excuse me whoring for the company I represent but why not get a Dell?

a Dell Inspiron 9300 laptop is in your price range and is outrageously nice for a laptop. The 6000 is a bit smaller and a bit more portable. You can stack features onto both that make them a bit more expensive.

lol

vaio's are so hopeless, but if you wanna deal with that service nightmare be my guest

seriously, they may be feature-packed, but sony uses second-rate laptop parts for those features so prepare to deal

I agree with rstidman. Sony uses crap hardware. I bought a vaio a few years ago and all I had with it were problems. First the damn thing wouldn't boot up half the time. After they found out what the problem was they did a recall after the warrenty period was up. But even though it was a recall they STILL charged for the service. Then about a year after I owned it the hinges on the thing broke. It's now acting as a print server. At least Vaio's are useful for something.

Dells are pretty good laptops. And if you ever need to get service done on it, they're pretty quick. I've had to return a few of our Inspirons for repair. They next day a box to you and you next day it back (free of charge). Usually I'll get the repaired unit back within 5-7 working days from the day I shipped it. I haven't heard a whole lot about Toshibas. But I have heard their CS isn't all that great. I just trashed an old Toshiba I had. It was an old 133...lasted longer then my Vaio buy several years. That should give you an idea. But then again, I'm not sure how great the newer Toshibas are.

In terms of buying blindly, I'd certainly go for the Dell over all other brands. I've been using them almost exclusively since 1996 without a problem to speak of. I've had an occasional call into their CS and though it costs money for the service, the success rate is 100%.

I have 2 notebook computers: My personal computer is a Gateway Solo 5300 (P-III), which is nice, but the CD and hard drives suck, and the memory is in dire need of an upgrade. My work computer, a Dell Latitude D610, is a sweet machine. The top feels like some kind of metal, to protect the screen, this thing has every option built in except a floppy drive (who uses them anyway?) and the battery lasts forever (thank you centrino). My boss has a Latitude 600, and its slid off the seat and against the dash too many times to count, but everything works on it, even with a busted hinge, and a power cable that is attached to nothing solid on the inside. I'd say, as far as toughness, the Dell's the way to go, although I don't know personally about the inspirons.

Dells are the shit if you are buying laptops, pre-built PCs, or servers. We use Dell equipment (especially servers) exclusively for our company.

What do I mean by 5 years? This thread originated in June of 2005. That's nearly 5 years ago, in my book.

No, but I have to ask you if you are retarded? You misspelled "years" as "yers".

eesh, thanks for your kind comments. Actually, yes, I do have some variations to my ID. However, would you like to know why? Because, I've never registered any of them - yet, someone else is going around behind me and registering the names before I get a chance to.

So far, the following have been taken:

- In The Know
- Inn The Know

I guess it's just a matter of time before Inn The Know 2 gets taken. However, at this point, I guess I don't care too much as it really isn't that exciting of an ID. I liked "In The Know" much better.

No, I think most of the people on this site (including you Tom!) are intelligent and make coherent posts. It's just a couple of people here read like they keep a thesaurus besides their keyboard.

eesh, Are you implying that my posts sound as though I'm using a thesaurus? I actually write like this all the time - even at work. My communications are always professional. To a degree, though, it does drive my family crazy as it can be quite formal at times.

I guess I'm not so concerned who might be taking up the names. I'm just trying to capture a good one - then, I'll dump the "T2T" identifier.

I wasn't talking about you, unless you are the one posting as In the Know.

Yes, eesh, it was me who was using those IDs. I was trying some new ones out with the intent of registering a new ID to use.

Sheba,

Thanks for the trolling. However, instead of trolling, you should work on improving your intelligence. It will certainly get you further along in life.

You're making an assumption that I'm one of the "little people" - as in someone who is beneath you? Puhleaze!! Time to remove your head from your a$$.

Corrected for you "all mighty", sir! Is there anything else those of us beneath you may do for you this evening?

Maybe, you can come over and wash the feet of this good Muslim this evening after you've watched enough television and living off your Federal pension. What were you, a postal worker? Did you schlep mail from door-to-door in the Arlington neighborhoods for 25 years of your career?
