 6th Grade King, Recess Blues and their own cover of Louie Louie. Now working on their next two original songs, like video games, the new tunes are about experiences in the daily lives of this pre teen age group"

ha haha hahahahahhahaha their mom wrote the song for them. ha haha hahahahahhahaha

Okay. I was stoopid enuff too play that YouTube clip "Video Games".
My ears began profusely hemorrhaging so I could not make it through the entire thing. I began to reflect on how this song was a bit irritating and kinda stroked me the wrong way as like some pedo headbanger song when I realized the tune was stuck in my head. I went about my normal day at work but had to visit the supply room three different times to get new keyboards because I kept stabbing the darn things with my pencil like a maniac because I jusy couldn't manage to get this horrendous jingle out of my head. When I finally got home that night I knew getting to sleep would be hard so I began to pound back shot after shot of Bacardi 151, I keep this stuff laying around for the special nights with the ladies. Before I knew it I was sound asleep tipping over sheep in the field. As I was tipping the sheep I noticed a foul odor. I began to sniff the air trying to find the source of it and derermined it was wind, I mean gas, like from your ass, gas. These frickin' sheep were cutting cheese left and right all around me! I began to think what the hell when I realized that a zipper was showing on one of the sheep. I began to unzip the zipper when the sheep said hey mister, what the hell do you think you are doing? I continued to unzip just to see some little prick jump out. I took a good look at him and realized this was that girly little boy from that obnoxious video! As I thought this, the rest of the gang unzipped thier costumes and had guitars already in hand.
I turned around and began to run as fast as I could. The little pricks began to chase me. As my speed picked up, so did the tempo as these musical prodigys rocked out to the Video Games track. Before I knew it the scenery changed into the Wizard of Oz land. As I ran down the yellow brick road I came to a grand castle amidst a sprawling green field with wildflowers of every color. I began furiously banging on then castle door. I short troll answered the door and asked for the pasword. I told him i did not know it but there was some people chasing me and he shut the door. I banged on the door again and the troll answered and said "password please" again. I had no idea what to say so I said "Fisting"?
The door opened to reveal a huge impressive mansion. I asked the troll to quickly shut the door and asked him to help me. He said the man who can help you is behind that curtain. I said that one over there and he said yes. So I proceeded to lift the drapery as I would if peeking up a teachers dress and saw the wizard. He looked oddly familiar. In fact I was sure the wizard was none other than Cary from FFxU. I quickly put the drape down so he wouldnt see me. I shouted "hello in there"? The wizard replied YESSSsssss. I said Oh grand wizard please help me I am being chased by a group of untallented child musicians. He said "understood. What can I do for you"? I said please ban them and make it so I dont have to hear them ever again! He said what are you going to do for me? I said how about I help post more homosexual/ transgender/ scat porn pics to waste space on your server. He said thats an excellent idea. I will ban them from existence and you get crackin' on those hardcore images.
When I left the grand castle I peered around the meadow and saw huge vines where those foul little boys stood. I began to climb the vines that reached upwards to a unseeable hieght. When I finally got to the top I was back in my black leather seat and shivvvvvver inhaled as I awoke to conciousness.
I then hit the post message button.

Toodulloo.

Again, best of luck with that. You do realize that (unlike you) the "authorities" are well-versed in First Amendment law, and are (unlike you) familiar with the definition of slander.

A word to the wise...

A Texas appellate court just upheld an argument... made by a state inmate who says he was slandered by a corrections officer who allegedly called him "queer" within earshot of other prisoners.

In the Texas case, the inmate claimed he was automatically slandered and should not have to prove damages because being called gay is "defamatory per se." In laymen's terms, that means the phrase used is so well-understood to be damaging, that no damages need be proven....

When Daniel L'Hommedieu of Holly Springs, N.C., put his name into an Internet search engine, he found a Web site called DanLHommedieuLovesMen.com that appeared to claim he is gay. The site listed L'Hommedieu's former address and phone number and barely attempted to hide his true identity. He found out who started the site and is suing the creator for defamation and libel.

The implication here is that as far as the State of Texas is concerned, to call someone "gay" is to imply that they are inferior, defective, or somehow not as good as "normal" people.

Doesn't every gay person in Texas now have grounds for a defamation case against the State of Texas?
