Methane Hydrate is a huge and untapped energy source.

It's about time we figured out how to release it, now if only someone would collect the shit and let me heat my home and grill my burgers with it.

I read a book many years ago.. can't remember the name right now but it was about companies doing oil and gas mining off the continental shelf into these beds since they had huge deposits of methane held in the methane hydrate. The books premise was that as they mined the areas, they inadvertently disturbed the balance (I think some parasitic worms there had something to do with it - it was science fiction) and suddenly released tremendous amounts of methane that resulted in a catastrophic global warming event. Oh yeah, and the continental shelf collapsed off Norway since the methane hydrate was acting as a big ice block under the land shelf there. It was an interesting book *shrug*

Quote

...
"Methane hydrate" is an ice-like substance composed of water and methane which is stable under conditions of high pressure and low temperature.

As temperatures rise, the hydrate breaks down. So this new evidence shows that methane is stable at water depths greater than 400m off Spitsbergen.

However data collected over 30 years shows it was then stable at water depths as shallow as 360m.
...

Maybe this will finally explain a question I have had about Al Gore's charts. What is it that made the charts drop in the amount of CO2 suddenly? It was a sawtooth chart showing CO2 vs temperature, and in all the previous readings it showed a sheer drop in CO2 and temperature at a certain point - even when no humans were around. Maybe the release of methane will finally trigger the Ice Age event they also have predicted as part of the cycle (from the 1970's artciels on global cooling).

Guess we will see.

earth's C02 levels are relatively low compared to other planets in our solar system. plants are a huge factor in this. lets say earth has the same amount oh CO2 as jupiter for example, our trees and plants would be 8 times the size they are now. the charts dont show how plant life increased when CO2 levels increase. maybe that is the answer

Edit: to remove stupid statement with something a little more logical

It's not shit gas.

But if you cook with propane, supposedly that is decomposed dinosaurs, according to the "biotic oil" theory we are all supposed to believe.

I still think a massive world reforestation project would be cheaper and do more to combat global warming then anything else I have heard yet. And again, if it gets too cold, we can always burn the wood later :)

i happen to agree. people take for granted the air we breath. they think it will always be there no matter what they do. if the government invested a fraction of its money to replenish the forests it would make a huge difference. look at how much money they spent on the "bail out" plan. put that shit to better use. there wont be any banks if there is no oxygen.

On a positive note - perhaps some entrepreneur should go out and position his ship over the escaping methane and collect it. No drilling required, just capture, process and ship to the market....

There's a bottled water, I forget the name, that is basically glacier water that they collect in the pacific ocean. Supposedly it is concentrated like a bubble within the ocean water, and they have a ship that can drop a hose to the proper depth to retrieve pure drinking water.

I'm sure the same technology can be modified slightly to collect water saturated with the released methane, and then concentrate it and dump the remaining sea water, then pressurize it and deliver it to market using the same methods they ship natural gas already.

Of course, the claims of pure drinking water from 3,000 feet below the surface could all just be a money making ploy from a bunch of scam artists selling $5 bottles of water. http://www.hawaiideepseawater.com/

Ah, here it is, The Swarm

http://www.inklingmagazine.com/articles/der-schwarm-geoscience-has-never-read-so-good/

Quote

...
The major global disaster, however, centers on my own research field, gas hydrates. These icelike solids form when methane – from organic matter decaying on the cold, pressurized sea floor – combines with water. Though it sounds like a convoluted process, deposits are abundant all along the world’s continental margins. In fact, they are so common that they may contain twice as much organic carbon as all other sources (oil, gas, coal) combined. If they could be harvested safely, they would be an immense, untapped and cleaner fuel resource.

But extraction is not yet simple or safe. Should the deposits become destabilized, vast quantities of methane – a greenhouse gas – could be released into the atmosphere and speed up the already terrifying pace of climate change. There is also geological and paleoceanographic evidence of huge underwater landslides in the past that triggered tsunamis and possibly were associated with hydrate destabilization. Some researchers have argued that this might have occurred at the “Storegga Slide” off Norway. It’s a theoretically devastating situation, which Schätzing refers to as the “hydrate researcher’s standard litany of doom.”

The hydrate deposit at the chaotic center of The Swarm is indeed located off the Norwegian coast. It also comes complete with its own population of methane ice worms. Methane ice worms are small centipede-like creatures discovered 10 years ago in the Gulf of Mexico – still their only known habitat. In Schätzing’s story, the worms not only show up across the Atlantic, they are also mutated, angry and primed for mass destruction.

