Sweden burns rabbits to heat homes
Posted by: WTF? ()
Date: October 18, 2009 11:59PM

The rabbit population in Sweden has gotten so out of hand, they are hunted down to ward off destroying the ecosystem.

What about all those bodies? They are shipped to an incinerator and used as fuel for heating houses.

They also proposed using the heat from cremating humans to heat homes and run electricity generators, but decided it was a bit too morbid.

I read something about this in the economist about 6 months ago, and actually, as long as they aren't rounding people up due to higher demand and less supply, why not?

As far as the rabbits, again, as long as they are simply culling the herd, so to speak, using sound wildlife management measurements, and not doing it to meet the demand for heat, why waste the heat?

From the article:

"That's amongst some people, particularly among some animal rights activists who think this is not a good way to treat rabbits."

They are cute, and we shouldn't kill them simply because they can be used as biomass to heat homes, but when they NEED to be killed because they are overbreeding their environment, we should either eat them or use their bodies for heat.

The most disrespectful thing you can do to a life form is to kill it and then waste its life by simply discarding it.

Using its body in some way to keep the food chain going is respectful.

There are no ugly bunnies.

They are all cute.

I hit a bunny on Old Dominion a few weeks ago, and even though I never saw it, other than the little blur a few feet in front of my car a half second before I hit him, I'm sure it was a cute little bunny, and I really feel bad that I hit him.

I found an ugly bunny, and even that dude still looks way too cuddly to want to kill.

Why not?

I took this picture myself. The little dude was eating my garden.

I thought he was cute enough that I actually put up a fence around my garden and then picked a few herbs and vegetables and left them out, away from my garden, so he and his family could eat without destroying my garden.

Bunnies are basically really cute rats. Besides their appearance, they are basically vermin.

Seems like it would be more expensive to burn a rabbit. The fur might burn but not much else.

adopt, or eat?

I'm just as happy to keep the little guy and his hundreds of family members out of my garden, and throw them some scraps every once in a while.

Your kitties could help me with the asshole squirrels who constantly get into my garden and eat just about everything. If your kitties massacred the entire lot of squirrels, I'd happily buy them each a pound of catnip.

Fuck the squirrels.

I think I need to buy a natural predator to the squirrel, and spend the time training him.

He might even make a good house pet. My doggies would like a new friend.

So many people are going hungry while people are having their bodies embalmed or cremated.

Why couldn't we put the dead to work? They COULD be food and heat.

Though, I guess it could open the door to farming humans or even something scary.

We already feed dead cows to cows, and dead pigs to pigs, and dead chickens to chickens.

We aren't that far away.

I'm okay with using the heat from existing cremations for energy, just so long as it doesn't become a commoditized practice but simply a "while we are already doing it, might as well get every ounce of benefit out of it" sort of thing.

As far as using dead people for food, that should be a no-go right from the start and never looked at ever again. There's just way too much wrong with that.
