You would be wrong. Catching the ball in the field of play and backing into your own end zone from your own momentum warrants a touchback and would not be considered a safety under any circumstance. One can also down the ball for a touchback.

It happened I think two monday nights ago. Player was forced by backing up for a punt into his own end zone after the catch. You could see him think for a second and then hesitantly down the ball and the referee ruled touchback.

Lets move on to something more complex. What warrants a catch?