"a greenhouse gas – could be released into the atmosphere and speed up the already terrifying pace of climate change. "

Wow, the Global Warming Religion is already evolving into a doomsday cult!

"already terrifying pace of climate change" -- That's for sure. This summer, with half the number of above 90 degree days as is the average, has me just completely and totally terrified. There are days where I can't get beyond my fears and just spend the entire day in bed hiding from the realities of global warming.

When I read the book, I remember liking it - right up until the end. Then it devolved into the whole global warming catastrophic end. I also remember talking with my wife about it and commenting on the stupid ending. Evidently it was a huge seller in Germany.

And that article was back in 2007 - the book was released in 2006.

So what is new? Submerged Methane Pockets have been known about for a VERY long time now. They do in fact release periodically, and in the past there have in fact been extremely large Methane Pocket explosions. As a matter of fact, a recent event in Alaska does point somewhat towards such an explosion as the culprit.

Farts are awesome. Lighting farts is not so awesome.

The best places to leave a fart is in elevators, in the middle of a set of double doors, in a taxicab, or any place where people unknowingly encounter the stink but are held captive for a period of time or where it can linger long enough for all to enjoy.

All's I'm saying is that it's shameful to destroy the stink by lighting it on fire when it can be enjoyed by others. Share it, don't flare it.

i think what is new is the amount of which it is escaping. yes it has been around for a long time, butt since the earth's temperature is rising it is causing it to leak more. creating even warmer conditions. so global warming is causing global warming. not us humans

I'm almost ashamed that I forgot the best place to share it.

Dutch Ovens!

Of course, through extensive experience, I have learned that you have to wait until the 4th or 5th time you're having sex before doing the dutch oven. Do it too soon, and your new girlfriend is going to get all mad and run out of the house screaming about how you're sick and perverted. Do it too late and she's going to feel like she's failing to change you to make you the man she always dreamed about.

You have to do it at the right moment, when she's still all in that giddy schoolgirl phase, after she's become comfortable around you and before she's starting to plan how she's going to shape you into her prince charming.

Watching that video makes me think about the TV commercials in the early 80's for a black clothing store chain that had locations all over the DC area. (well, Northeast, Southeast, and PG county)

They used to advertise stuff like "Ladies shirts for only 3.99! Men's suits for only 19.99! children's shirts for 2.99!"

I think it was "Mortons!" "all six Mortons!" if I remember right.

Why can't I find a video clip of those commercials?

Funny how you chose to use "butt" instead of "but" lol.

If it is causing any warming right now, then someone needs to remind the instruments to catch up (No warming detected for the past 8 years). I have no doubt however that in the past it has either lead to, or been the result of climate variances. It would be interesting to discover whether it is the former, or the latter.

More handouts for the needy.

Africa wants $67 bln a year in global warming funds
http://www.reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSLO544093

Quote

ADDIS ABABA, Aug 24 (Reuters) - African leaders will ask rich nations for $67 billion per year to mitigate the impact of global warming on the world's poorest continent, according to a draft resolution seen by Reuters on Monday.

Ten leaders are holding talks at African Union (AU) headquarters in the Ethiopian capital to try to agree a common stance ahead of a U.N. summit on climate change in Copenhagen in December.

Experts say Africa contributes little to the pollution blamed for warming, but is likely to be hit hardest by the droughts, floods, heatwaves and rising sea levels forecast if climate change is not checked.

The draft resolution, which must still be approved by the 10 leaders, called for rich countries to pay $67 billion annually to counter the impact of global warming in Africa.

...

Earlier this year, Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi called on rich countries to compensate Africa for warming, arguing that pollution in the northern hemisphere may have caused his country's ruinous famines in the 1980s. [ID:nLP93207]

A study commissioned by the Geneva-based Global Humanitarian Forum that was released in May said poor nations bear more than nine-tenths of the human and economic burden of climate change.

The 50 poorest countries, however, contribute less than 1 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions that scientists say are threatening the planet, the report said.

Africa is the region most at risk from warming and is home to 15 of the 20 most vulnerable countries, it said. Other areas also facing the highest level of threat include South Asia and small island developing states. [ID:nLS1002309]

Developing nations accuse the rich of failing to take the lead in setting deep cuts in greenhouse gas emissions, and say they are trying to get the poor to shoulder more of the burden of emission curbs without providing aid and technology.
